A great evening was had!!

Couldn't agree more with the other reviewer.
Enjoyed a wonderful night at the Bistro last friday. So happy to have such a great room so close to my home to enjoy great food and amazing performers. Hat's off to restaurant for bringing in very high quality musicians to compliment this establishment. Friday was Neil Harnett with special guest, and very local boy, Steve Gidora on mandolin. They were amazing, especially playing Neil's original material. I get out and see a lot of live music and mostly have to travel downtown. To be able to enjoy such a high caliber of music so close to home (staggering distance) is one thing but to do so enjoying fine French Cuisine with lots of local micro beer on tap puts it over the top. Overall value isn't just the food, local beer and wine which is really great but to combine this with the entertainment takes it a step up for the Newton area and Surrey in general. We shared and enjoyed a seared Ahi tuna salad, Tourtiere pie Quebec style and tempura prawns.

Good Thai Experience in Surrey
Submitted Sunday, May 22, 2011 - 7:37am [Dine in]

Have been to this Thai restaurant 3 or 4 times over a few years and had a meal last night that compels me to write the review. To start with there are so few decent chinese/thai/malaysian asian restaurants in Surrey it is a treat to find one that is good. Ordered 3 dishes I hadn't had here in the past based on advice from other reviews. Started with a bowl of Tom Yam Gai soup that was delicious and was a huge amount for 2 people. Great broth and a bit of a kick. Ordered Pad Thai and the and Pa Naeng curry with prawns. The curry was advertised as an extra spicy curry dish and it certainly is. The prawns were large and fresh. Could have easily got away with the soup and 1 entre dish for $20 for two and would have been stuffed but wanted to order an extra dish to take home for lunch the next day. Portions overall were very good.
The Pad Thai was a pleasant surprise and as good as I have had at any Thai restaurant in the lower mainland.
The service has always been consistent and friendly and knowledgeable in explaining the dishes on the menu. The interior is very well done.

Still impressed and Vancouver Sun article recognition confirms this is a great place to eat!
Submitted Thursday, December 30, 2010 - 1:41pm [Dine in]

I have returned a good number of times since my original review and have to say the food is still consistently great. I live in the Newton area and considering there are so many restaurants, and all seem poor, I really appreciate Tawara is doing well and will most likely be around for some time providing great Japanese food.
Service has improved a great deal and the past problems were due to inexperience of what appeared to be staff working in their first job in a restaurant. They now have the experience and I find they are very personable when serving their customers. I really like the way they bring you a sample from the kitchen of a dish that you would probably never try. Great and well deserved review in Dec.30/2010 Vancouver Sun. Hats off to owner Bum Yeon Pyo! Keep up the great work.

Deserves a plug!

I went looking for this restaurant after reading the other two reviews.
Went for the Friday night special on way home from work. The outside sandwich board indicated it was steak special night for $10.

This came with a bowl of butternut squash soup. 2 garlic bread/buns.
A steak that was at least 10 oz though it was advertised at 8. I chose bake potato and it came with steamed veges. I was stuffed and couldn't finish the dinner. I was trying to figure out how much profit they were making off this dinner. It was incredible value for $10. Steak and overall food was great.

The interior was cozy and as mentioned very western.

Where does one find a $10 steak dinner in the lowermainland.

Excellant Dim Sum
Submitted Wednesday, February 4, 2009 - 11:25pm [Dine in]

I have had a few lunches and dinners here and the food has always been consistant and great. Have now gone twice for Dim Sum and its as good as anything I have had anywhere in the lowermainland. Their shrimp dumplings are huge and absolutely delicious. Very nice interior and friendly owner and staff. Yes its a bit pricey but with the high quality level you feel like you got great value when paying the bill.

Its great to see the place busy because you know they aren't going to be going out of the business and we will have a great and rare source of chinese cuisine outside of Richmond and Vancouver.

First Visit gets a thumbs up!!
Submitted Wednesday, February 4, 2009 - 11:15pm [Dine in]

Thankfully the Sam Wa finally closed. I happened to drive by and noticed the Grand Opening sign on the outside and turned around and gave it a try.

At a new Chinese restaurant that I have never tried before the first dish I always try is the "House Special Chow Mein" as a measuring stick. I was impressed. Very large portion, seafood was very fresh. Big scallops, prawns, cuttlefish and cod. Not overwhelming with too many vegetables. Just the right mix.

Very friendly owner and staff. He said that he has a chef from one of the Richmond restaurants which is where the owner came from.

Based on the first visit I was very impressed. The price was high at $12.95 but the size would have stuffed two adults on its own and I took lots home.

They have a lunch menu with smaller portions listed at $7.95 per dish. Combination of lots of the typical western examples along with a few specialized dishes.

Looking forward to going back to try something else and will be optimistic my first visit wasn't just a one hit wonder.

We desperately need some good chinese restaurants in the Surrey area. I'm sick of driving into New West to Hon's.
