What happened to this place?!
Submitted Wednesday, January 28, 2009 - 10:45pm [Dine in]

Wow what a drastic change! I haven't been here for 2 years, I remember this place used to be so good, we ordered a pan fried kimchi udon noodle, the noodles came out warm, not hot, there was no kimchi taste, the noodles were soggy and it was like eating baby food. The baked salmon was bland, nothing special to it, the salmon was overcooked. The chicken karrage was very greasy. Even the oolong tea tasted bad. The only thing that was decent was the amaebi (prawn sashimi) and the pork belly, which was very tasty and very nicely done with the steam bun on the side. We did not even want dessert after all the disappointment even though I always get dessert. Wow, this place definitely went downhill!

Bad service!
Submitted Sunday, January 11, 2009 - 12:59am [Dine in]

We made reservations here, we were running exactly 5 minutes late due to the congested parking entrance with the snow coming down, the restaurant had called and claimed they would give our table away, and when we walked in the restaurant it was pretty much empty!! Food is ok but the female servers here have bad attitudes! We started off with the sauce mix which included soy sauce, garlic bits and satay sauce tasted awful! We ordered the spicy thai hot and sour soup base, but it needs more flavor. The seafood selections were fresh, I had the fish slices and oysters, meat selections which included beef, chicken and pork were all very nicely sliced and fresh, but we found a piece of hair in the plate of chicken and told the server, she did not sincerely apologize but only tried offering a new plate. We wanted more ice for the pop and asked for a full glass of ice when the server returned she slammed that glass on our table. I occasionally crave hot pot and since I haven't had it for a while, we decided to do it up, overall the meal was very unsatisfying and the service made it worst.

Poor managment, bad food.
Submitted Wednesday, December 31, 2008 - 6:26pm [Dine in]

This place is busy because its on Robson, they hire rookie unexperienced servers, most of them don't know what they're doing. You ask for something they forget to come back or ignore you even when its not busy, you have to ask 3 times to get what you want. They try to do the Japanese Fusion style but they are horrible at it. The presentation is sloppy. The deep fried dishes are greasy, the sushi rice is too soggy. The raw oysters are ok. I have been here 4 times since they had their grand opening, only the first time was good. The food is overpriced for the poor quality.

Delicious Lobster Poutine!
Submitted Wednesday, December 31, 2008 - 11:02am [Dine in]

I'm so happy they brought back the lobster poutine, its a bed of fries with lobster meat and creamy cheese melted on top, but this dish is delicious!! As for entrees, the surf and turf was perfectly cooked, the steak was juicy and tender at medium rare, it came with stuffed vegetable ravioli and prawns, they were big and grilled to perfection as well! I really enjoyed the Alaskan sablefish, with a side of lobster baked potato. Very nice dinner and the dessert teaser was unbelievable, the peanut butter bar was really unique and innovative!! The restaurant manager came over to talk to us, she was very nice and friendly, our waiter was attentive and polite. I would definitely come back for more dinners now that I know the lobster poutine is back!

Great meal, exquisite service!
Submitted Monday, December 8, 2008 - 6:01pm [Dine in]

It was a very pleasant dinner, we were greeted with a friendly and warm welcome, our waitress was very polite and experienced. I would definitely come back more often for dinner. I ordered the caesar salad to start, which was delicious, I especially enjoyed the crispy bacon, although the lettuce was too big, I still thought it was one of the best caesar salads I've ever had. I definitely liked the cocktails here, I got a strawberry cocktail drink, which was really yummy, it was served with a slice a sweet strawberry. For entree I had the rib eye steak, it was juciy, tender and flavorful, the only complaint was that it was overcooked. The desserts here are really special, I really enjoyed the dessert platter the kitchen prepared for the birthday girl. (which we shared)

It was solid!
Submitted Friday, November 28, 2008 - 3:58am [Dine in]

The best dishes included the crab salad, which was very well done, it was flavorful and with crunchy bits of deep fried wonton skin i think, mixed with fresh crab meat. I really enjoyed the gomae, gyoza, and the sunshine roll which was imitation crab meat, cucumbers with smoked salmon and slices of mango on top. The deep fried scallop roll is good too! The beef and salmon sashimi was okay. Do not get the yakisoba, it is tasteless and greasy. The deep fried banana with ice cream of choice was decent. Overall I would say it was a good meal!

Solid All You Can Eat Japanese Restaurant.
Submitted Friday, November 21, 2008 - 3:54am [Dine in]

At this all you can eat japanese restaurant you get solid quality sashimi and most important hot food as well as fast service. I was impressed with everything I ate from the ebi sunomono, sushi and cone rolls, bbq beef ribs and salmon belly! The oyster motoyaki is not that great but decent. The sashimi was really good! Surprisingly the dessert was very good, the tapiaoca dessert taste exactly like how a good Chinese Seafood Restaurant would serve it. It is indeed one of the better "All You Can Eat Japanese Restaurants" in Vancouver! The wait for a table during dinner could take a LONG time, so be prepared!

