It was a date night for my lovely wife and i, dinner and a movie. We decided to check out the Port Moody Boathouse. We have been to the other Boathouses , English Bay, White Rock, New West and i can say that this particular location is the best of them all. Great location although parking can be a problem because they share the parking lot with the park and the rowing club next door. The ambiance is excellent, great view of the water and the service is very friendly.
We made a reservation through their website, which worked out nicely. We arrived about 20 minutes early so we sat at the bar and ordered some drinks and an appetizer. The drinks were good, Calamari was good, the dipping sauces were very good. You can tell it was made in house and not taken out of a bottle.
We were seated at the table and greeted by a very helpful server. However we were disappointed that they didn't have alot of the items listed on the menu like Ahi tuna, or the fish sampler.
I ordered the sirloin lobster combo and my lovely wife ordered the miso crusted halibut. The lobster was spectacular, my steak wasn't done the way i had ordered but they corrected that immediately. The green beans were very tastey, well seasoned. We found the halibut to be under seasoned and over cooked. It was kind of dry. The miso paste was pretty much non-existant. It was more like just a breaded halibut. The portion of fish was very good. Over all the fish was good, but it wasn't great. I always look for wow factor. The beans had some wow factor.
Usually when i go to the Boathouse i always leave hungry. I end up having to stop for fast food after dinner to satisfy the appetite. But on this occasion i was actually full. We weren't able to finish everything so we doggy bagged it.
Overall it was a good experience, i would definitly go back. Not very often because it is quite pricey. But i think i will have to check out Lobster Fest next week.
Cheers!
Voted #1 fish and chips? I guess Maple Ridge has very low standards for good fish "n chips, or else they don't have many Fish "n Chip establishments. Although it tasted good and the fish was cooked well, it was totally dripping with oil. I also found it very expensive. Lunch for 2 for $33 and no drink, that's overboard. I just moved to Maple Ridge from greater vancouver area, i think its going to be tough to find a good fish "n chips joint.
I've been to Dublin Castle a couple of times. It's pretty good generally. Great atmosphere with friendly service. The meals look good, well plated. I found the fish and chips to be too greasy, but still good. The Steak & Guinness pie left more to be desired. It was below par, the seasoning was way off, totally bland. I've never had it before so i don't know what it should taste like. But i know i won't order it again. I think some seasoning would have made the difference. The wings were 39 cents each, and they were pretty good, but they were really tiny. They looked more like pidgeon wings. The waitress didn't come around to ask us how the meal was. The burgers are awesome. They actually encourage you to make comments on this site, so i hope they improve themselves after reading this. I kinda like the place, i'd like to see it stick around. I would probably go more often if the prices were a little more friendly. Cheers :)
I bought a cake for my Dad's birthday here, Reverse Tuxedo cake. I was very disappointed. It was extremely dry and tasteless, there was no cream cheese, no mousse. It looked really nice, and i paid $30 for it. What a sham! This is the second time i've gotten baked goods from this place and both times i was disappointed. You kinda ruined the Birthday experience Bella, thanks. TNT Bakery! Now they got it together. So if you want a nice looking cake and don't really want to eat it, this is the place to get ripped off on cake.
I heard some people say this was the best bakery in New West. Hahaha. Not even close.
I go to this place for the vegetarian nature of the place. I order their samosas often. They are pretty good. The curries were good, but i find that i am always getting something different when i order something. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's awful. The sweets are overpriced. Baba sweets up the street offers vegetarian dishes aswell, they are much better tasting everytime.
That's sad, i really want to see this place do well. I like to support vegetarian only restaurants.
I've been eating fish and chips at Cockney kings for a long time, 10 or more years. No complaints about the food. It's awsome. If i am taking out, i usually call in my order so i don't have to wait. This has really annoyed me in my last few visits. When i go to pick up the food, shouldn't the order be already cooked? Instead i pay for the order and then they cook it. What's the point of me calling in my order? Why do they even take phone orders? I just end up waiting anyways.
