Pepitas Restaurant2015 Burrard, Vancouver
Decent Food, Good Location
Submitted Monday, March 19, 2007 - 12:45am [Dine in]

Being a former resident of Kits, I used to go to Pepita's once every couple of months. Always busy, good food with big portions, and live music on the weekends. Checked it out again this past Saturday with a buddy of mine. I'm reminded of the saying, "the more things change, the more they stay the same"

Food - Good. Always big portions and pretty tasty. Any of the chicken entrees are pretty good, and if its meat you're craving, the carne asada is always a nice choice.

Service - Surprisingly good, especially for the weekend. Our server came back often to offer us drink refills and to ask us how everything was.

Ambiance - Love the decor! Tons of Mexican stuff everywhere, and even the tables have tiled placements. The live guitarist / singer played a variety of mexican/spanish songs.

Good Food, Solid Service
Submitted Monday, March 19, 2007 - 12:10am [Dine in]

Checked out this place with a close friend on a rainy Thursday evening. Was a little tricky to get to since Cambie is pretty much closed due to the RAV line construction.

Food - Really, really good. Mind you, my friend used to come here all the time, so she knows what's good on the menu. Had some huge Thai-style drink that was served in a wood bowl with a couple of straws to share. The pineapple rice was actually served in a pineapple! How cool is that? Satay was really good, but pretty small portion. Veggies and curry chicken were also good.

Service - Solid. Some recent views have been pretty harsh on rating the service, but I was fairly pleased with it.

Ambiance - Pretty nice for an asian restaurant. Usually they're hole-in-the-wall places. This place seemed nice and new and it even had clean bathrooms!

Gorgeous View, Solid Food
Submitted Sunday, March 18, 2007 - 11:50pm [Dine in]

Checked out Aqua Riva for the first time with my cousin and a few friends visiting from Seattle. Stunning night view of Canada Place and the waterfront.

Food - Good, but pricey for what you get. We shared the Clams & Mussels and Lobster Springrolls for the appetizer. Tasty, but fairly small portions. For my main, the Wood Grilled Arctic Char was pretty good.

Service - Solid service, attentive and pleasant. Though I thought our server was a bit too "buddy buddy" with us, especially for a restaurant of this class. Perhaps its because we were a young group compared to the other patrons.

Ambiance - Classy interior with a superb view of downtown's waterfront. Can't ask for much more than that.

Good Entertainment, Slow Service
Submitted Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 4:38pm [Dine in]

Unique experience. Nice place with tasty food and a cool atmosphere. Wouldn't mind going back sometime in the future.

Food - Tasty meats. Interesting way of serving food - waiters go around with BBQ'd meats on a stick. Tried everything they had including chicken, veal, ostrich, buffalo adnd lamb. Salad bar is also decent.

Service - Friendly, but slow. Came on a packed Saturday night so that may explain it.

Ambiance - Great entertainment with the dancing girls and the live music. There seemed to be quite a few groups there, so it was nice and boisterously noisy.

Service so Bad, it was Actually Funny
Submitted Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 11:23pm [Dine in]

Years ago I remembered White Spot as being a good place for breakfast/brunch. Checked out this location this past weekend and was seriously not impressed.

Food - Decent, but arrived very late. Soup was supposed to come before the main meal, but was actually served several minutes after the main arrived. Water glasses were dirty, and the coffee was horrible.

Service - Terrible. I ordered the 'hearty brunch' with bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, with my choice of eggs and bread, and they were both not what I wanted. I ordered my eggs sunny-side up with sourdough toast and received my eggs over-easy with multi-grain toast. My significant other ordered the clam chowder and received a tomato basil veggie? We brought each mistake to the attention of our waitress, who corrected each order... eventually. She must have apologized about 5 times during our meal. It was actually pretty funny by the end of it all. What a circus!

Ambiance - Good, convenient location, but that's about it. Loud atmosphere, complete with screaming, crying kids and yelling parents. Felt like I was in a daycare centre.

Heard a couple of the tables around us complaining as well. Slow service, mistaken orders and terrible coffee. I won't be coming back for brunch anytime soon.

Popular Place with Tasty Food
Submitted Friday, February 16, 2007 - 2:33pm [Dine in]

Popular mexican restaurant in the trendy Kits neighbourhood. Not authentic mexican or spanish food, but tasty nonetheless. This place is always packed with people, and they offer a huge drink selection, and some solid entrees. Checked out this place recently on a weekday, and we still had to wait 20 minutes for a table just before their closing time.

