A nice family place for brekkie - portions are okay and so is the taste. Good for fun occasions if you've never been before. I remember one of the older locations that used to be on Main & Terminal. It was a weekend treat for my Aunt & Uncle to take us for a yummy breakfast. That place always brings back fond memories. It's nice to have one close to home now. =) Much better than IHOP.

Cupcakes on Thurlow797 Thurlow St, Vancouver
Cupcakes is only Cute
Submitted Tuesday, October 19, 2010 - 3:37pm [Dine in]

Finally after years of years of seeing the store(s) in Vancouver, I finally tried the Diva cupcake. I remember seeing Cupcakes as a teenager and thought, "Wow this is really cute" As an adult, I still felt the same, but was never really motivated to actually buy one and eat it. Not sure why. I must have felt really poor when I was younger. =) I was out with a friend this past summer and we just decided to have some cupcakes for dessert on a gorgeous sunny evening. I love the color, the feel, the packaging & the look of the cupcake, and even the really cute ambiance of the store. The service is great too. But wow, the cupcake is uber SWEET. And it wasn't moist inside as I expected. I was slightly disappointed. Perhaps my taste buds were changed by my first taste of cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery in NY last summer, but I loved that cupcake. So sad that I didn't feel the same about our local Cupcakes here. I do, however, love watching their show. I think Lori & Heather are awesome. Kudos to them for keeping their brand strong in Vancouver. =)

Musical Chairs?
Submitted Tuesday, October 19, 2010 - 3:17pm [Dine in]

So I love most Thai/Singaporean/Malaysian/Indonesian food & it's great that we have such great places to have this type of cuisine in Vancouver. I just wish Tropika would be a bit more consistent. It's as if their chefs & waiters play musicial chairs on their customers. I went to both the Cambie & Robson locations in a span of a few weeks and I'd have to say I enjoyed the Cambie location way more. The food tasted better, the mediocre service was slightly better, and they had the seasonal mango sticky rice dessert I wanted! At the Robson location, they made up some lame excuse that it wasn't in season and that something was wrong with the mangos. This was in the middle of July, so that was kind of weird. Plus the Robson location was awful. Snotty waiters and the food was bleh. Soggy veggies and terrible flavors. I was quite surprised because I had gone on other occasions and really enjoyed it there. However, the Cambie location fared better. The portions are not as good as they used to be, but Cambie totally delivered on taste. Glad that one of the locations was decent. Just hope I go to the right location next time! =)

Khai Thai To Go2184 Cornwall Ave, Vancouver
Great To Go & Eat In
Submitted Tuesday, October 19, 2010 - 3:02pm [Take-out]

Small little place across from Kits beach - delicious flavours and dishes. Good portions. I often go here if I don't feel like cooking. The service has always been friendly and relatively fast. Except if you order the seasonal Mango sticky rice dessert - that takes a bit to prepare. It's quick, yummy, & inexpensive. Overall, not bad.

Great little place in gastown. Love the ambiance. Good for drinks and small plates.
Yummy pot pie with Stout - wish there was more. Hubby enjoyed his beer and duck confit.
We were happy, but not super full. Definitely want more...wish the portions were slightly larger.
I'll give it an A for effort. Delicious food though.

Mmm Yummy!!
Submitted Wednesday, December 2, 2009 - 1:48pm [Dine in]

I went to Maenam on a busy Friday night with a few friends and had a fantastic time!! The service was choppy and slow, but warm & friendly. The restaurant gives off a casual vibe; a good cozy ambiance. I'd recommend making reservations, cuz this place was super packed the night that we went. The food was really delicious and unique - it's definitely not your typical Thai Restaurant. Very flavorful dishes, but presentation was poor. While I thought the metal round bowls the curries came in were cool, it could have looked way better. I thought each entree was reasonably priced and we went home full. Of course for 4 people we ordered much more than we would if it was just myself & my husband. The only thing that was a bit overpriced was the Jasmine Rice. Otherwise it was a good value for what we got. The Thai Sausage was salty on its own, but topping it with the housemade sweet chili sauce made it fantastic. The green papaya salad was kind of boring, didn't really taste spicy nor spectacular. The green curry halibut was insanely spicy but good. Definitely a nice kicker. My favorites were the Aromatic duck curry - the flavours of the meat were accentuated by the cucumber relish, the yummy pork cheeks w/ longan and the Panaeng Beef - very meaty and tasty. For dessert, we tried both the Dark Chocolate pot de creme and housemade rice donuts. Mmm, soo good! Overall, a very enjoyable first visit to Maenam! =)

