Pho 99 Vietnamese Noodle House403 North Road, #302, Coquitlam
not bad, for a fast food pho place
Submitted Thursday, October 5, 2006 - 11:39pm [Dine in]

to be honest, pho restaurants are "fast food" places in general. where else can you sit and order a bowl of noodles and get it piping hot to your table in under 5 minutes?

pho 99 is a much better verson of pho hoa (the ultimate pho fast food). the prices are okay, the bowls are fairly big, but it is just mostly soup. not a lot of noodles or meat for that matter. the key is in the broth and this broth is quite nice..it's kinda got a weird spice (anise or nutmeg??). much more flavour than pho hoa and doesn't leave you as thirsty 30 minutes later due to msg overload.

also had the rice dishes with bbq pork chop...pretty good. don't eat the vietnamese sandwich...you'll be disappointed. had a very unusal "sweet" flavour to it.

i suspect pho 99 and pho hoa are related companies, as their menus look almost identical.

woudn't recommend this place

me and my buddy ate here about a year ago. i would consider ourselves "pho afficionados". the service was okay, if inattentive. we both had pho and i was very disappointed. the price was around $6.50 per bowl and there was neither a lot of noodles or meat. the broth tasted a bit like dishwater and other than that flavour, was quite non-descript period. i wouldn't eat at this place again..why would you, when bao chao is just up the street and would give you a bowl of pho 10 times better than this place.

Jagerhof Schnitzel House71 Lonsdale Ave, North Vancouver
comfort food at it's finest
Submitted Thursday, October 5, 2006 - 11:23pm [Dine in]

whenever i am in the lonsdale area, i always make a point of stopping by jagerhof for lunch. there are usually daily specials and the schnitzel cannot be beat. it's always lightly breaded and pan fried to perfection. sides that i have eaten included really crispy and tender potatoes fried in butter. i've had some meatball soup there that was also very good. service is friendly and attentive. there is just something warm and fuzzy about eating schnitzel and potatoes.

Donair Affair2540 Mary Hill Road, #105, Port Coquitlam
good donairs for the price
Submitted Thursday, October 5, 2006 - 11:19pm [Dine in]

i've been going to this location for about a year now. decent sized donair at reasonable prices, $4 for reg beef. much better than greek side cafe, which is up the street and around the corner. chicken donair is pretty good too, has flavour and the right amount of grease to it. ;-)

Andiamo Ristorante Italiano4124 Hastings St, Burnaby
truly one of the worst experiences
Submitted Thursday, October 5, 2006 - 11:05pm [Dine in]

i also had a similar experience at this restaurant a while ago, and from what the previous writer wrote, things haven't changed much since then. this restaurant offered and "all you can eat" pasta special for $10. when my wife and I went, the restaurant only had two other tables. there was maybe 8 people in the entire restaurant. unfortunately for us, there was only one person working (owner???). the cook and the server had called in sick, he was desperately trying to call someone to work, but couldn't. but rather than close the restaurant for the night, he decided that he could run the entire restaurant himself...big mistake. it took about 15 minutes for us to order. our caesar salad's came pretty quickly, but it took another 30 minutes for him to make pene pasta's with sausage. the pasta was okay, nothing special...but since i didn't want to wait another 30 minutes for mediocre pasta, in didn't push my luck with another 2nd order. finally after another table he had seated and ignored for 20 minutes had complained, the waiter/cook/cashier/busboy apologized and said that he was the only one working that night. you can chalk that up to the "not my f**** problem" file. that table ended up walking out, which we should have done one hour and two plates of pasta ago. needless to say, the tip was very small and we've never been back since.

i've been going for about 6 years now. their dinner specials for $11 can't be beat. i always have the roast lamb, which is tender and cuts with a fork. rice is also excellent. service is always attentive, but can be a bit harry when it is busy, usually fridays and saturdays...line ups can be long, but worth the wait.

Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits2991 Lougheed Highway, Coquitlam
not bad, but overpriced
Submitted Sunday, October 1, 2006 - 9:05pm [Dine in]

i've tried popeye's a few times, when it had come to coquitlam. there was much hoopla and i had read about how good it was. the chicken was spicy and crispy, but the pieces were small. also, as the years have gone by, the prices have soared. i haven't gone back in a while, but the last time i went there, i had a 3 piece meal for about $9??? it was a small drumstick, a small wing and a small thigh with a drink and a biscuit. for $9??? come on...go to lee's famous recipie in poco for much better chicken at better prices.