Food - Good. They give you a complimentary basket of tortilla chips and salsa. For the entree my significant other ordered the crab special, and I sampled the chicken chimichanga. Both meals were solid and decent portions for the pice.

Service - Okay. Only one waittress for our entire section, but she was working pretty hard and fairly fast and efficiently. Always checked back to see how things were and if we needed anything.

Ambiance - Great. Best thing about the restaurant. The decor is really nice, with a definite latin american feel.

Poor Food, Great Place for Drinks
Submitted Wednesday, February 14, 2007 - 4:28am [Dine in]

Having lived in Kits a couple years ago, I used to visit Hell's Kitchen quite frequently. I remember their pizza being pretty good, and their drinks being quite affordable, especially given the area - Kits is fairly pricey. Checked this place out recently with my significant other and realized that things were not what I remembered.

Food - Poor... and disappointing. The pizzas have really gone down hill. As my SO put it, "It tastes like 99-cent pizza". The overall flavour was okay, but I don't think the ingredients were very fresh, and I believe the pizza was under cooked as well. Also tried the duck springrolls - I've had better springrolls from the free sample tables at Costco.

Service - Decent. Though it is mainly a bar, the staff does try hard to give it a restaurant feeling.

Ambiance - Great. Much nicer decor than I remember. I like the candles at each table and the comfy couches and pillows for your back. I always like the feeling of dining in a nice, dark restaurant.

Come for drinks and you won't be disappointed... though I can't say the same thing about the food. I'd come back for drinks with friends, but would most likely steer clear of the grub.

Cho Sun Korean Restaurant3486 Kingsway St., Vancouver
Incredible BBQ, Hidden Gem
Submitted Sunday, February 11, 2007 - 5:58pm [Dine in]

Tried out this place for the first time, at the recommendation of my significant other, this past weekend. I live about 5 minutes from Cho Sun and have literally passed by this place hundreds of times without even knowing it was there. The outside looks pretty aweful - like a run down tire shop! However, inside its lovely and overall I had a wonderful experience.

Food - Excellent. The BBQ is superb. Tasty, marinated, generous servings of beef, chicken, pork and steak. The seafood platter was also incredible. All BBQ combos come with 'bottomless' side dishes of salad, steamed rice, kim chi, flavored potato, and a mushroom, broccoli mix. I enjoyed every one!

Service - Friendly and prompt service. Probably the best service at an asian restaurant I've ever received.

Ambiance - Surprisingly great! Like I said, the outside of the restaurant looks like garbage, but the inside is incredible. Hard wood private booths with (what looked like hand-woven) seat cushions. Nice grill and food/ventillation fan at each table. Very clean place.

Excellent Sushi, Good Value
Submitted Sunday, February 11, 2007 - 5:22pm [Dine in]

I've been to this place three times in the last six months and I've been happy with my experiences overall. They recently moved next door, so their restaurant is bigger and nicer now.

Food - Excellent food. The sushi is really fresh and is served pretty fast once you've placed your order. The tempura is great, the sashimi is awesome, and the Alaska roll is superb.

Service - Okay. Don't expect typical restaurant quality service. The waitresses look like they just graduated high school. As such, they seem very nice and they try hard, but ultimately the service levels are lacking.

Ambiance - Not bad. But essentially a nice cafeteria with some Japanese decor sprinkled throughout the place.

Sui Sha Ya Japanese Restaurant4820 Kingsway, #236, Burnaby
Decent all you can eat sushi
Submitted Tuesday, February 6, 2007 - 7:33pm [Dine in]

I've eaten at Sui Sha Ya many times and have been pleased overall with my experiences. Some of the previous reviews really made me laugh! But let's be honest - If this restaurant was really as bad as some reviewers made it out to be, they'd have been out of business a long, long time ago.

Food - Pretty good, especially given the cheap, cheap all-you-can-eat price. The sashimi is decent and the rolls are okay, but the tempura, oysters and chicken wings are pretty good. You certainly get your money's worth in food.

Service - Bad. I'll agree about this aspect with other reviewers. Many times orders are taken and never arrive. Sometimes you get double or triple what you ordered, and sometimes you get other people's orders! Just accept it and enjoy the food.

