Looking forward to next time!

My husband and I were looking for a nice local restaurant for our anniversary. We were very pleased with our experience at the Firehall Bistro. The food - Wow. We started with the special appitizer for that evening the King Crab salad and a regular menu choice the Onion Tart. Both were delicious. I had the Ribeye steak and my husband had the braised Pork Belly for our entrees. Both were very tender and tasty with nice accompaniments and presentation. To finish we had the apple tart and the "Still Life" the latter being a work of art, it was almost too pretty to eat. The service was very good with the pleasent servers checking back frequently to make sure we were enjoying the meals etc.
It would be nice if the Bistro had a full liquor license instead of the beer and wine option, although the selection of wines was fine and reasonable.

I really wanted to like this restaurant but...

I know that Palliotti's has been in this location for many years and enjoys a loyal clientel and I really had hoped for a good experience at this restaurant. It was disappointing.

Ok, so it is an old building and old style Italian eatery, nothing wrong with that. There are lots of these around and if they get the food and service right it can be great and the service was fine. Took drink orders right away, checked back often etc. The problem quite plainly is with the food. My husband is Italian and this is not real Italian. Both my husband and I were very disappointed in the quality of the meals. They give you a large serving but if it is not tasty who wants that? I ordered spagetti and meatballs (basic); the pasta was not properly cooked and the meatballs hard and tasteless. The meat sauce even had a strange flavor - bacon?

Maybe this is a good place to take the teens to full them up but for a nice dinner out for two, no way. Sorry. Like I said, with limited choices in the Suburbs I really wanted to like this place. We won't be back anytime soon.
