Congee Noodle King3313 Kingsway, Vancouver
Disrespectful waitress
Submitted Wednesday, January 12, 2011 - 6:42pm [Dine in]

I came there on late night (around 10 pm ish) with my cousin for dinner, I think they don't have enough waitresses or something, there was no approach on customers, specially that time there were only 2 of us. After we were waiting for like 15 minutes they came and handed us the menu, it took a while to call them to order as well. I'm also not a Mandarin-speaker so there was an issue with the communication, the thing that I will remember the most there was this waitress-I should have asked her name but I didn't-with a long hair, she always speaks Mandarin/Cantonese even though I talked in English w/her, because she didn't speak English, so there was a misunderstanding with the food I ordered (double-ordering), and she was very upset and yelled in ENGLISH, that was pretty horrendous, so from now on I assume the waitresses there don't speak English unless they're mad or yelling to customers.

In term of foods, the taste was good, and price was reasonably cheap. It is just the service and the lack of manner from the waitress(es) that make me will really consider to go there again, maybe not... or maybe once/twice a year. I'd rather go to the one located by Broadway and Main St, they have better food and "slightly" better service.

When Calypso burger turned into a hell of nightmare
Submitted Sunday, August 29, 2010 - 6:16pm [Dine in]

I had dinner with 3 friends there on Friday, August 27. I ordered Calypso burger, my other friends ordered yam fries, nach 'r average nachos, stir fry bowls. Then I realized that I made a big mistake to step there for dinner, the burger I ordered, I think the chicken has been sitting there for days, it was as hard as a rock, even cheap McDonald chicken burger is 10 times better than that, the stir fry bowls' looked more like yucky canned food that they just pour it out and heat it up by microwave, tasted terrible, yam fries and nach 'r average nachos were alright, but please, don't go there for dinner or you will really regret it yourself, I'd rather sit inside Wendys and have their burger. Price was very expensive for the quality they serve, for "rocky" chicken meat burger cost me 9 bucks, stir fry bowls 8 bucks without any meat, yam fries was $6.50 and portion was kind of small, nach 'r average nachos was almost $12 including chicken meat, meh~! :(

Not to mention the atmosphere was dark and incredibly NOISY (we went there on Friday), the walk path was narrow and it was too dark so someone stepped on my feet, you have to walk almost outside to go to the washroom next door in the hotel, the place was also very uncomfortable, service was alright, they usually walk too fast to listen to your inquiry, and most of the time they will ignore you, the restaurant was busy, so I still could tolerate that, but not the food.

I will never ever go there again, what a nightmare restaurant for me on Friday night :(

Yummy crepe with improved service
Submitted Sunday, July 18, 2010 - 11:49pm [Dine in]

First time I bought the crepe there, it seemed like the staffs had no idea of what they did... I waited for over 20 minutes just for a crepe, I saw they kept breaking the crepes' skins and repeatedly made for 3-4 times just to make 1 crepe for 1 customer, that's why it took forever to get your crepes and I saw some customer were really upset about it.

Second time I ordered my favorite, Vanilla ice cream chocolate banana almond, the staffs seemed to get better, they didn't make that many mistakes compared to my first visit, and it didn't take that long to get my crepe, so I am happy about it. I've been buying my favorite crepe from them, always the same flavor, 2-3 times.... and will come back for more, the flavor is delicious (I don't know about the non-sweet crepes though), the crepes are pricey, however, it's slightly bigger than some other places that I have tried, their soft ice cream is awesome!! I love it and keep craving for more!!

I would love to see them opening another branch around Burnaby (perhaps in Metrotown?) then I will get their crepes more often since it'll be closer. Good crepes' experience for myself as a crepe's lover :)
Definitely will recommend this, and my other favorite crepe place in Robson St downtown "Bon Crepe"

High-end ramen in West End area
Submitted Sunday, July 18, 2010 - 10:11pm [Dine in]

First time I tried this ramen place today, got the kara ramen. Overall the service and environment was good (fair, I may say), the food was not bad except it was more like infant portion (very small), and I just got couple slices of pork that most parts were just fat! The soup was nice and rich, however, a little bit too salty to me and too oily. The noodle texture was fine, no complaint about that. It's just the ramen are very very pricey...with the same price I could had gotten a lot more better food, I feel it's not worth the value, not sure if I will go there again.
