Fresh, Delicious & Served with a Smile
Submitted Saturday, January 19, 2013 - 10:53am [Dine in]

Stopped by this tiny place for a quick lunch and managed to get a seat. We ordered a meatball sub, a veggie sub and prawn salad rolls. Everything was fresh and tasty. The buns were awesome with the perfect amount of filling. For around $12, the value is incredible! One of the best things about this establishment is the service. The gentleman at the till had a genuine smile the whole time. All of the staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. I will definitely go back!

Dined here for the first time using a Groupon. It was a weekday night and about 1/3 full. Service was very good; although a bit of a slow start for someone to come to our table. All was forgotten after tasting the food.

We tried the prawn cakes which were nicely fried, along with a bowl of the tom yum goong soup - very tasty. We also had the spicy thai fried rice with chicken along with the beef panang curry. Everything was served piping hot and I was extremely impressed with the portion size. Usually I have had panang around the city that uses strip of beef, but this panang was like a stew with big chunks of meat that I literally could cut with my spoon. It was absolutely delicious and there was enough leftovers for one of us to have lunch the next day.

Tasty food, really good service, comfortable room. The only sad thing I can say is that I wish I would have tried this sooner. Really enjoyed it and will definitely be back!

Had lunch here a couple of weeks ago and loved it. Now this is a place I will go back to! It was very busy at lunch so we had to wait about 20 mins or so to sit at the small bar. I think they could benefit from 2 waitresses and really pump it out a lot faster, but the waitress was very nice.

A friend and I split a French Onion soup and a ham and cheese baguette that oozed out gobs of melted cheese. The pork schnitzel baguette was also delicious. The room is small, cute and had a nice French feeling to it. For the portion size and the delicious-ness, the value is fantastic.

Just Okay

The first question I ask myself after dining somewhere new is "would I come back"? Can't say that I will be going back to Mamak any time soon. There is no ambiance. It's a room with a few tables. Service was just ok. When I asked for a drink list, they didn't have one...but didn't offer to rattle off what was available, so they missed out on more sales. Not that I think they cared.

The roti was pretty good - very flaky. I found the sauce a bit salty but it wasn't bad. The rendang was tasty but didn't come to the table very hot - just lukewarm. It came with rice that was overcooked and sticky. The nasi goreng was nowhere near what Hawker's serves up. It too was overcooked and sticky and there is no way that the rice was fried. I am pretty sure I saw one of the cooks pour frozen vegetables out of a bag. Disappointing once again. This doesn't come close to a "hidden gem" in my books.

What a great little place. Service is fast and efficent. The food is fresh and delicious. Some people say it is a bit pricey but not really when you consider the ingredients being used. We usually frequent a bunch of places in Gastown and make La Taqueria one of our "tapas" stops. Will go back again and again.

Just Okay
Submitted Friday, July 23, 2010 - 9:45pm [Dine in]

I read about Cafeteria in a recent "We" paper. Quote: "This is seriously good food, minus all the seriousness." Yes, the servers were attentive, friendly and non-pretentious but the menu was. Really? You have to make me guess as to what each item is on the board? Halibut cheeks and chicken wings...on the same plate? Really?

I had a paysanne salad. It was ok but the pork was over salty and the poached quail egg was hard. The steak florentina was okay but the onion rings on top didn't seem to match. Plus the bread underneath the salad was mushy. And what Italian serves feta cheese with a panzanella salad? The server said there was feta cheese in it but we didn't notice any. I think the price for the steak was fair but the salad was overpriced. Not rushing to go back.

Have been a few times to this place and love it. The room and decor is fabulous. Service is solid. Most importantly, the food is outstanding. Love the braised bamboo shoots and pork belly. Duck congee was surprisingly good. Can be a bit expensive overall, but is worth it for something different. It's great that more places like this are opening up in the area.

Great Ocean Views But Terrible Food
Submitted Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - 10:54am [Dine in]

The views here of English Bay are gorgeous. The service is inattentive. The pub wasn't very busy yesterday, but for some reason it took forever to get drinks and food. The dry ribs were ok but small in size. The burgers were tough and extremely boring. The bacon was so over-cooked, we had to send all three of them back. Reasonably-priced drinks. Would possibly go back only for a drink but never for food. It's too bad that so many ocean-front restaurants can't get it right.

Delicious Breakfast
Submitted Sunday, June 28, 2009 - 7:12pm [Dine in]

If you don't like being around plenty of children, this probably isn't the place for your morning coffee/breakfast; however, we don't have kids but stopped by anyway for breakfast this morning. (Grab a seat outside if you want more peace and quite). Surprisingly, most kids were well-behaved (probably because the establishment provides many things for little kids to entertain themselves with). Apart from that, breakfast was fantastic. Delicious scrambled eggs using free-range, organic eggs, accompanied with a variety of cherry tomatoes, olive tapanade, fresh basil and those DELICIOUS polenta "croutons". LOVED their raspberry, pear, ricotta cheese and almond muffins...and I'm not even a fan of muffins. Great coffee. Would like to see more of these restaurants in Vancouver. Good value, good service...will go back again.

Salsa & Agave is always fresh and always delicious. Particularily like the chilaquiles and beef with the yummy tomatillo sauce. The burritos are substantial and the toastados very good. Really enjoy all of the salsas. The tres leches cake reminds me of home. Overall super value and great service. We will continue to go back over and over again - whether it is to dine in or take out.

Submitted Sunday, June 28, 2009 - 6:58pm [Dine in]

Went here during Car Free Day a few weeks ago. Service was fine and ambiance is nice but, unfortuantely, the food didn't wow us over. The paella was just ok - not something to write home about and doesn't come close to being a true paella. The flank steak with chimichurri was quite small. Have had better value at other restaurants.

Have been here quite a few times and have always had great food. The service is great at the restaurant; however, sometimes when calling for a reservation, the person on the end isn't super friendly or accommodating. In terms of food, everything we have tried has been very good - salmon, steak frites, tenderloin, lemon tarts, etc. Good atmosphere. Will go back.

We have been going here steadily for the past couple of years. The dosas are paper thin and always delicious. Love the roti with chicken gravy and also the beef curry. Even their Thalis on Tuesday nights are interesting - a great opportunity to try a bunch of different vegetarian dishes. Everything we've ordered is full of flavor. Service is very friendly. Heard they are opening another restaurant a couple of doors down. Can't wait!
