Quality Dim Sum!
Submitted Sunday, April 20, 2008 - 10:42pm [Dine in]

We come here for dim sum because of the quality, the service could suck, and there is usually a wait for a table so reservations are highly recommended! Some of my favorites are the lotus leaf wrap sticky rice, beef rice rolls, shrimp dumplings, and the seafood salad pastry, now this one is interesting, it has thin layers of gold leaves on top and shrimp mayo salad. The egg tarts are pretty good too for dessert! Give it a try!

Great Soup Base!
Submitted Sunday, April 20, 2008 - 10:17pm [Dine in]

The thing I love about Ajisen is you're in and out, barely have to wait for a table most of the time. The soup base is really tasty, I love the spicy pork ramen here!! Sprinkle some spicy powder and garlic bits and mix it all together hmMMM yumMMMY!! The appetizers are quite nice too, a few of my favorites are the deep fried chicken and the pan fried gyozas.

Just Average Italian Dinning...Meh!
Submitted Sunday, April 20, 2008 - 10:10pm [Dine in]

To start off the evening, the valet parking service was not pleasant at all, he was kinda rude for what he does. We were greeted at the door right as we walked in, although we had a reservation and a dinner table looked prepared we were asked to wait as they claimed our dinner table was not ready. After 15 minutes, we were seated at our table which was prepared the minute we walked in. Not sure why they made us wait for a table when they had a table for the 12 of us to begin with..We started off with drinks and appetizers. The dishes we got were all disappointing, the tastes of all the dishes we ordered were all off, either way too bland or too salty. With exception of the salmon carparccio, it was done quite nicely, thinly sliced and prepared with a nice light taste. I ordered a rack of veal chop, which was extremely salty! I normally enjoy eating very tasty dishes too but this was way too salty. My 2 girlfriends ordered the grilled salmon and that was fine, the taste was mild and the salmon was juicy and tender. Another ordered pasta and that too was extremely salty, to the point where we had to ask for another order made for her. The food here is average for the price if you ask me and there is no consistency on the taste. Spend your money somewhere else!

Mango Sago!!
Submitted Sunday, March 2, 2008 - 7:56pm [Dine in]

I used to come all the time in the summer for the cold mango sago dessert, they serve it with some ice and fresh mango, as well as the mango mochi which used to be really yuummy back in the summer, but that one is seasonal only. They brought it back one time i came by but it wasn't as close to good, they had substitute the fresh mango with mango mousse. The service and food had gone bad, they make you wait forever just for one order of dessert, and when you ask for water they look at you funny like they want you to order a juice or bubble tea or something. Came here one night and it was smelly and hot like it was an oven in the restaurant. When I still crave for the desserts here I ask for take out.

Quality sashimi, sloppy presentation.
Submitted Sunday, March 2, 2008 - 7:49pm [Dine in]

This place offers very high quality sashimi, I came here for the first time expecting a nice dinner with a hot kitchen as well, but unfortunately they only serve sushi and sashimi and some appetizers like miso soup, and salad. The presentation definitely ruined my dinner, the chef had potential but he just laid all the sushi down on the plate without fixing the ingredients that was falling out, the rice was all over the plate and not rolled tight and he just served it. I guess since he and his wife were the only ones that worked there he had to do everything himself but still presentation matters, you can't just expect people to love your food even if you make it sloppy. The sashimi is very good indeed, but I will never come back, if you don't make reservations don't expect to eat here, walk ins are rarely welcomed since the restaurant is always packed and reservations are normally made at least a day to two in advance.

Poor Service, Average Food
Submitted Sunday, March 2, 2008 - 7:35pm [Dine in]

Hy's needs to work on their service, we were seated for a good 15 minutes, with no one approaching to bring water or bread. We had to wave him down and when he was finally ready he brought bread over, that took about an approx. 25 minutes. The restaurant was busy but they were definitely not under staffed! The bread was the only thing that I liked, fresh and hot, the wine selection was average, the fresh oysters to start was alright, nothing special. The steak finally came after a long wait, the steak tasted average, I thought it was overly salty! I had to wave down my waiter for water several times and still had to wait awhile before I got my water. This place is not worth the money, poor service for average food! The ambiance was extremely loud and the seating was tight, the tables were put very close to each other, to the point where you could join in with your neighbors' conversations!

