Refuel Restaurant1944 West 4th Ave, Vancouver
Tasty Eats, Pricey Menu... and Questionable Service
Submitted Tuesday, April 20, 2010 - 7:32pm [Dine in]

Not overly impressed with my first venture, but its worth another try. Checked out Refuel with my girlfriend and another couple a few months back. Trendy place on 4th Ave in Kits.

Food - Pretty good. Tried out the piggy puffs w/ BBQ spice to start. A tasty treat I used to have as a kid. Had the sloping hill pork for the main, which was excellent, but a fairly small portion. My girlfriend and our other dining partners had the buttermilk chicken, which was absolutely enormous and incredibly tasty. According to my gf, the accompanying jalapeno biscuit was also excellent.

Service - Our server was friendly and prompt - no complaints. What was questionable came after dinner. I left a tip on my visa bill and then signed and left - I left both copies as I never take restaurant receipts. I got a call 30 minutes later from our dining partners, who were just contacted by the restaurant. Apparently they lost the bill and accused me of taking the wrong copy and not leaving a tip. Very poor customer service in my book.

Value & Ambiance - Value is okay. Pretty normal for the Kits area, but pricey none-the-less. The best thing about the restaurant is the ambiance. Very intimate room, with a nice bar at the entrance.

Gotham Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar615 Seymour Street, Vancouver
Excellent Birthday Dinner
Submitted Friday, December 18, 2009 - 4:20pm [Dine in]

Recommended. Checked out Gotham on a Wednesday night for my girlfriend's Birthday. Great steakhouse, with a sophisticated atmosphere, tasty eats, and fantastic service. Be prepared to spend some money.

Food - For the starters we had the crab cakes and beef tenderloin carpaccio. Very tasty, but extremely small portions. For the main I had the special, which had a bit of everything - king crab legs, filet, new york strip, and veggies. My girlfriend had the filet mignon and exclaimed, 'best steak of my life'. For sides we sampled the garlic mashed potatoes, onion rings, and fresh asparagus. Outstanding all around. Biggest onion rings I've ever seen in my life.

Service - Great service from the time we walked through the door. Jackets were immediately taken at the complimentary coat check. Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable. Can't remember the table conversation, but I remember him being quite funny and engaging.

Values & Ambiance - Really fantastic ambiance. Beautifully dark room, tables lit by candlelight. The value is where this place is lacking. With tip, our bill came out to $200 and we didn't even have any alcoholic drinks. Be prepared to lighten the wallet a bit to fully enjoy the experience.

Great Seafood, Nice Place
Submitted Thursday, December 17, 2009 - 4:25pm [Dine in]

Recommended. Checked out this place a few days ago as part of a work Christmas function. Nice restaurant, great ambiance, excellent seafood, fantastic view, all nestled away on the Port Moody coastline.

Food - Sampled the Calamari Fries and Sweet Chili Chicken for the appys. The Calamari fries were great! For my main, the Coconut Tiger Shrimp was superb, but a bit on the greasy side. Best part of the meal was the desserts. Sampled almost all the desserts - best ones were the Mocha Ice Cream Pie and Molten Chocolate Brownie!

Service - Although the restaurant was not very busy, we only had one server looking after our table of 13. He was very friendly, and attentive, but not very fast. Orders took quite a while to be taken and fulfilled, and drink refills were slower than expected.

Value & Ambiance - Our lunch was complimentary, but the prices seemed very reasonable. This is definitely a nice place, so a bit more expensive than the average restaurant. Really superb views of the Port Moody coastline, and such beautiful decor on the inside. Love the huge fireplace!

Excellent Crab, Great Service
Submitted Sunday, November 29, 2009 - 5:39pm [Dine in]

Recommended. A pricey seafood restaurant with excellent service, tasty crabs, and a great ambiance.

Food - Had the Dungeness Crab with mashed potatoes and veggies. The crab and melted butter were superb. Took me about 1.5 hours to finish my meal. Well worth the time. Girlfriend had the beef tenderloin and enjoyed her dish.

Service - Our server was fantastic. Group of 20+ people in the upper party room and we always felt well taken care of throughout the night. Drinks were flowing.

Value & Ambiance - Be prepared to spend about $50-70/person for an entree and a couple of drinks. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. Ambiance was very nice - there's actually a full grown tree inside with some branches and lights hanging over the dining area. Very unique.

