Good for lunch

I work at VGH and there are a lot of food choices when it comes to taking my lunch break. Japas Bistro is relatively new to all the food offerings in the area, but it has very quickly become a staple for my lunch breaks. The rice burgers they offer at lunch are amazing! The portions are an excellent price for my money, it includes the rice burger, fries, salad, and miso soup. They have expanded the choices since they've opened, my favourite so far is the salmon sashimi, there are good sized portions of fish as the filling. The service is great; unlike a lot of Asian restaurants in Vancouver, the servers actually come back to your table to make sure you have everything you need. Good food and good service for a decent price, what more can you ask for?

Good Place to Chill

This is definitely a great neighbourhood watering hole. The music is great on most nights and the bartender never lets anyone's drinks go empty without assuring that they don't need another one. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed and there is always a friendly face to chat for a few minutes when you're waiting for people. Even when you're alone, you're not alone... which is what makes it a great place to sit and just enjoy life. It's more of a pub than it is a cafe, but I'm not complaining!

I thought I'd check this place out after getting a paper menu delievered to our door. For a place that serves a mix of Indian and Greek food, the decor was ironically bland and white washed. The decorations were cheap motel art on pale pink walls which made me feel more like I was in my breakroom at work than trying out cuisine that is not part of my own culture.

It's a small point of contention though, because what really matters is the food. Food quality was pretty good for the price. The lunch specials are definitely worth the price; I got the butter chicken combo and the naan that came with it was fluffy and chewy, just how I like it.

The service definitely needs work. When I went in, it was a Sunday morning so it was just the owner with two cooks in the kitchen. Either he needs to learn how to multitask or he needs to hire an extra person to look over the customers. When I walked in, there was one table with a large group (around 10 people) and another table with a couple finishing up. He pointed to a general area and told me to take a seat (did not actually lead me to my table) and I didn't get a menu until a good five minutes after I sat down and he'd finished running around for the large group. That's understandable, as they were there first and a big group that had people wanting different things.

However, I noticed that when they got all the things they wanted and the owner finally got a chance to breathe, he would linger by the kitchen window and I had to stare at him for another good five minutes before he came over to take my order. It was like he forgot I even existed. He went to get my food as soon as it was ready, but instead of taking it directly to me, he paused at the big table and showed them the lunch special I had ordered. I found this to be very very unprofessional as the food was prepared for me to be eaten, not to be paraded around and displayed as a sample. It would be one thing for the people to take a peek and then ask him what it was but another for him to bring it up to them and say "This is what our lunch special looks like." As someone who was very hungry already, I did not appreciate his lack of forethought to his customers' needs nor the time he took to discuss my meal with other patrons rather than actually bring me my food.

All in all, the food was pretty good for its price but I wouldn't go in again because of the service. The owner seems pretty smart and knows how to run the logistics of things but not actually how to serve customers and give each table the attention required. I might try their delivery service in the future but won't be wasting my time with their subpar service.