The girl at the counter was totally clueless and had no customer service skills whatsoever. My order was ready and sitting on the counter and nobody even told me the order was ready or anything. Looks like all they care about is taking the order and collecting the money. Serving you the product is not very important as long as they have your cash.
I find the service is better and more professional at the Hastings location. Cheers to you guys.
You've heard of the soup Nazi from watching Seinfeld haven't you? Well the owner of La Charcuterie Delicatessen is the Sandwich Nazi and a colorful one at that. I used to visit this place when it was in N.Van, but he has moved to Surrey. I'm glad i found him again because the reason why he's so famous is his beautiful sandwiches and his colorful commentary. The sign in the door says the best sandwich in North America. I agree, but i havn't tried all the sandwiches in North America. Maybe Bobby Flay should have a throwdown with this guy. But the show would have to be rated R. We always have very interesting conversations. For some reason it always resorts to alot of references to sex,( masterbation in general). I can't help but laugh, this guy is hilarious and definitly makes my day when ever i go visit him. In case you didn't know, you can get a free sandwich if you give him a naked picture of yourself. ROFL!
I ordered a 911 sandwich, my usual, but he gave me a sandwich from a bigger order he was preparing. You get your choice of bread which is nice. All the ingredients were fresh. The meat sliced to order. The cleanliness of the place is questionable. Some might think the conversations with this guy is questionable. But the sandwiches are awsome! You can make a few sandwiches with the amount of meat and cheese he gives you.
I think everyone should go there even if you are not hungry, just stand there and enjoy the conversation.
I gave him a poor for service because i didn't get the sandwich i ordered. But i am still happy with the sandwich he gave me. I don't know why he even has a menu. He should take down the menu and just start a collection of pictures of people who got free sandwiches. Lol! Enjoy!
Definetly the BEST sandwich!
I have been going to this place for years. The food is still as good as it was when they first opened. This is where i got hooked on sushi. The food is authentically japanese, everything is made the traditional way. No chinese short cuts here like you see in so many other so called 'Sushi' places. All the chefs are trained the traditional way and make their sushi the traditional way. Everyone there is very polite in the traditional japanese way. It's always a pleasure to eat here westher i am eating in or taking out.
Although they cook maybe use some new dishes and upgrade the decor, i have no complaints about this place and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates traditional authentic japanese cusiine. Kampai!
I decided to try this sushi place in Coq. Since the usual place i go to was closed. When we first entered, we were greeted by a hostess who was nice, but the first thing out of her mouth was it's last call for All You Can Eat. I didn't even know they had AYCE, as it was my first time eating there. So we ordered the all you can eat, we had some maki sushi rolls, some nigiri sushi, tempura, teriyaki meats. They all tasted ok, but the teriyaki beef tasted like dog food, not that i've ever tried dog food. But it definitly wasn't teriyaki. The oyster thing we had was pretty good. I guess the main thing that totally rung an alarm in my head was the awful service. They just plop the plates on your table and walk away, no eye contact no smile, no life in them whatsoever. This has got to be the worst service i have ever experienced in any restaurant or any business establishment.
The hostess was the only person with some sense of service and hospitality skill. But the rudeness of the other people working their and especially the chinese lady behind the counter counting the receipts outways the one kind hostess. I give ambiance a Poor rating because i think ambiance isn't just the way the place looks, it's the feeling of the place. The energy here is so negative. The lady behind the counter was the rudest with the way she took my interac card and slammed the receipt on the counter. No smile, no hello no thank you. I felt like slapping her. This is in no way a true Japanese restaurant. $ui $ha Ya??? i say $ui Sha NO! and never again.
I can see from reading the other reviews nobody left this place happy. BUt yet people still keep going back.
We were at the Tropika on Cambie for a friends birthday. There was about 9 of us plus a couple of kids. They were very accomodating for the kids. The place looks pretty nice, nothing to rave about. The service was good, friendly, amiable, accurate. The food was... well lets just say i was so dissapointed. So disappointed that i didn't eat at this establishment sooner. I totally satisfied my curry craving, i get curry cravings from time to time. We ordered an assortment of satay meat, which was delicious and cooked to perfection, plus a few varieties of curries. The roti was nice with the curry sauce. It was sweet tasting and dipped in the curry sauce took it to the next dimension. The Char Hor Fun was nice for the folks who don't eat so spicy. The name of that dish was good comical dinner conversation, lol. The tropika homestyle fried chicken was awsome. I would definitly eat here again. Now i just have to figure out how to make that wonderful curry sauce so i can enjoy at home.
