New owners - Better Dining
Submitted Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - 8:36am [Dine in]

If you have not visited Taverna Gorgona since new owners took over in December 2009, visit again.

There has been a remarkable improvement in the food, although the new owners have maintained menu (with minor adjustments). The family, from Greece, knows how to cook. Appearance and freshness of the food were excellent. The decor is the same, but this is really an entirely different experience from days of yesteryear.

We went on a Saturday night. The restaurant was busy, but the staff was able to easily handle everything, as was the kitchen. We were advised early that a large party could slow down our order. We were not rushed in our decisions, however, and when our order was placed, wait time was very good (15-20 min for each course).

For starters we tried saganaki and calamari, both of which were very well executed. The calamari was moist, nicely breaded, and not overcooked. The saganaki was a bit small to share with four people, a nice portion for two, and was served with a quartered pita bread - again, a nice amount.

The mousaka was unbelievably good; the souvlaki excellent. A chicken and prawn linguini in a cream sauce was nicely done (pasta a bit overcooked for my taste) and the sauce was fresh and not cloying. Portion sizes were not quite as overindulgent as some Greek restaurants tend to be, which was welcome.

We were treated to a complimentary dessert - Ekmek, made in the restaurant (not ordered from a food service company - hooray!) - which was absolutely delicious, the custard light, and fresh.

We will go again - and so should you!