Beyond Restaurant & Lounge1015 Burrard St., Vancouver
Nice Spot at the Century Plaza
Submitted Sunday, November 29, 2009 - 5:28pm [Dine in]

Recommended. Checked out Beyond for a friend's birthday on a Friday night prior to heading down to Yuk Yuks. Nice place with some tasty food.

Food - Sampled the Surf and Turf - crab cake, flat iron steak, mashed potatoes and veggies. Crab cake was excellent, though a bit on the small side. Flat iron steak cooked medium-rare was superb.

Service - Good service, especially for our 15+ person group size. The only issue was paying for the food, as there was only 1 credit card / debit card processing machine and it took forever.

Value & Ambiance - A bit pricey for what you get. Ambiance was nice, though a funny cross between sports bar in the lounge area and fancy restaurant in the back.

Good Latin Food, Nice Place
Submitted Thursday, November 26, 2009 - 8:40am [Dine in]

Recommended. Nice place on Commercial Drive, with a Latin feel and comfortable atmosphere.

Food - I ordered the Veal Marsala, which was very tender and tasty. The accompanied ravioli and veggies were excellent. I also sampled my friends' nachos and Rabbit Stew. Very good!

Service - Friendly and prompt service on a Monday evening. The server was very pleasant and quite attentive. I love how he referred to the Rabbit Stew. Upon serving the dish he asked, "Who ordered Bugs Bunny?"

Value & Ambiance - Decent value for money. A little pricier than some spots on Commercial, but worth it in my opinion. Nice spot along the Drive, and decent decor inside. We were one of only a handful of customers on a Monday night.

William Tell, The765 Beatty Street, Vancouver
Great Place, Incredible Ambiance
Submitted Monday, February 2, 2009 - 2:02am [Dine in]

Checked out the William Tell on a Friday night as our last Dine Out Vancouver restaurant for 2009. A great place hidden away in the Georgian Court hotel.

Food - I had the Escargot, Scallops and Meringue . The escargot was excellent, the Scallops incredible and the Meringue was classically elegant and tasty. My girlfriend had the Fraser Valley Duck for the main, which was excellent.

Service - Our server was great. Very attentive and courteous. Its all in the details. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was that the dishes were noticeably slow.

Value & Ambiance - Quite pricey for what you get. Even with the Dine Out menu, the value for money wasn't quite there. The Ambiance was incredible. Easily the best part of the experience. Incredible decor and really a classically elegant place.

Great Dessert and Atmosphere
Submitted Wednesday, January 28, 2009 - 11:01am [Dine in]

Checked out Parkside on a Tuesday night as part of Dine Out Vancouver 2009. Nice little place, hidden away in the residential area of Haro Street.

Food - Had the gulf prawns to start followed by the low temp shortrib and lemon tart for dessert. The prawn dish, garnished with orange, olives and bacon, was incredible. Shortrib was pretty good, but I've had better. My girlfriend had the minestrone, saddle of rabbit, and chocolate bar & melted chocolate drink for dessert. The saddle of rabbit was excellent and the chocolate dessert was phenomenal. Though medium-to-small serving in size, overall they offered some very tasty, satisfying dishes.

Service - Very good service. Two servers were looking after us the entire night. Both were friendly and prompt with drink requests.

Ambiance & Value - As noted in previous reviews, this place is quite pricey. The ambiance was great though. A small, intimate venue that's perfect for a romantic date, or a relaxed upscale dinner with friends. Recommended.

Diva at The Met645 Howe Street, Vancouver
Excellent Service, Outstanding Food
Submitted Tuesday, January 20, 2009 - 11:40am [Dine in]

Checked out Diva on a Monday night as part of Dine Out Vancouver 2009. A nice place, apparently re-modeled (but I hadn't been there previously), just off the lobby of the Metropolitan Hotel Vancouver.

Food - I would describe our dishes, not so much as "meals", but as "edible art". I had the Coconut Curried Milk & Yam Soup to start, which was fantastic, but a fairly small portion. My main was the Seared BC Albacore Tuna and dessert Caramelized cheesecake. The main was decent, and the dessert was phenomenal. I also had an "extra course" of Pan-fried scallops which were absolutely incredible.