A true neighborhood gem!! We've been to Wilbur & Sabastian's three times now in the past month and it never disappoints! We've tried the delicious braised lamb shank (a must order!), the Calabrata Stew, the chipotle chicken breast, the lasagna and a few delicious desserts! All excellent and warms up the soul! And you must try the four layered chocolate cake - heaven!!! We've also had the raspberry key lime pie and the mocha cream pie - all very yummy & filling. My favorite are their homemade soups and bread! Wonderful homemade food that won't break the bank. =)

Finally Hotpot in Coquitlam
Submitted Friday, November 20, 2009 - 12:43pm [Dine in]

Was very excited to try this place because we didn't have to trek all the way to Richmond! Everything is fresh and the meat is nice & thinly sliced so it cooks faster. Soups base and sauces are great too. The only gripe is that I felt like I was at Hotpot speed eating 101. While stuff comes right away and it's all you can eat, the portions are tiny! You don't really get a lot if you only put 1 or 2 in the number of items you want to order. I'd recommend trying to put 5+ as each quantity you want. And in the 2 hour limit you have, you have to eat fast and order fast so that you get your money's worth! I didn't really enjoy it as much as I thought I would, but glad there's a hotpot alternative close to home.

Only sorta wonderful
Submitted Friday, November 20, 2009 - 12:27pm [Dine in]

Decent Shanghai cuisine - good portions, price and selection but nothing overly wow-ing. Came here twice with friends and the food comes fast but it's not that yummy. I think I prefer the other Shanghai places in Richmond more. Not sure what the big hype is with so many competing places, the actual food in Shanghai is way better and you can get so much more for your buck. =)

The Arni Kokkinisto - braised lamb is yummy! So is the BBQ Chicken. Great portions and taste! A good place to come for some good greek food, but only once in awhile because it's quite pricey. The place is quite large and service is okay. Tons of parking too. A good alternative if you've tried all of the other surrounding restaurants in the area. =)

We drive by this place almost every single day, so wanted to try it out. The food is only okay and the waitress took forever to bring us our tea and our meal. She also didn't know what was in the special rolls that were listed on the specials board. The Nabeyaki Udon was the smallest portion I've ever tried and the Sushi Combo was only mediocre - very small California Rolls. The Rainbow Roll was probably the only redeeming tasty sushi dish. I think they do a lot of take out orders, because the entire time we were there, there were at least half a dozen people coming in to order take out. It's definitely not the best sushi place in town, but not the worst.

Submitted Friday, November 20, 2009 - 11:55am [Dine in]

We came here on a rainy September afternoon for a late lunch and it was a great choice! A memorable meal that's for sure. I LOVED the Kentucky Burgoo - slow cooked meats w/ lima beans, corn, tomatoes, cabbage & okra served over garlic mashed potatoes. Sooo good and totally warmed us up!! The restaurant is not very large, but very cozy with pretty comfy booth like tables and couch-like seating. Service is friendly and attentive. Can't wait to go back to try more!

A great neighborhood gem on W 4th! Service is friendly but not overpretentious. It gets super busy and packed so be sure to go early. The food is delicious and so is the wine. And hot french bread? Soo good!! Portions are good, but kind of pricey for my liking. Not bad, pretty good to try on a random night you feel like french food.

Sango Japanese Fusion Restaurant110 Brew St., #5, Port Moody
Satisfied, but not memorable
Submitted Friday, November 20, 2009 - 11:43am [Dine in]

Tried Sango for the first time at a friend's birthday party a month ago. The menu selection was quite extensive and innovative. In terms of presentation and taste they did very well, but portions and price didn't quite match. I remember our group ordered A LOT but I didn't feel entirely satisfied with the meal. A great location right across from the Thrifty Foods in Port Moody on Ioco Road, so they will cater well to the growing population of the surrounding new area, but it's not a place I would go to on a regular basis unless it was a special occasion for a large group of friends.