Okay food, extremely poor service!
Submitted Sunday, February 24, 2008 - 3:29pm [Dine in]

Heard great reviews about this place, so we decided to take my mom here for her birthday. The food was okay, not outstanding at all. Some of the portions like the butternut squash ravioli was ridiculously small, the veal was bland, the fried chicken was okay, the braised beef shortribs was way too saucy and too much flavour, the swordfish was average. The recommended white wine that I had was average, nothing special. So we made reservations for a dinner party of 5 over the phone, they said they only had a 4 person table that could fit 5, I asked if it was enough room?? They said sure no problem at all! I had inform them it was 5 adults, no kids to make sure. We arrived to the restaurant and saw the table, oh my god, it was just perfect for 4 people. how on earth could all 5 of us fit? One of us was literally sitting out of the table, RIDICILOUS! We asked if we could have a chair on the end of the table they refused because they claimed "it would be in their way", so we sat down anyways, moved the table out ourselves, the server made no effort to make us seated more comfortable and we waited to order. About 15 mins went by, we noticed that the couple beside of table was leaving. After they left, we had asked to see if we could combine the table with ours so we could really fit and enjoy our dinner, I looked around and all the people at the door were just being seated where they preferred and the waiter had the nerve to tell us that that particular table was reserved. Even after dinner we still saw that no one really had reservations for that table and there were a few empty tables up front. I am never coming back to this place, not worth the money, poor ambiance, the bathroom is gross, you have to walk through the kitchen where you see all the kitchen staff and where they put food. *Ahem~ NO GOOD!

Glorious Evening at Connor's!!
Submitted Sunday, February 24, 2008 - 3:01pm [Dine in]

I was very excited to come to Connor after all the great reviews. The ambiance was tasteful, we were greeted right away when we entered. Service was incredible! They have great wine selection, our server was extremely knowledgable with everything in the menu and bar, we decided to get the 6 course surprise menu. Connor came to greet us warmly, promising a variety of delicious 2 seafood choice, 2 meat choice and 2 dessert choice. We started off with a complimentary plate of beautifully presented appetizer. We had two starters shortly after we ordered, a cup of cream of cauliflower with olive oil drizzled on top, it was unbelievable creamy! The cold shrimp was light and cooked to perfection! Next came the lobster bisque with calviar, cream cheese and smoked salmon with a very soft smokey presentation upon the lid before lifted. It was the best lobster bisque and smoked salmon I've ever had! The pork belly sausage and scallop was really innovation. Crispy on the outside, juicy and tender in the inside, with a side of rose jam, everything just melted in my mouth! Then came the duck breast, nicely done, very yummy, although the duck skin was a bit too salty. The lamb and aged beef...both were fabolous, loved the sauce and sides, very unique, the texture of the meat was very juicy and both was cooked to perfection. By the time dessert was served I was pretty full and didn't have much room left to eat anymore, to my surprise we had 3 desserts and dessert wine and a box of chocolates (take out). What a glorious dinner at Connors! Very memorable birthday dinner!

Creative and Yummy!
Submitted Sunday, February 3, 2008 - 7:45pm [Dine in]

I was here once and had the Coke Cola marinated kobe beef on their daily special menu, it was a small portion but it was incredible!! It tasted so juicy and tender with a bit of sweet cola taste, just like how it sounds. My absolute favorite is the deep fried inside out sushi rolls they make, its so different eating sushi fried and it was very interesting. The yam fries with 3 different dips is another one of my favorites here. The green tea creme brulee is nicely done with a very creamy matcha taste. Great food and service!