My girlfriend had the Brandade Salad, Braised Beef Shortrib and the Chocolate Desserts. The Espresso pot de creme (which came with the chocolate) was probably the best dessert I've ever tasted in my life. Amazing!

Service - Our waiter was excellent. Exactly what you'd expect from this type of restaurant. My girlfriend loved that he referred to us as "the lady and the gentleman". Drinks were promptly served and re-filled. Though food service was a bit slow, I enjoyed the relaxed pace, which fit in quite nicely with the comfortable, intimate setting.

Ambiance & Value - Not a great value; small portions for a higher price, but that's to be expected. Ambiance was nice. Candlelight, soft music, open-style kitchen, and a beautiful bar.

Revel Room238 Abbott Street, Vancouver
Tasty Food, Nice Venue, Pricey
Submitted Monday, January 19, 2009 - 1:23am [Dine in]

Checked out this place a couple nights ago for a friend's birthday. A trendy place in Gastown with a good atmosphere and convenient location. Unfortunately the food was too pricey, service was lacking, and the cocktails disappointing. I will not be coming back.

Food - Very tasty food, but unfortunately there wasn't much of it. The spring rolls were tiny, and the mini-burgers were finished in 1 bite. After a $50 bill I was still pretty hungry. Cocktails were notably strong but lacked taste.

Service - A busy Friday night + a large birthday group = very slow service. Our waitress was busy with our group and another few tables.

Ambiance - Great location in Gastown and nice decor.

Decent Vegetarian Place
Submitted Thursday, January 15, 2009 - 12:31pm [Dine in]

Had a group dinner for my volunteer gig at Foundation about a week ago. My favorite kind of food is free food :-)

Food - Had the Peanut Pasta. Sounds bizarre I know, but it was actually very tasty and enjoyable. My colleague had the "tofu bacon" to go along with his veggie burger and he said it was pretty decent. Really? I think I'd prefer the real thing. Appetizer of salad, pita bread, dip, and fried tofu was pretty good as well. Sangria was marginally passable, but that's what you get for ordering Sangria at a vegetarian non-Spanish restaurant.

Service - Poor and pretty slow. Though friendly, our server looked disinterested in providing us with any service what-so-ever. Or maybe he was just being true to his hippy ways.

Ambiance - A "hole-in-the-wall" kind of place. I do like that they played some pretty obscure hip-hip in the background. The place seems to be fairly popular with the late-20's crowd; I would describe it as the chic place to be.

Better than Granville Location
Submitted Thursday, January 15, 2009 - 12:13pm [Dine in]

Checked out this location again for my friend's birthday a few weeks ago. Good Korean BBQ and All-You-Can-Eat for the price.

Food - Korean BBQ is always good. Sushi, rolls and sashimi could be better. The teriyaki steak and teriyaki beef was not very good. Chewy and tough consistency. I remember the food being better.

Service - Fast and courteous. Orders almost always come very fast. Almost too fast, if you ask me.

Ambiance - Love the BBQ in the middle of the table. Love that there are "boat booths" at this location. Other than that though, not much other noticeable decor.

Still an Excellent Spot
Submitted Thursday, January 15, 2009 - 12:02pm [Dine in]

Thank goodness for Dine Out Vancouver! Checked out Joe Fortes for the first time this year. Excellent food, great location. I always enjoy going to Joe's!

Food - Had the Oysters to start, Grilled Albacore Tuna macaroni for the main, and Vanilla Creme Brule for the dessert. All were fantastic. My girlfriend's choices of Clam Chowder, sirloin steak, and lava cake were just as tasty. I was also pleased to see they had the Granville Island Winter Ale on tap - an awesome beer, and I enjoyed a couple of pints.

Service - Always friendly and courteous. Service was quite prompt for such a busy Wednesday night.

Ambiance - Loud and boisterous. I loved it! Piano player was the highlight of last year, but our table was on the opposite site of the restaurant this time.

Very popular, cheap prices, small portions
Submitted Friday, December 5, 2008 - 6:43pm [Dine in]

My girlfriend and I checked out this place two months back with another couple. I'm a little mixed on my experience here. First off, the place was packed on a Friday night and it took about 1.5hrs for us to get a table.

Food - The food was pretty good. Prices were fairly cheap, but then again, the portions were small as well. I ordered their house special pasta, which was excellent, but it was a small portion so it left me still a bit hungry after my meal.

