Rude server puts off repeat visit
Submitted Tuesday, March 8, 2011 - 7:16pm [Take-out]

Just bought take out from this neighbourhood place. I hadn't been in quite some time. Previously found the food to be "so - so", but decided to give it another chance. Although the sushi is "passable", the young woman who took my order was so rude, I will never return. After the server rung in my order, I made a change causing her to void my order and ring it in again. Despite my apologies, she was clearly annoyed with this and barely looked up at me for the remainder of the transaction and again when she gave me the order. Who needs this kind of service with the plethora of other good sushi places in the vicinity.

Very tasty and authentic
Submitted Wednesday, June 4, 2008 - 11:48pm [Dine in]

Unassuming and nondescript on the outside, this fairly new hole in the wall is a pleasant surprise. The food is very good and authentic. We all enjoyed the sambal mackeral in particular. As well the prices are very reasonable as the four of us had 4 dishes for well under $30. We will definitely return.

Great food, great service
Submitted Sunday, May 4, 2008 - 11:36pm [Dine in]

Initially visited about 3 years ago. Enjoyed it but didn't think it was outstanding. Our more recent visit was quite different. Put simply, the food was fantastic. My tuna was done to perfection - seared on the outside but still rare on the inside. Service was impeccable - attentive but not intrusive.

Will definitely return to this little neighbourhood gem.

Creative and Good
Submitted Saturday, February 23, 2008 - 6:04pm [Dine in]

Have tried many of the Japanese tapas style restaurants in town and have found this restaurant to always be consistent, offering good quality small plates as well as creative sushi. While the prices may be a tad higher, I find that the portions are on average, larger than most tapas/Izakaya restaurants of similar caliber. If cheap is your goal, there are numerous places that offer decent (and sometimes not so decent) in fact, rather run-of-the-mill, sushi.

Black Tuna is where I come when I crave good quality and creative Japanese food. My one concern is that there is never a line up here. This makes for easy spontaneous dine-outs, but in the long run, may mean it won't be here for long.

too much salt, not enough service,
Submitted Friday, July 20, 2007 - 11:16pm [Dine in]

I was looking forward to dining here after all the glowing reviews I had heard about the restaurant. I was very disappointed with the food. I agree with an earlier poster who thought the food was too salty. The lamb shank was terribly disappointing. Because the portions are so large, we had originally planned on taking leftovers home. After tasting the dishes, we decided against doggy bagging any of it! (I never like to waste any food, but I could at this establishment)

Unfortunately, the service was also poor. I asked for a glass in order to share in the bottle of wine but it never came.

Next time, I won't bother venturing over the bridge for such mediocre fare.