Horrible Service & Rip Off.
Submitted Saturday, February 2, 2008 - 12:35am [Dine in]

Its true this place makes no effort to resolve anything for customers. I agree the food is good but they are also cocky about it, I used to love them for the quality of the sashimi they serve, but after one bad service I got from my server and the restaurant manager, I will never come back to eat here, not to mention their prices are pretty steep for what they serve for casual Japanese dining. I ordered a small unagi sunomono salad which was $7.50, assuming it would come with vermicelli noodles like any sunomono salad, but they filled the entire bowl with cucumbers and topped it with a few pieces of unagi, no vermicelli noodles, so I asked my server about it, she said she will bring a bowl of vermicelli noodles over to make it up but will have to charge me for it, she charged me $3.50 for a SMALL DISH of vermicelli noodles that was barely enough for two bites. I was like what the hell? When I asked for the bill, I told the restaurant manager and he casually said "OH" as if he gave a shit and made no effect to resolve the issue. He did not even apologize and still made me pay a total of $11.00 for a small dish of sunomono salad, ridiculous!! They better figure something out with their customer service! The restaurant furniture & decor inside looks cheap and makes you feel uncomfortable too. This place is a rip off!

I love coming to Blueberry, I would normally get a small cup of half green tea and half vanilla yogurt with 6 toppings; mango, strawberry, papaya, pomegrante, star shaped jellies and chocolate bits. This is so refreshing, healthy and yummy!! Its open late too, weekdays till 11pm, great spot to chill and have a bite!

The Best GuuUUU!!
Submitted Friday, February 1, 2008 - 11:58pm [Dine in]

The best Guu!! I LOVE this location, but its unknown to many because it is not on street level in Gastown, so you don't see the restaurant, you have to go upstairs. I think they are very solid on the quality of their food and service here. They make really good oyster gratin, I always order this when I come, I can never get enough of this dish and the unagi rice gratin is really delicious too, the portion is big, definitely order this one to share! I love the grilled black cod, its done really well and its cooked to perfection everytime. The beef sashimi is one of the best I've ever had! They have innovative drink specials every night, check it out!

Great taste of Japan!
Submitted Friday, February 1, 2008 - 11:48pm [Dine in]

Traditional Japanese Izakaya! Here you will find unique little dishes of wonderful taste of Japan. Love the salmon sashimi, very thinly sliced, with fried garlic! I also absolutely love the baked oysters, it always satisfies my craving, although its small, its soooo yummy with the mayonnaise and corn mixed in, baked to perfection with a crispy coat on the top! The oden is also good, I love just having daikon, an egg and fish cake in it! The ebi mayo is nicely done with dipping mayo on the side, its so good I could eat a whole plate of them! The drinks are very innovative, try something new for a change, the matcha milk vodka is really good! This place is always packed, but the wait for a table is well worth it!

Bad food, overpriced!
Submitted Friday, February 1, 2008 - 11:27pm [Dine in]

We were here for dine out, thought we'd give it. The bread was hard as a rock and cold, the appetizers were ok, we had the French onion soup, but to me it tasted like msg Vietnamese beef noodle soup, it was incredibly salty. The entrees had way too much vegetables!! We ordered the duck breast and pork loin entrees, the duck breast was literally 4 small pieces about the size of a pinky finger that tasted bland, mixed with a HUGE plate of vegetables that was overcooked, the pork loin was dry and bland. The dessert was okay, your average creme brulee and chocolate cake, nothing special. Definitely not worth the money and the food was pretty horrible! They played really junior casual music for a high end priced menu restaurant and the restaurant is small so its also cramped and loud in the there.

Best Dine Out 2008!
Submitted Friday, February 1, 2008 - 11:14pm [Dine in]

Vistas left me such a great impression! I would say this was the best dine out I've had! We entered the restaurant with a warm welcome. We were served with bread and water a few minutes after we were seated. The lobster bisque was the best I've ever had, the lobster meat was fresh and just perfect! The steak was tender and juicy, the mash potato on the side was nicely done with veal mixed in together, everything was nicely presented. The dessert was to die for, I ordered the french toast, it was soft with blueberry syrup and if I didn't stuff myself enjoying the soup and entree I would of finished every bit of that french toast. To top off the dinner, we were offered tea or coffee in the end. Great warm and friendly service! Excellent food!