I tried this place because i heard it was the best donair place in New West from a friend. I'm happy to say i was not disappointed. If i had another thumb i'd give it three thumbs up. The person serving was very friendly and humorous. The writing on the wall keeps you busy while he prepares your juicy succulent donairs. Very good, fresh ingredients. No complaints other than one small one. I bit into a small pebble in my lamb donair. I hope the washing of the vegetables will be more thorough in the future. All in all, good donairs!
I've ordered from this establishment a few times, and all the time the pizza has been great! But the delivery quite frankly sucks. When they say 30 minutes for delivery add an hour and half to it, then you got your pizza. The thing that bothers me the most is the dishonesty. Why tell me that pizza will be here in 30 minutes when they know very well that they can't deliver on time. Just let me know the truth, i would be glad to wait. When i called them to ask where my pizza was, the person on the phone seemed like she didn't know how to talk or like she was being couched on what to say. Understandable, she might have been an trainee. But if that is the case, then all you need to say is, please excuse me, i am in training. Saves the confusion. She did apologize for the pizza being late, which i am sure thay are trained to do since all their pizzas are always delivered late. Also there are things like Map Quest available on the net to find the directions to get to an address that you may not know. That's not rocket science. Another thing about dishonesty, the delivery driver was about to walk off with my Debit card in his machine after he looked at my pin number. That's a red alert. Be careful when ordering from here. Good pizza, but i don't think they know what Dhesi style means. Delivered on india time. What is India time you ask? India time is whenever they want it to be delivered, anytime, as long as it's not on time.
I used to go to Mr. Mikes as a kid in the 80s. It was always a treat to eat out with my family. When i was younger, my pallet probably wasn't as refined as it is today. I thought i would check it out since i havn't been in so long. It was a nice looking pad. We were greeted and escorted to a table promptly and with a smile. The waitress was freakin' gorgeous, but i had to control myself since i was in the presence of a significant other. We ordered mohito's. Scored zero on that one. I'm a mohito fan, and this was pretty bad, they forgot to put the sugar syrop in. Bartender can't get it right the first time. Not very good for a steakhouse/BAR hello!? But i am still thankful on Thanksgiving. I ordered the Bugabo Ribs, my date ordered the mushroom burger. The ribs were served with fries and garlic bread. Nothing too impressive when you look at it. The ribs were a good size served with sauce on the side. The meat was tender and taste was good. The sauce was interesting, but i think it would have been better if the sauce was applied to the rib on the grill to allow the sauce to carmelize a little to add a nice glaze to the meat. I don't know just a thought but i think that would have put those ribs over the top instead of just being good. My date thought her mushroom burger was ok, although she wasn't too fond of the thousand island style sauce on it. She says the best part of the meal was the fries. Good for you Mr. Mikes, you've mastered fries.
Overall i would say it's an ok place, i might go back, but i'm not going to go out of my way or anything. It's a little pricey when you compare what they offer on there menu. It does seem like kind of a childish menu, boring and dated. The servers seemed friendly, but it did not feel genuine. Seemed more like they were upset about working on a long weekend. Service was lacking when we complained about the shoddy workmanship on the drinks. Stick with beer? They can't fukc that one up.
I've eaten here a few times. Most of the time it's pretty good. The sushi is good, well made, tastes good. Although nigiri sushi should traditionally have wasabi in between the fish and rice. My only compliant would be the tempura prawns were not deveined. That's kinda gross. The service is kinda laid back, i wouldn't say it's bad, but they seem like they are very laid back, no care goes into what they do. It's just another job. This restaurant is nearby so that's probably the only reason i go there, there are plenty of sushi places around.
