Pho 99 Vietnamese Noodle House403 North Road, #302, Coquitlam
Won't be back
Submitted Tuesday, July 28, 2009 - 3:15pm [Dine in]

I've been to Pho 99 several times. The pho is always decent although there wasn't any basil the last couple trips. Not a big deal. My problem is with the service. One waiter in particular really needs an attitude adjustment. We came in and wanted to sit away from the windows because of the heat. The server said "No!" and demanded we sit at a particular table. Two other groups after us were given the exact same treatment followed by eye-rolling and Vietnamese muttering. If this were a single occurence it wouldn't be an issue. The fact is, this "server's" attitude is the complete opposite of what any professional server should be. Guests feel uninvited, uncomfortable and demeaned. Not exactly the recipe for building a clientele.

Great spicy Szechuan

We had plans to visit Chiu Yuet Restaurant after reading the positive reviews. As we pulled up...to our surprise....we saw this brand new restaurant in its place. Two of my favorite things...Garlic & Chili!

We ordered from the lunch special menu. The complementary Hot & Sour soup was really good. Solid heat and a touch of sweetness. Next we had the Szechuan Chicken and Ginger Beef. The chicken was cooked perfectly with dried chilies, onion, bamboo and celery. The beef was alright. Too sweet and a little overdone. We finished with the Szechuan Beef Noodle Soup. This was the highlight of the meal. Perfectly braised beef brisket flavored through and through. An amazing broth and al dente noodles. All that for $20!! Cannot wait to go back!!

After reading previous reviews I was, to say the least, skeptical. I'm an Asian food addict and am very picky (to a fault) about my dining choices. From our first visit six weeks ago we have been back four times. Each time the food was above average and the service was top notch. All of the lunch menu items are below five dollars and the variety is impressive. The Flat Noodle with Beef was excellent (make sure to ask for Sirracha sauce on the side!). Incredible deep-fried taro dumplings, deep-fried squid with chile and garlic were killer, spicy green beans can't be missed, shui mai dumplings (pork, prawn & mushroom) were arguably the best item we tried. All around great value and very addictive! Clean washrooms to boot!! Get there before noon or you'll be waiting at the door.

You will be addicted.

Over the years I have come to love all the varieties of Asian soup. From Vietnamese Beef Stew to Tom Yum....Laksa to Mulligatawny. I battle the demons of my Pho addiction almost daily (and I usually cave pretty quick). As if all those weren't enough, along comes Lao Shan Dong and their incredible Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. Tender pieces of flank in an absolutely mouth-watering broth served with delicious, chewy handmade noodles. To me, it's the perfect bowl.