Gotham's got the best steak!
Submitted Friday, January 4, 2008 - 2:40pm [Dine in]

Going to Gotham for dinner, I know my steak will be cooked to perfection! For appetizers I love the garlic butter shrimp, the shrimp is so sweet and the it tastes so glorious. You have to get 2 sides to go with your entree to fully complete your meal, I normally go with the sauteed mushrooms and baked potato. Gotham has been very solid with their steaks for years, great place for any occassion!

Chilli House Thai Bistro1018 Beach Avenue, Vancouver
Best Thai Food!
Submitted Friday, January 4, 2008 - 2:30pm [Dine in]

Went to Chilli House for a birthday dinner, had the set menu for a party of 8, which included a lettuce wrap with beef, charcoal bbq chicken with chilli sauce ~this chicken was soooooOOO good, the meat was perfectly cooked and the flavour was really rich, you have to try it wit lots of that chilli sauce! A choice of curry with meat in a coconut shell, we ended up witih curry beef, Thai escargots, these are fresh and big escargots not the mini ones you normally eat, if you've never tried it its worth a try. Then we had one of my all time favorites~ fried rice with chicken in a pineapple! There was a salad I forgot to mention earlier, it was light with dressing and came with beef and shrimp on it, very refreshing with a squeeze of lemon juice. The classic pad thai noodle with scrambled eggs and shrimp, peanut bits and bean sprounts, stir fried with chilli paste was another one of my favorites. All this came with a big pot of coconut flavored Jasmine rice. We also ordered a Tilapia stewed in hot and sour soup in the middle of dinner, this soup is amazing! Theres a hint of spices that goes really well with the fish, you add vegetables and vermicelli noodles in the hot soup and mix it, let it cook for a bit and then serve. Another add on to our set menu was the braised lamb, which was very flavorful, thick and buttery. For dessert, we all had the jackfruit with sticky rice and the deep fried banana with coconut ice cream. Chilli house has a nice view along the waters, the music they play is very relaxing, they have a gold Buddhist statue in the front entrance, some palm trees around the front and a fish tank inside as decors. Very nicely done! Great food, highly recommended!

Juicy Pork Dumplings w/ Soup Filling!
Submitted Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - 10:22pm [Dine in]

This place has the juiciest pork dumplings! You eat it with one bite while its semi-hot and the juice will come exploding out, its such a good feeling! The braised tender pork belly is in a bowl of incredibly yummy sauce where you would be very satisfied with a bowl of rice! The daily soup is rich and flavorful, its served in a small pot, good for 2 servings. Must have the duck...the meat is moist and the skin is just crisp! The creamy custard pastry is another one of my favorites for dessert.

Joey's got the best lobster tail!
Submitted Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - 7:33pm [Dine in]

I have always loved Joey for the lobster tail and sirloin steak until they took it off the menu in the Coquitlam location and made it seasonal. I was at the Joey's on Burrard one night and they brought it back to this location! I was really excited, their lobster tail was always fresh, tender and perfectly cooked. The Asian inspired skewer appetizer was absolutely delicious, we chose the beef, chicken and shrimp combination and all of them were cooked to perfection. The calamari portion was enough for 4 to share and very yummy! The butter chicken was creamy and great with rice. The saba grilled fish was very creatively grilled with spices, it was one of the best fish dish I've ever had! Consistent quality and taste, great food, and nice ambiance!

Impeccable Food!
Submitted Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - 2:31pm [Dine in]

Brought my boyfriend here for his birthday, we were very impressed with our perfectly baked bread and sampler appetizers! We had this ball of coconut explosion that had lemon juice that burst out in your mouth! We had the taster menu which was a 6 course meal, with wine pairing. The selected wine was all great, the service was attentive. The food was perfect in every way! I don't even know where to start to describe how wonderful everything tasted! Very detailed to attention presentation and all the selected ingredients was fresh and the sauces were perfect to my taste buds! Last but not least BEST DESSERT EVER!! I had some kind of creamy peanut butter chocolate cake with a piece of super crispy waffle that was on top of the cake, and ice cream on the side that just melted in my mouth! I would definitely recommend Diva for any occasion!!
