Guu in Aberdeen4151 Hazelbridge Way, #2790, Richmond
Not the way it was before!!
Submitted Wednesday, December 9, 2009 - 3:32pm [Dine in]

I have always been sort of any izakaya fan and has visited guu in aberdeen numerous times for lunch and dinner. they never seem to disappoint me. But i visited recently and boy was i surprised, it seemed like the whole experience changed!! it wasnt like the way it was before!

Food: the food is still very good, HOWEVER, since they changed the menu around a month ago, they have taken a LOT of my favourites OFF. GONE! i made some special requests and they still fixed up a couple of items that wasn't on the menu, but there is still a lot of missing items. (too much to say what's missing, check out their new menu online). they are now concentrated on pushing sushi (which is not bad at all), but why would i want to get sushi in a izakaya place? sorta beats the point.

Service: Always exceptionally good, no complaints here.

Value: The items are priced very decently, they portion is just right. However, since their new menu revolves more around sushi, i ordered some and find them a bit pricey. good tsukiji sushi could potentially cost $8 per peice. yes, PRICEY!

Ambiance: same'ol, good japanese feel with all the screaming and cheering. very good atmosphere if you don't mind the noise!

overall, i probably wont visit the place much anymore, probably for lunch but definately not dinner anymore. the reasons being that i dislike the new menu, the sushi/sashimi is awesome, but it just isn't what i am looking for in guu. i prefer some other sushi joints. with the new menu, the whole experience just changed dramatically.

lets just say, i didn't know why, but last time i visited i left disappointed. it has nothing to do with the quality of food, always fresh and good. nor the value or service, both exceptionally great. deep down, i just feel that it is not the way it was before.

Food: i ordered the mixed mushrooms with pasta and it was awesome. the taste is there, the variety of mushroom was outstanding, the portion is very generous, i wish there were more toppings though >

Very Decent Alternative
Submitted Monday, November 23, 2009 - 6:16pm [Dine in]

Went there a couple weeks ago with the girlfriend, the sushi they serve is quite unique. at $8 per 3 pcs (rolled sushi) i wasn't sure if it is enough to fill me. well, it sort of did.
the rice they use is half white and half brown rice, so it is definately healthier alternative to the regular sushi.
the portion is okay, the ingredients inside is a little on the lacking side, but the taste is very flavourful.

i had the salmon and cream cheese, the shrimp with avacado, and the spicy tuna (if i remembered correctly), they were all very good. it is definately a very convient quick lunch, just pay and go.

definately recommend trying if you're in the area, try something different, you might like it

cheerz~

Food: for a izakaya, i did not expect the food to come cheap and in huge portions. in soul that is exactly what you get, expensive pricing, and very small portions. HOWEVER!! the food here is extremely good. the sashimi is very fresh and very good, i'd say one of the best places in richmond! the oyster special on monday and thursday is also very awesome for oyster lovers. not the best in town, but hey, 99cents/pc is very good value. overall, i've tried a few different dishes, they never fail to impress. only complaint i have is the size, it is noticably smaller than most places in richmond, but then the quality definately makes up for it

Service: i always go there very late, so usually not a lot of customers inside, so i get a LOT of attention, but services still has room to improve

Value: definately very very expensive. sure the food is good, the sashimi is AWESOME. but in terms of getting me and my buddies of 4satisfied with booze would probably cost $300+. wouldn't visit too often due to the price

ambiance: so-so, not as decent as most downtown counterparts, but it sure isnt bad for a chinese owner richmond restaurant

overall, food is awesome, but pricey, only go there if you're really determined to dish out a couple hundred.

Awesome Experience!!

I have been to Dot desserts for a couple of times and it has never failed to impress.

BUBBLE TEAS are very good and very well priced ($3.50). get it anywhere else say in richmond and it'll cost $4ish and probably doesn't taste as good

CREPES are made to tenderly and chewy perfection. I would prefer more ingredients inside the crepes, but considering the price $4-4.5 each, it is very very good.

the PARFAITS and deserts are spectacular. they use better ice cream for the parfaits similar to marios so they aren't cheap supermarket brands. the sponge cakes are very good tasting like something you'd get from a good bakery.

my recommendation is to try the tiramisu, i'd say best in the city, once you've tried it, you won't want to order anything else

the only complaint i have is that the store is a bit too small and the tables and chairs looked a little bit flimsy

overall a very good dessert place, highly recommend,
