A Find
Submitted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 - 2:30pm [Dine in]

We had a late lunch here on Tuesday, May 26th. The staff welcomed us, explained the buns and patiently waited for us to decide what to order. We had delicious bowls of homemade chicken soup with lots of chicken in it then ordered a pepperoni cheese bun and a pastrami/cheese stuffed bun. Both were good. There were probably more bun varieties earlier in the day. And we will try a salad another day. We were told about the garden in the back and ate outside in the sheltered area. Leaving we smelled the cinnamom buns just being taken out of the oven and couldn't resist! Good choice. Very tasty and not too sweet. We will return.

Late Lunch
Submitted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 - 1:59pm [Dine in]

There was a line out the door even at 2pm. The lady behind us left her family in the line and went to the cash and paid for their ice cream cones so they could leave when served. This was a good idea as there is a single line and one tends to end up waiting until the person in front has their food regardless of what it is or what you're ordering. We ordered chowder, a salmon roll, quiche and coffee. ($18.64) The food was good, sitting outside in the sunny but wind protected patio, the best. We walked out to Ogden Point when done and it would have been nice to have something warm when we returned if the wait was shorter. We'll return if the opportunity presents itself and the line is short.

Great Value!

This restaurant was also on a recommended list from "locals". We arrived about 5:30 on a Thursday without reservations but they were able to seat us. We didn't get a table by the window but we were close and had a good view of the harbour and the boats moving in and out. We chose the three course menu from the Dinner Series offered Sunday to Thursday for $30.00. This was great value. We enjoyed the Brie Cheese Fritter and Chicken Liver Pate to start. This was followed by the Seafood Fricasee and the Smoked Braised Pork Shoulder. Both were delicious. Dessert was the Rhubarb Streusal Tart. With glasses of the recommended wines, tea, coffee and the views, this was another special evening. The service was frendly and efficient. Things slowed a bit as the restaurant filled up and reservations would be a good idea especially if you plan on eating later in the evening (6 - 7 pm). We left about 8 pm and enjoyed sitting in the park watching the shipping activities in the Strait of Juan De Fuca until the mosquitoes arrived. The restaurant is on our list for a future return visit (perhaps for brunch).

It Hit the Spot

We'd parked near this restaurant earlier in the day and read the newspaper review posted in the window (closed after lunch until 4:30). Finding ourselves hungry but not knowing what we wanted we headed in to see if we could find some war wonton soup - a staple for us when we're in this "don't know" mood. The restaurant was busy but not full and we were seated quickly. We ordered the soup and said we would order other dishes if we were still hungry. The soup was good and full of vegetables, won tons and meat though the broth wasn't as flavourful as the soup we order at home in Calgary. Trying to decide on more food, the waitress asked what we liked, made some suggestions and said they could make just about any variations we liked. We ordered some special chop suey, pork and shrimp with pea pods and rice. Everthing was plentiful and tasty. Service was efficient and the surroundings pleasant. We might eat there again if in the area but probably wouldn't make it a "destination" dinner.

Eat-in Next Time
Submitted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 - 12:29pm [Dine in]

This location was recommended when I asked about finding some good fish and chips. After a second trip (they were in Disneyland until May 19) I am able to confirm that the fish, chips and slaw are indeed good. I took mine, wrapped in newspaper, home to enjoy. Next time I will eat in as things had cooled a bit by the time I got to eat them. The food was good, especially the fish. Service was friendly and many in the restaurant appeared to be regular customers. Posting a menu outside may be helpful. There are places to wait for your order outside and they will call you. Inside is quite small. I expect this is a very busy place later in the week. You can phone your order in ahead of time. I'll return.

Satisfied!
Submitted Wednesday, May 27, 2009 - 3:15am [Dine in]

The other night while searching for somewhere to go for dinner, we remembered the Roadhouse. To our delight roast beef with yorkshire pudding was the special for the evening. At $11.00 a plate this was great value. Dinner was served with vegetables(broccoli, yams, beet, carrot), garlic mashed potatoes and they even managed to find us some rarer slices of roast beef. My yorkshire pudding was a little "dark" but tasted okay. With a half bottle of wine and a shared dessert, we had a good evening. Service was friendly and efficient. We're looking forward to a return date for prime rib night on Friday.

A Pleasant Surprise
Submitted Wednesday, May 27, 2009 - 2:46am [Dine in]

Having just arrived in the city, we asked (while shopping) for a recommendation for a nice place for dinner. The Black Olive was suggested and directions given. We had no reservation but were accommodated and seated at the back of the restaurant by the bar. We chose the evening special, an appetizer (clams), main (veal) and dessert (peanutbutter/chocolate cheesecake). The food was delicious! Great value. The portions were "just right" and with a half liter of wine, we enjoyed a special evening. We look forward to our next visit. (We will make a reservation as the restaurant was full when we left at 8).

Barb's Place Fish & Chips310 St. Lawrence Street, Victoria
Disappointed
Submitted Wednesday, May 27, 2009 - 2:20am [Dine in]

Having visited the warf a few times and never eating at Barb's because the line was so long, we were pleased to stop the other day when the line was reasonable and moved quickly. The sun was shining but the wind was blowing so a bowl of chowder and some fish and chips were ordered. The pagers are an efficient way to tell customers when their order is ready and getting drinks right away helps to pass the time. The chowder was tasty (finding spoons was a challenge) the fries were okay though cool by the time we got to eat them (due to the wind and eating our chowder first), unfortunately the fish was more batter than fish. We had two pieces. One was not bad but we couldn't find the fish in the second.
We may enjoy a cup of chowder another day, but will find our fish and chips elsewhere.