Ambiance - Decent. Nice semi-private booths.

Superb Views, Outstanding Food
Submitted Friday, February 2, 2007 - 3:44am [Dine in]

Highly recommended! Final restaurant on my Dine Out 2007 schedule. I had previously tried Seasons last Summer with great results. When I saw they were offering a Dine Out menu, I just had to put it on my hit list for this year.

Food - Absolutely fantastic. They had 2 dine out options, the $25 and $35 menu. I tried the tomato, lamb, and chocolate cake and my significant other sampled the salmon salad, stuffed chicken breast and lemon tart - both from the $35 menu. The lamb was incredible. Juicy, tender and cooked to perfection. My SO's salmon salad was sublime and the stuffed chicken entree was equally incredible. Both desserts were superb.

Service - Top notch. Very friendly service. I liked how they took our coats, the moment we checked in with the hostess. A couple of nit picky complaints - the waitress didn't refill my SO's drink and didn't offer or ask us if we wanted coffee with our desserts. I would have definitely said yes.

Ambiance - Best of any restaurant I have ever dined at. The views of the city are incredible. The layout of the restaurant is fabulous. Love the candles at each table, and the many fireplaces burning throughout the restaurant.

Good BBQ for the Price
Submitted Thursday, February 1, 2007 - 5:22am [Dine in]

This restaurant was recommended to me and so I checked it out earlier this week with a few friends. Kind of a mix between a diner and a cafeteria, you order your food from the counter and they deliver it to your table.

Food - Pretty solid, especially given the relatively cheap prices. I ordered the 1/2 ribs meal. It came with cornbread, beans, coleslaw and some tasty fries. The ribs were good on their own, but pretty damn tasty when combined with the BBQ sauce they give you.

Service - Quick and friendly. Not really a sit down restaurant though, so its tough to judge this category.

Ambiance - Basic tables and booths, similar to an Earls or Cactus Club. Food comes in a plastic tray/container. They played country music over the speakers and had a lot of southern decor on the walls.

All in all, a good experience and I wouldn't mind going back and trying some of their other dishes. Perhaps I'll also try to check out one of their other locations next time.

Great Brunch, Great Service
Submitted Wednesday, January 31, 2007 - 9:49pm [Dine in]

Not sure why the past reviews have been bad for this place. Each time I've come here for brunch I consume some great food, and receive impeccable customer service.

Food - Great brunch menu. Hearty breakfast and lunch menu for a good value. I've sampled several items on the menu and have enjoyed each of my selections. My favorite so far has been the Inlets' Eggs Benedict. Mmmm...

Service - Outstanding. Profession and courteous. Very prompt and friendly service. Quick refills on the water and coffee and our servers always ask us how our meal is.

Ambiance - Great location on Robson, but not much in terms of view or internal decor. Nice, comfy chairs though.

Great Lunch Specials, Tasty Food
Submitted Friday, January 26, 2007 - 2:27am [Dine in]

Tried out this place for lunch with my significant other. Lunch specials are all under $10 and come with salad, spring roll, rice and a main. Great value for what you get, and even though the place was packed, we received prompt, friendly service.

Food - Excellent. Started with the chicken satay. Loved how it was covered in coconut milk, and the peanut sauce was awesome. My curry was just as good, and the salad and rice were tasty and given in generous portions.

Service - Good. Prompt and friendly service, even though the place was full for lunch.

Ambiance - Decent. Clean place, great location. No decor to speak of. The superb food and fast service more than make up for the lack of ambiance.

Overrated. Disappointing Overall.
Submitted Friday, January 26, 2007 - 2:11am [Dine in]

Restaurant #2 in my Dine Out 2007 schedule. I'd previously heard great things about this restaurant. Even their menu boasted all of the awards they had won in the past. I really, really wanted to like this place. Having said that...

Food - Not impressed at all. I ordered the salad, pork loin, and pear tart, and my significant other had the soup, arctic char, and tiramisu. The salad was tiny, good enough for about 6 bites. No kidding. My SO's soup tasted like flour. The entrees weren't much better. My pork loin was cold, even though the plate was hot, and the texture was so rubbery I felt like I was chewing bubble gum. The arctic char was pretty tasty, but it was also a tiny portion. I don't wanna harp too much about the small portions, but even my 90-pound girlfriend was hungry after our meal. Come on!