Service - Our server was very friendly, but the place was very busy so the service was lacking. Food wait was lengthy, and drink service was slow.

Ambiance - Best part of the experience. Great patio and ideal location in Kits. I had a great time, but I think it was due to the people I was with, and not the food or this particular restaurant.

Great Sushi for the Price
Submitted Friday, December 5, 2008 - 6:13pm [Dine in]

I frequent this place with my girlfriend. Their specials are very reasonable for the price, and I love that it comes in a boat. Ah, to feel like a child again!

Food - The sushi is pretty good, especially given the price. The edamame, gyoza, tempura, teriyaki chicken, and dynamite rolls are very tasty! Food so tasty in fact... that my mouth actually was watering writing the previous sentence! Mmmmm...

Service - It always makes me laugh when people give Asian restaurants bad reviews on service... get used to it and get over it people! The service is decent at this place, and I've certainly received worse service at similar Japanese restaurants around Vancouver.

Overall, I would recommend this restaurant. Tasty food and good value keep us coming back, time and time again.

Tasty BBQ, Great Value
Submitted Friday, December 5, 2008 - 6:00pm [Dine in]

Checked out this place last Monday with a few friends. I didn't realize it was an "order at the counter" experience! I would compare it to a fancier McDonald's which serves Southern BBQ.

Food - I tried the pulled pork and it was great. The accompanied fries, cornbread and fixings were equally as tasty. Excellent value for money, clearly because the service is limited and you're basically given your order directly from the cook! Their brand of colas, ginger ale and soft-drinks also deserve a mention... not sure what it was, but it came in a classic glass bottle and was mighty tasty!

I'm pleased with my experience and would visit this place again. I would recommend this restaurant if you're in the mood for BBQ at a good value.

Decent All You Can Eat
Submitted Thursday, May 1, 2008 - 1:51pm [Dine in]

Recommended. Good value for money, especially for lunch. Been there several times. Not the freshest, most authentic Japanese I've ever had, but not bad. I think its run by the same people who do Richmond Sushi and Robson Sushi, as they have the same PDA ordering system.

Food - Pretty good for all you can eat. I always enjoy their dynamite, alaska, and tempura rolls. Edamame for appy and Mango pudding for dessert always rounds out the meal nicely.

Service - Fast and prompt. Especially for lunch, this place is a well oiled machine. Orders taken quickly, food arriving over the next 3 to 4 minutes.

Ambiance - Ikea furniture. Not so authentic for a Japanese restaurant I think. Nice sushi bar though. Always nice to see the chefs working hard.

Recommended. Overall a good experience. Nice service, pleasant atmosphere and tasty food. Pretty basic decor. Good value with the entertainment book.

Food - I ordered the Greek combo. The ribs were okay, but the chicken was really good. Made me wish I had ordered the chicken platter instead! My girlfriend's beef souvlaki was also very tasty. Huge portions, as I wasn't able to finish my meal.

Service - Friendly service from our waitress. Orders were taken in a timely fashion and food was ready in normal amount of time.

Ambiance - Pretty basic. Normal blue and white Greek colour selections. Waitress lit our table candle during our meal.

Checked out this place on a Sunday night with my girlfriend for the dine out Vancouver event. Great location, friendly service, tasty food and nice martinis. Highly recommended.

Food - Sampled the Tuna appetizer, Rib Eye main, and Lemon Tart dessert. All courses were superbly presented and incredibly tasty. Loved the Java Jive martini too.

Service - Friendly, personable service. I really enjoyed how our table was served by about four different people. Nice!

Ambiance - Absolutely incredible. A nice 50s style place with elegant booths, dim lighting, and classy decor.

Decent All-You-Can-Eat
Submitted Thursday, December 20, 2007 - 11:52pm [Dine in]

I've been to this location several times in the past couple of years. Always fast service, and decent all-you-can-eat for the price.

Food - OK. I really enjoy the Korean BBQ items. Other than that, everything else is pretty average. Sushi is pre-made and quality can vary greatly, depending on the night and chef working.

Service - Always very fast and friendly. Not very personable, but what else can you expect from an all-you-can-east restaurant? Their main goal is to get you fed and get you out.

Ambiance - Absolutely love the BBQ in the middle of the table. Never, ever gets old for me. Decor could use an update.

Recommended. Fast and decent all-you-can-eat for the price.
