Luckily, there were only a few folks lined up outside tonight when we went to kintaro. We went very hungry and ordered the gyozas and vegetable ramen (the regular version and the spicy garlic version).
The gyozas were served promptly and had thin skins that didn't fall apart. An order of gyozas only has 5 per order, which is just right for two hungry people.
The vegetable ramen is definitely filling and not thirst inducing salty like their regular BBQ pork ramen. They try to ram as much sprouts, asian cabbage, dried seaweed, etc. into the bowl. The ramen comes with a boiled egg, which isn't undercooked or salted. Normally, our ramen order would include extra noodle, but the large amount of veggies were more than adequate.
I had the spicy garlic version of the vegetable ramen and the potency of the garlic is just right. It tasted better with veggies than it does with the pork.
We dined on a Tuesday night and most tables were taken. This strained the wait staff and service took longer than desired. There was a surf and turf special that night and it is well worth the price. The duck entree is different - it is very rich and may be overwhelming to some palates. The dessert options are limited, however, the chocolate cubed is absolutely delightful.
Given the caliber of food and the location, the food is fairly priced. The surf and turf 3 course meal is an absolute steal, but the rest of the menu is as one would expect.
Hart house has classic decor with modern updates. It has a warm atmospheres for those chilly wet days of fall and winter.
If you don't want to wait a long time to yum cha on Sundays, HML Seafood Restaurant is a good option.
The lunch menu consists of some core dim sum choices (har gow, siu mai, etc.) and some esoteric ones (i.e. fried taro with curry chicken centers). Lunch items are average to above average and are fairly priced for the quality and quantity.
Servers were attentive and can speak and understand English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
There are some LCD TVs, but they did not display any programming during Sunday lunch hours. The decor is consistent with larger mid-price range chinese restaurants and still appears fairly new.