The only saving grace for the food was their wonderful desserts. The caramelized pear was superb. Probably the best dessert I've had in years, and I love my desserts! My SO's tiramisu was also really tasty and nicely presented.

Service - Solid, but still lacking, especially for a restaurant of this 'class'. Our table was late, even though we had reservations, and our pre-dinner bread came so late, we had already finished our appetizers. Having said that, our server was friendly and courteous, and apologized for their mistake.

Ambiance - Best part of the dining experience. Great layout for a restaurant. Well designed, nice decor, and dimly lit. Cool bar, and nice view of the kitchen from the dining area.

After a single drink each, plus taxes, the total bill was $95 for a pretty disappointing meal. After all was said and done, we decided we wouldn't be giving this restaurant any return business. Too bad. I really wanted to like this place.

Very disappointing... every time
Submitted Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 2:08pm [Dine in]

I've been to this location a number of times. This first time was my choice, but every time after that has been at the request of someone else. Consistently poor food, and extremely poor service make me wonder how these guys are still in business? It may be the location and the number of tourists who frequent this place... or locals who just can't seem to learn their lesson!

Food - Sampled a number of different items, with consistently bad results. Nachos were stale, potato skins were under-cooked, burgers and fries were cold (almost like leftovers). Just bad.

Service - Very poor. Waitresses are always talking to each other, and seem pretty disinterested in actually doing their job.

Ambiance - Great location, but that's about it.

Best of Franchise Restaurants
Submitted Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 1:51pm [Dine in]

I've been to this restaurant a number of times over the years. As far as franchise restaurants go, The Keg is by far the nicest, most respected brand out there. This location in particular has a unique layout and thus a superb atmosphere.

Food - Great value for your steaks. Good quality steaks, cooked the way you like it. Not overpriced like other Vancouver restaurants.

Service - Always friendly, prompt and courteous.

Ambiance - Fantastic. Certainly the best part of dining at this particular location. The building is great and the layout of the restaurant could not have been done any better. Dim lighting accentuates the candlelight at your table, and allows you to notice the fires scorching in the kitchen.

Nice Restaurant at the Hilton
Submitted Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - 1:19pm [Dine in]

I've been to the Crystal mall countless times and have even attended events at the Hilton ballrooms (near the grille), but never actually knew this restaurant existed until I did a search on 'burnaby restaurants' for the Dine Out 2007 event.

Food - Great value for the $25 meal. I had the Cannelloni, Iron Steak and Chocolate Terrine, and my signficant other had the shrimp salad, BC Salmon, and Creme Brulee. My cannelloni appetizer and chcolate terrine dessert were phenomenal. My steak was okay (though I'm a tough steak critic), but my SO's salmon was incredible.

Service - Impressive. Very professional, courteous, friendly and prompt. No complaints here.

Ambiance - Okay. The restaurant is essentially a dining room within the Hilton Hotel. Nice decor, but no view and the lights could have been dimmed more to set a better mood.

Great Location, Okay Food
Submitted Monday, January 22, 2007 - 12:57pm [Dine in]

I've been to this restaurant a couple of times and have been pleased with my experiences overall.

Food - Okay. The seafood pasta I ordered was fairly tasty, but pretty greasy and heavy. I could only finish about 2/3 of my meal before the thickness got to me. Also previously tried their burgers which were pretty good, but then again, its hard to mess up a burger and fries meal.

Service - Decent. Our server was friendly, though unattentive at times. It bugs me when I have to ask for a 2nd round of beers/drinks or water refills. As noted in other reviews, the staff is very young and attractive.

Ambiance - Great location on Granville Island, but that's about it. Not a fan of the wood tables and chairs. Made me feel like I was kid back at summer camp.

Submitted Monday, January 22, 2007 - 12:39pm [Dine in]

This restaurant is a favorite of my significant other. I'd never been here before so we ventured down late on a Sunday evening and tried out their lobster and steak special.

Food - Pretty good lobster, pretty good steak. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but fairly tasty, cooked just the way I like it, and nicely presented. Also, tried out the Granville Island Winter Ale... mmm, tasty.

Service - We came after the dinner rush, and so we received a lot of attention from our waitress. Friendly and talkative, our server made us feel very welcome.

Ambiance - Not bad. Kind of like dining at an Earl's, but everything is darker. A little too quiet for me, but once again, we came after the dinner prime time.