Always a special place in our hearts
Submitted Friday, November 20, 2009 - 11:37am [Dine in]

We love coming to Hart House to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or special event! The food is always delicious, the ambiance romantic and service top-notch. We got married right outside Hart House by the lake 2 years ago and have been coming back every single anniversary to celebrate! We are always thrilled to try their menu and specials - everything is always presented nicely and tastes great! We loved working with them for our wedding and their venue coordinator, Sonja is fabulous!! She made our special day amazing and we had a wonderful magical time at Hart House! We will always love Hart House for everything it has to offer. Even though they've gone through a chef change in the past 2 years, they've still managed to maintain a quality and standard that makes the food at Hart House delicious and memorable. Also their wait staff are awesome, especially Ian, who we get every time we go there! Thanks Hart House for being so wonderful! =)

Warms up the Soul
Submitted Thursday, November 19, 2009 - 4:58pm [Dine in]

Manrisung is a great Korean restaurant to try hotpot dishes, noodles and the Peking duck. Every dish is delicious and a good value. Service is awesome too - friendly servers and the first time we went there the owner/chef personally greeted us. Don't be surprised to find some Chinese inspired dishes there and if the chef starts speaking to you in Mandarin and Korean, it's not your ears playing tricks on you - he's from an area in Korea very close to the Chinese border so a lot of his korean dishes have a lot of chinese flair to them. Wonderful place with wonderful food that warms you right up.

Balloon & A View on Birthdays
Submitted Thursday, November 19, 2009 - 4:49pm [Dine in]

A GREAT place to celebrate your birthday. You always get a birthday balloon and they do something fancy with your dessert cake. The food is decent but nothing super wowing. The Salmon Wellington is gigantic and very filling. And the view of the water makes The Cannery a very romantic setting. It's too bad that it might not be with us much longer. Hope they keep this Vancouver treasure!

Great Rice Bowls
Submitted Thursday, November 19, 2009 - 4:41pm [Dine in]

My favorite food court place @ Metrotown! I always get #2 - rice bowl with sorta spicy beef. The portion is great with sweet veggies, kim chee, bok choy and cucumbers. It's so delicious!! The price of this rice bowl has increased quite a lot in the past few years, but I don't mind it one bit. It's one of my comfort meals. =)

Been coming here on a regular basis for the past 2 years. It's close to work and it won't break the bank. I've almost tried everything on the menu! The soup broth is definitely the best I've had so far in the lower mainland! The vermicelli dishes are pretty delicious too. Service is attentive and fast! I've never seen this place empty before! It's not in the best location in town, but it is sure the best Pho we can find here! Right next to the Surrey Central skytrain station, you can smell the delicious Pho as soon as you get off the train! =)

Why is the Waitress Sweeping the floor??
Submitted Wednesday, August 19, 2009 - 2:12pm [Dine in]

I can't help it, I love food and I love to eat. After trying many different restaurants in the lower mainland, I notice everything from the first time I get seated to the waiter taking my order. We decided to come here after work because it was close to the movie we were going to go watch. Upon entering the cozy, funky and cool looking restaurant, I was warmly greeted & seated promptly. My first thoughts were, "Wow, this place seems pretty cool. " It had a nice open window to the outside and comfy dining tables, not too cramped but also not too spaced out. While I waited for my husband to arrive I noticed some things, such as the paper covering the top of the table, which I've seen before but didn't expect to see given that it seemed like such a swank restaurant. The waiter kept checking on me to make sure I was okay, which was great, but then some other waitress started sweeping the floor near the tables around me. I was a bit taken back because it was so unexpected given that I assumed dinner service had already started when I arrived at 6pm! Anyways, while strange to see that I was still excited to try the food. We opted for the pasta platter for 2, and while some of it was actually yummy, overall it was a disappointment because the portion was small for dinner and at $18/person I expected a lot more, not undercooked penne. =( I heard that lunch is better there with more reasonable prices. It guess that makes sense since it caters to a larger crowd during that time, but still. Wish it were better for dinner.
