Good food
Submitted Tuesday, June 24, 2008 - 8:13pm [Dine in]

I took a very picky eater here, and I also took a lover of Latin food. The picky eater didn't say much, which is a very good sign, and the lover of Mexican food said it was the best tamale he ever had outside of Mexico.

The portions are pretty small, and it's definitely more for sharing. I thought it was a bit pricey. One thing that for some reason bugged me is that the plates are from Ikea. I guess this bothers me because for the type of prices they charge, I think they should use something a little more upscale, and more for restaurant use. Or perhaps something that doesn't come from such a big-box retailer..

When I was last there, it took awhile for the host/server to notice us waiting to be seated despite the fact it wasn't busy, but other than that, the service was very good. Our waitress was very attentive, and I don't think our waterglasses were ever less than 3/4 full. Plus she seemed genuinely interested in what we thought of the food.

We were seated by the window which I thought was nice because sometimes servers can be lazy and seat you closer to the kitchen so they don't have to walk so far..

I will definitely be back, I think it's best to come on a weekday because it gets really full on the weekends.

Great place for a drink
Submitted Tuesday, June 24, 2008 - 8:01pm [Dine in]

I like coming here for a drink, but I am not too impressed with their food. Food is basic Breadgarden type fare. There are some definite hits and misses. Most of the staff are pretty good, but there are definitely a few that are less than mediocre, or just look completely bored no matter how busy it is. The last time I was there, they were trying to figure out who had one of the dishes that they just finished heating up, and one of the employee's said, "it was some old lady" which I think is pretty unprofessional.. There's probably a few better ways to describe someone other than "old lady"

There are usually several people behind the counter, but only a couple are actually doing anything, meanwhile most of their cutlery and glasses are waterstained or not quite clean, I think they could be using the standing around time to fix this.

They have a good selection of drinks, plus they are also licensed, so you can enjoy a glass of wine in their outdoor seating.

Althought I don't have much nice to say about the food or service, I still do enjoy coming here as it's a great place in downtown to sit with a friend and have a coffee especially on a sunny day.

I'm always craving their food!
Submitted Tuesday, June 24, 2008 - 7:51pm [Dine in]

This is one of my favorite restaurants. If I have someone visiting from out of town, I am sure to bring them here. I live in Vancouver and it's a bit far, but I will make my way out to New West just to eat here. Gas prices be damned!! I regularly crave their Nasi Goreng, anything with their sambal sauce and the Hunan chicken.

The ambiance is a modern trendy feel and the servers are very helpful. They also have a good wine list, and there is a very knowledgeable server on recommending wines for certain dishes.

Aside from the food, I like the fact that they never push any sales like most other restaurants these days.

Try to go on a weekday cause it gets busy on the weekends or make reservations.

I know it's not fair to comment on other reviews, but I have been noticing this on this site lately, but there is a reviewer on here that only submitted two reviews that totally disses this restaurant and his second review is for a similar restaurant but writes it a glowing review. I also often see someone only has one review and it is a totally glowing one, so it makes me think there is some other motive.. Sorry for ranting on a review but there is no kind of "forum" on here to rant.. I know it would be silly to expect moderators to control this, but it would be nice if there was some kind of "flag" button for reviews.

What's with the cheesy music?
Submitted Friday, April 18, 2008 - 7:13pm [Dine in]

I've been here about 6 times, and I must say the music is very distracting.. Richard Marx, Chicago, Dan Hill to name a few. The music reminds me of bad Karaoke choices.

The food is good, but I think on the spendy side compared to Daimasu which is what it used to be. They used to have a late night menu that was fantastic (CHEAP), but they got rid of it cause apparently not enough people were coming for that.

The service is usually quite good, there's one exceptional server that is ALWAYS smiling and very nice. There are a couple servers who can't tout customer service skills as their strong point.

On fireworks night you can pretty much see the fireworks. It never really gets that busy, and the food is pretty authentic. By that I mean it's made by Japanese chefs, at least the sushi and robata is.. The rolls are premade like most restaurants but if you sit at the bar, they'll probably roll you a fresh one..

If you have more than a couple to drink, make sure you are careful going down the stairs on to the street. Very steep..

Submitted Friday, April 18, 2008 - 7:04pm [Dine in]

I've only been here once, the food very good. My complaint is that I saw three very thin hairs/fibres in some of the dishes..

The music and ambiance is quite nice.

The service is attentive. I walked in wearing jeans, runners and sweatshirt and my friend was also wearing something similar. Everyone in there was dressed quite nicely, but we were treated very well, and no "once-over" from the person seating us.
The best part is that there is free parking! I found the prices a little high. I don't think I would go back there again, but I would probably still recommend it.

Kyung Bok Palace143 West 3rd St., North Vancouver
Best Korean restaurant in Vancouver area
Submitted Saturday, September 2, 2006 - 2:51am [Dine in]

I love Korean food, but have always been disappointed by the restaurants in BC. It's so much better in the US. Don't get me wrong, there are some good korean restaurants in Vancouver, but they usually are not consistent or the cleanliness leaves something to be desired or the service is pretty bad.
Kyung Bok is probably the best. It's clean, service is pretty good, and the food is good. They opened a second location in Lansdowne Mall, the service is not that great there, but the food is very good and it's clean.