Average Meal at Bombay Bhel
Submitted Friday, November 14, 2008 - 9:31pm [Dine in]

I was really hungry and was craving Indian food and had always wondered how the food at Bombay Bhel was, I've drove by many times but had never checked it out. The beef samosa was ok, I've always loved samosas and have tried many different places and Bombay Bhel makes it just fine. The garlic naan beard was soft and fresh, butter chicken was tender and good, the tandoori chicken was decent. For dessert, the mango cheesecake is really good!

Cannery Seafood House, The2205 Commissioner Street, Vancouver
Best seafood in Vancouver!
Submitted Sunday, November 2, 2008 - 10:04pm [Dine in]

We arrived for our reservation and was promptly seated. Our waiter was very experienced and attentive. They have a great selection of wine at The Cannery! I really enjoyed the bread to start dipped in salmon oil with vinegar, it was delicious!! I didn`t like the appetizers though, the oysters on the shell was not that good, it was fresh but was small, so small you could barely taste the oyster meat, it was such a tease! The lobster bisque was too thick, although the scallop in the center of the bowl was very good. The seafood platter was wonderful, I especially loved the grilled oyster, mussels, and 1.5 lb lobster. They were all cooked to perfection and accompanied by 2 sauces on the side. One of my all time favorites is the smoked cod here, its so delicate and tender, it melts in your mouth! The desserts here are really special, you can`t leave without dessert, I love the macadamia ice cream and the chocolate creme brulee! The Cannery definitely has the best seafood in Vancouver.

Sip~ No wonder its dead here!
Submitted Tuesday, October 14, 2008 - 11:44pm [Dine in]

Considering it was a slow night, you'd figure service would be more prompt and attentive. We walked in and our party had already arrived. We sat down, the waitress did not offer water or drinks menu. I looked over and she actually just walked away, didn't even bother to come over. We had to ask for our own sets of utensils. We had one menu to share between 4 people since the others had ordered already, did she think we would just eat their food? We were the only big party table in the lounge, there was a couple of people grabbing drinks by the bar and one small table of 3 beside us but she seemed like she didn't care, the waitress barely provided any service to our party. The food is just average, there is nothing special to the butter chicken drumstick, there is only a drizzle of sauce on the plate. The steak was overcooked, but overall decent. We asked for a piece of mango cheesecake to be brought out after dinner and had to ask 3 times! For a slow night, they really don't know what they're doing here!

Amazing food and ambiance, feels like you're dining in Japan!
Submitted Thursday, October 9, 2008 - 1:02am [Dine in]

I love Kingyo for their amazing decor, the ambiance in here is great, it makes you feel like you are dining in Japan! There is a bamboo counter table in the middle of the restaurant which I absolutely love. I come to Kingyo because I know my dinner would be great no matter what I eat, everything on the menu is really good! I came in the summer and I had a drink served in a bamboo straw, it was so refreshing! Service is amazing here, all the people that work here makes a great effort to make your evening fabulous. Nice loud greet in Japanese as you enter, you are seated with hot towels and a drink and special tea menu. I love the salmon sashimi here with the special quality soy sauce that accompanies your sashimi. The salmon carpaccio with wasabi mayo and garlic chips is another one of my favs. The soft steamed bun with juicy pork belly inside is incredibly yummy and tender. The ebi mayo is a must have. The crab croquette is very creamy and delicious! The unagi hot stone bowl rice is also really good, its hot enough to cook an egg in there, they mix it for you and wait for the egg to cook and its ready to eat, this dish is very good! The grilled black cod is just perfect! Must try the green tea creme brulee, I never leave without this one!

Disgrace to Japanese food!
Submitted Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 11:38pm [Dine in]

HORRIBLE SERVICE! DISGUSTING JAPANESE FOOD! I've never had sashimi so weak before. It was clearly unfresh, I had one piece and it was soggy and warm. The ebi sunomo is not edible, its just tasteless shrimp in water with a very bad vinegar smell but tastes nothing like vinegar. The scallop with tobiko sushi has more mayo that scallop. GROSS! Do not waste your time and money here! The waitress here does not know what shes doing, she just brings the food and puts it out on your table and when there is a problem with the food she does not remove it from your table even when asked. We asked for no wasabi in the sushi and they piled it on. When I had asked for something to be done she said no and walked away. The fried oyster is really a baked oyster and had mud like substance in it! I couldn't eat after the first 3 plates came out, it was to the point where I would get sick even just having another bite. I was so disturbed by the waitress and her attitude I needed to get out asap and didn't even touch the rest of the food, trust me its bad food and service here!