I was downtown for a show and was walking around to look for a bite to eat. I came across the Atlantic Trap & Gill. This location has been the spot for the boys to get together for beers after a game or event at BC Place in the past. It's still a good place for beers and drinks. Although my lovely lady friend was disppointed that they don't serve mixed drinks ??? wtf? The bar looked well stocked, don't know what's going on in that dept. The server was a very friendly guy, although a little laid back. I guess thats a maritime thing? I ordered a seafood platter and chicken wings. The wings were ok, nothing to rave about. Just regular pub fair with that slight taste of previously frozen meat. I was a little disappointed with the seafood platter, the menu said mound of fries, we only received a lump of fries. The fish was soaking in oil and was very mushy, the shrimp was pretty good, and the lobster sticks were ok. BUt nothing to rave about. The lobster had a slight taste of ginger which is different. Would i go back? Probably for a beer after the game. I don't think i would have their fish again, it was truly disgusting. Captain Highliner can do better. I would give them another try to see if they improve, everyone deserves a second chance.
I heard good things about Amelia Restaurant so i decided to check it out. We went for breakfast. There is no parking so you have to park on the street or pay the meter. The place looks very old, and when you enter it smells very old inside. The decor is dated, it's like being in someone's home. Service was friendly and prompt. I ordered the #5 veggie omelet with pan fried potatoes and toast. It was a fair portion and it tasted pretty good although a little under-seasoned. I usually like the food to be pre-seasoned. You shouldn't have to add anything like salt or pepper. But i understand they cook for a variety of diets and tastes and this is the norm for practically every restaurant out there except the better ones. For 5.75 it was a great deal. My partner ordered buttermilk pancakes, i guess you can't go wrong for 4.95. She did say it was kind of soggy and doughy as opposed to fluffy and light. I rated a mediocre for food because it wasn't really anything special, it was just ok because of lack of seasoning. But i think i would return here, the value and service make up for the shortfalls. I would pick this place over Denny's. I am looking forward to trying their Curry Laksa and Malaysian fried rice in the future.
OMG! This is a little gem in the middle of nowhere. I have heard good things about this little pizza joint in Merrit, B.C. So i decided to check it out and i was not disappointed. I was with a large group we all ordered Calzones which is just a pizza folded in half. They are huge, and they are really good. Definitly have to go back there. If you are passing Merrit, you have to stop by this little place.
I have been ordering take out and delivery from Sun Gong for maybe the last ten years. They used to be the best in town, but i'm sorry to say that is no longer true. It's maybe the worst in town now. The food used to be outstanding, but now it's just ok. The service (delivery, phone ettiquette) was the usual, now it needs some serious attention, i feel like i am being barked at when i place an order. Value is still ok, but considering the amount of times they substitute ingredients, this brings the value down.
I know this is a take out restaurant, and there really isn't much to be said about the cleanliness of the place. have you seen the place lately? If you saw the kitchen you would not be ordering from there anymore. I swear i could see cockroaches peaking out from the corners. It is a total pig stye. I can't beleive they are even still operating. Have they had a health inspection lately? I was disgusted that they serve food to the public out of that place. Shut it down!
i frequent Capilano Sushi for lunch on a regular basis. Mostly because the price is very reasonable and it beats a burger and fries any day of the week. I usually get take out and the orders are usually ready in about 10 minutes if they aren't too busy. But i always seem to get really weird looks when i pick up my food. They are quite rude. Other Japanese restaurants i have been to the people are very polite and friendly. But not this place. Have a shot of Saki and take a chill pill or something, a smile wouldn't hurt anyone. Tempura is a little greasy and the rice from Chicken teriyaki dish tasted funny on a few occasions.
I have driven by this place a few times and decided to try it. The woman serving me was very pleasant. I ordered some take out hot wings. The lady there told me it will take baout 15 minutes since they make everything fresh. It felt like i was in for a treat. So i took em home and tried some. The wings were way too salty and tasted stale. They were also quite rubbery. I thought the regular chicken would be better which i havn't tried yet. BUt after that experience, i think i will just keep on going. I noticed someone else had the same comment about the chicken, i wonder if they change their oil regularly.