Anna's Cake House606 East Broadway, Vancouver
Have enjoyed their cakes, but had a few disappointing experiences
Submitted Saturday, September 2, 2006 - 2:46am [Dine in]

I often get birthday cakes from Anna's and have usually enjoyed them, but the last time I was there I bought some buns and a few individual servings of cake. Not only were they not fresh, they didn't taste good. In fact, ended up chucking some of the buns as well as not finishing the cake. Felt pretty badly since I served it to guests. One of the buns I had contained a piece of thick plastic in it. Even the cakes and buns at T&T taste better as well as better priced.

I will probably continue to buy cakes from them as long as they are whole cakes since they sell out of the whole cakes everyday so the freshness is more guaranteed.

Nice place to go for drinks and appies
Submitted Saturday, September 2, 2006 - 2:34am [Dine in]

This is a fun place to go to for drinks and appetizers to share among friends. It's a stylish place especially on the bar side, it feels like a trendy bar in Manhattan. The food is good but not exceptional, but the presentation and atmosphere make up for that. There is maybe one or two waitstaff that I don't think is particularly attentive but there's definitely a few that shine. Will definitely keep going here.

Ajisai Sushi Bar2081 West 42nd Ave, Vancouver
Sushi: excellent. Waiting for a table: not good
Submitted Friday, September 1, 2006 - 2:32am [Dine in]

The sushi here is very good. The mackeral battera and tuna tataki are my favorites. I don't like the dynamite roll it doesn't use actual shrimp tempura as they don't have a license to have a deep-fryer. Instead they roll the shrimp in corn flakes. The menu is mostly sushi with very little "warm" foods. The place is very small, probably seats 20 people cozily. They have one large table but it's likely you may have to sit with strangers if you get seated there. The service is usually good, but not that consistent, but the food outweighs the inconsistencies. The prices are reasonable, but not cheap. The staff is all Japanese.

I don't really like the ambiance because while you're eating you feel a lot of eyes on you from the waiting customers wanting you to hurry up and get the heck out of there so they can have your table.

Takarabune Japanese Restaurant6459 Victoria Drive, Vancouver
Good food, good prices
Submitted Friday, September 1, 2006 - 2:19am [Dine in]

This place is always consistent. I've been here a number of times and it's a good place to go if you're looking for a place to just have dinner with family or a long time partner. The decor (especially the chairs) leave a lot to be desired. The prices are very reasonable, and the staff is all Japanese. It's very busy with mostly families which means there's kids so can be kind of noisy.
The servers are nice but they could probably use an extra waitress or a bus boy.
There's numerous bentos and combinations to choose from. And I pretty much like all their dishes. I don't like the grilled mackeral because it tastes like it was obviously frozen (rubbery) and the sushi can be slow. I'm not a big fan of california rolls and the ones here are no exception. Unfortunately, most of the combos seem to come with the obligatory three pieces of california roll.
The dressing they make for the salads is delicious.

The parking lot is kind of tight so I prefer parking in the Value Village parking lot next door.

Kitschy fun atmosphere
Submitted Friday, September 1, 2006 - 2:06am [Dine in]

I've only had breakfast here, but it's good if you're looking for a hearty breakfast, especially if you want some cholestrol and have a trucker's apppetite.

The tackiness of the decor adds to the appeal. I could easily see this restaurant in a movie or tv show. The service is good, staff is friendly, but the service is a bit slow.

I would not come here a lot only because I prefer more healthy choices, but it's somewhere to go for breakfast a few times a year.

Milestone's Grill and Bar5951 No. 3 Road, #200, Richmond
Second worst Milestones
Submitted Friday, September 1, 2006 - 1:58am [Dine in]

This is the second worst Milestone's I've been to. The food and service is much better at other locations (except for the airport location which is the worst). The last time I was here, the manager started a fight with a customer who was dining alone, and actually put his fists up and threatened him. Apparently the customer had one too many to drink but he wasn't obnoxious nor was he causing any trouble. There was only three tables of customers close by (our table being one of them) and the waiter actually had the nerve to say, "we won't be charging for the entertainment" when he brought us the bill like he was really proud someone from the staff would start a fight with someone dining alone. What was really disugsting and unprofessional was after the drunk guy left, the manager and some of the waitstaff were acting like a bunch of high school kids high-fiving each other.

The food was served moderately hot, and didn't come at the same time. The appetizers came after the main course and it didn't help that one of the tables close by us were actually the staff and they were getting the same appetizers before us.

Sushi Garden4635 Kingsway, Burnaby
Surprised at how popular this place is
Submitted Friday, September 1, 2006 - 1:41am [Dine in]

I've been to Sushi Garden multiple times but haven't been since the renovation. I only come here during lunch hour because it's close by, cheap, and adequate, but I do not think it is anywhere near exceptional. I would have to say it's a lot better than the other sushi restaurants in the very near area, but I would never come here for dinner when there's so many other choices.

The sushi may be fresh, but not consistent and the rice they use for the sushi is too salty. The cleanliness of the restaurant is questionable.

Marcello Pizzeria1404 Commercial, Vancouver
Good food
Submitted Friday, September 1, 2006 - 1:32am [Dine in]

Marcello's is one of my favourite Italian restaurants in this price range. The tagliatelle with the olives and tomatoes is delicious, and so is the lasagna. The tiramisu is a great way to end the meal. But the service can sometimes leave a bad taste in your mouth. If coming for dinner, expect to stand at the hostess area and not be acknowledged while multiple serving staff see you standing there. The tables are really close together and if there's only 2-3 of you, there's a chance you'll end up sitting in the hallway close to the bathroom. The staff are nice, but they are too busy to be attentive.

But despite the service I will keep going to Marcello's for the food. Like some other people have noted, the food can be inconsistent, but even the crappiest meal I've had here is a lot better than other restaurants.