Meh...
Submitted Monday, September 8, 2008 - 4:54pm [Dine in]

The gyozas here are okay, nothing special for the name of the restaurant. I‘ve been here 4 times in the last 2 years just to see if anything has changed. Nope. Same old. Its great because they are open late and we normally don‘t need to wait in line after 10pm compared to other Japanese Izakaya restaurants and other ramen houses. Service is okay here. The oden here is not that good, the soup is kinda bland. Sashimi is fresh. This place is just okay.

This place went downhill!
Submitted Monday, September 8, 2008 - 4:43pm [Dine in]

This cactus club used to be my favorite restaurant, the food was good, service was pleasant...not sure what happened. We were briefly greeted with an effortless hello when we arrived. Then the hostess went back to chatting with her colleagues. We had a party waiting for us so I called to find our friends. The minute we sat down the server asked if we were ready to order. I had just sat down and haven ‘t even picked up the menu yet! How the heck am I suppose to know what I want to order? We ordered a Caesar Salad, the dressing was bland and the salad was overall dry. Messing up on a caesar salad, I thought that was just impossible for Cactus Club, since its just romaine and dressing. The butternut squash raviolli was okay, nothing special. The yam fries were really greasy, seems like they haven ‘t changed the oil that they use for a long time! There was a dish missing, so we waited and asked the server when it was coming, she said it was coming in a rude manner and never came back to check up on us. By the time everyone had finished their appys, I decided it was time to ask again, she did not apologize and just said its coming again. She then brought out the chicken tenders for the person that was sitting there the whole evening, the chicken tenders were burnt and over cooked and dry. HORRIBLE!

Great Steak!
Submitted Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 9:41pm [Dine in]

Pinky's is the new hotspot for great steak thats grilled to perfection. As you enter you are greeted right away by a very nice and friendly hostess. The service here is very good! I ordered a medium rare and it came out exactly how I imagined. You get onion rings with your steak which is a nice touch to the dinner. They have very experienced and charming servers here who are attentive, great music and ambiance! The value is outstanding for the quality of food! Great wine list! The bread is fresh and baked very nicely. I had a very pleasant dinner at here and I would highly recommend Pinky's for any occasion!!

Hidden Gem on Commercial Dr!!
Submitted Thursday, July 3, 2008 - 2:40am [Dine in]

We called one night for a table 15 minutes prior to going to Lime after finding out about the restaurant. We were told 2 seats by the sushi bar would be reserved just for us. We walked in and were seated after a few minutes, they have very innovative drinks here, we ordered a beef sashimi, it was the best tasting beef sashimi ever! So juicy and tender, it was also beautifully presented in a rose shape form. Next came the salmon sashimi, it was great quality sashimi and very fresh!! The prawn tempura was lightly battered and was very crunchy, it was cooked to perfection! We also ordered the spicy tuna roll, the tuna piece on top of the roll just melts in your mouth and it had the perfect blend of chilli spice in it. We also had the ebi chili which was good but I thought it was too simple, it was light crispy deep fried prawns with eggplants, broccoli and zucchini. We also had the chilled duck breast which was very good! We enjoyed all this as we watched the sushi chefs prepare dishes after dishes by the bar, I was already craving to order more! Great desserts too! I ordered the chocolate cheese cake which was a matcha sponge cake with chocolate, this one is a must try! Sooooo YUMMMY! This place has a great ambiance, live bands playing every night while you dine. Great hidden gem on Commercial Drive!! MUST TRY!

Great Ramen!
Submitted Wednesday, June 25, 2008 - 9:18pm [Dine in]

Compared to other Japanese ramen restaurants, this place gives you a great selection and quality ingredients! I like the gyozas here, its a good bite size and a great appetizer to start off with. The soup base is very good, you don't taste grease at all unlike other ramen restaurants. The ramen noodles are cooked to perfection with sides on top. I would highly recommend Motomachi! Its a small place but great place to hang out!

Nothing Special.
Submitted Wednesday, June 25, 2008 - 9:09pm [Dine in]

Goldfish has a great ambiance, the staffs are all friendly and very experienced but unfortunately the food here sucks. The sugar cane skewered prawn sounded interesting but it theres nothing special to it. The halibut was very dry and poorly cooked in bland soup base. The steak was average. I think for the price and location they must improve on the taste and quality of their food! For dessert we had the house special which was cream puffs with chocolate drizzle, MEH~ again nothing special!

Another Great All You Can Eat Japanese Restaurant!
Submitted Saturday, June 21, 2008 - 5:26pm [Dine in]

This restaurant in terms of what they offer has better QUALITY than other all you can eat japanese restaurants out there. I enjoyed my dinner here last week, the selection for the price was well worth the money, the raw oysters were fresh and bigger, the sockeye salmon was quality sashimi and was great, oyster motoyaki taste perfect, tempura was just done right, not to heavily battered, the sushi rolls were nicely presented and was really yummy!! Service was pleasant! I would definitely recommend Shota for all you can eat Japanese!
