Kintaro Ramen788 Denman Street, Vancouver
Appealing food, unappealing location
Submitted Monday, November 16, 2015 - 4:52pm [Dine in]

Kintaro is one of those places that are too good, but scare people away because of their claustrophobicly small location and long lineups outisde. It is rare to walk past by it an not see crowds of people lined up. I don't know if it is on purpose, but going in groups is the last thing you want to do there. Get your food, and get out.

Don't mean to be cynical, but part of the meal is how much you enjoy it. The noodles are excellent, one of the best I've had from all the places I have tried in Vancouver (miso, spicy garlic ramen), but I just wish I wasn't so rushed all the time.

Create your own pasta?
Submitted Monday, November 16, 2015 - 4:40pm [Dine in]

Cheap and pasta is not really my thing, but I had to make an exception for Basil. I had heard great things about it so, without a better place or thing to do, we came here on Saturday night for dinner. We had been here in the past and wanted to try out the create your own. Essentially, you get to choose your own pasta, veggies, sauce and extras. There is a lot to choose from and the restaurant has paid extra concern for healthy aka vegetarian, organic ingredients. The ratios are good for the quantity and price - yes, you might not be getting authentic Italian pasta, but the taste is still very good.

First impressions date night
Submitted Monday, November 16, 2015 - 1:05am [Dine in]

I seriously don’t know what the hype is about this place, I have ordered before and didn't find the food so wow. So when by boyfriend and I had to change our plans and he suggested this place as the next best (and closest alternative) I wasn't particularly jumping up and down.

There was a 30 min wait minimum which further discouraged me, but seeing the food being served at the patio and the smells entering my famished system, I slowly started developing a liking (or a softer heart at least). One of the staff members started talking to us, and led us to the bar to make the waiting a little better.

After a couple of drinks, we finally got our coveted seat. Appies flew by, and on we were for the food. It was mattar paneer and chicken coconut with some naan to pair it with. The coconut was a suggestion from our waiter, and had this creamy texture that was very enticing. The meal didn't come out too bad for two, and we're thinking about coming back to try the buffet. Let's see how it goes!

Groupon 9 course meal hit!
Submitted Monday, February 16, 2015 - 11:20pm [Dine in]

I had a Groupon coupon for the 9 course meal and decided to give it a try just because one night. I was a little adamant at first because I thought that the food would not be so good but the experience was quite the opposite. Oh and I am not going to lie, the location in the dungeon on West 4th did not give me a very good feeling. Thankfully I got the courage and went! First of all, this is one of the higher end Malay places in town, and has quickly displaced others I held in high regard. The smell as soon as you arrive is enticing and rich. The ambience is nice and cozy and the place itself can be quite easy to miss. Prices are justified with the huge sized portions they serve here. Mango salad stood out as well as the roti canai.

Wonderful surprise for BFs 30th birthday
Submitted Sunday, February 15, 2015 - 7:23pm [Dine in]

I organized a dinner for my boyfriends 30th birthday at Handis. I had been planning this one for a long time at another famous restaurant but then last minute changes happened and Handi was picked. My boyfriend loves Indian food so I thought it would be a good choice. Although we were not a very large party (of eight) I was still very nervous about how everything was going to turn out. Let's just say I am usually never the one who organizes things. Luckily, I informed the staff of this and they were very supportive and helpful in making sure everything would go by smoothly. Service didn't fail even once! We were a kind of loud and picky group but still the staff managed to make everyone was okay. Oh and the food was yummy and delish, esp the chicken vindaloo and samosas. Thanks guys!

Clean and quick if you dine-in
Submitted Sunday, February 1, 2015 - 6:23pm [Dine in]

Discovered this little gem while strolling around Robson one day. Although it seems very hole-in-the-wall kind of place, it is incredibly clean and organized inside. It's friendly service and great value has made it one of my favourite Chinese places in town. My favourite dishes have to be the orange peel chicken and lemon chicken. Service is very different when you order from when you eat in. Ordering is more of a hit and miss, and can be slow, so I tend to come in here. Food comes incredibly fast otherwise.

Finally a good Greek option
Submitted Thursday, January 1, 2015 - 6:34pm [Dine in]

One of my friends wanted greek food so we headed for Apollonia. Well, what can I say, it was well worth the visit! It’s clean, quiet and cozy, and we were seated right away. The chef’s platter is great for sharing, as the portions are generous. I especially enjoyed the chicken souvlaki. I was pleasantly surprised by the baclava, it was not overly sweet. Both the menu and wine list are extensive enough to merit a second visit. They also have delivery, in case you feel like eating at home or anyplace else.

Sweets galore
Submitted Thursday, January 1, 2015 - 6:22pm [Dine in]

The cakes are Afterthoughts are very yummy. My favourite to get from here whenever I go is the cheesecake. But besides that, they also serve quiches, muffins, among other delights. It would be a nice place to hang out and have coffee, very inviting and enticing. However, the prices are a bit too high. Portions could be a bit smaller as well.

Great Chinese food in variety for all
Submitted Thursday, January 1, 2015 - 6:09pm [Dine in]

Affordable and yummy Chinese food, I am surprised this place has no other reviews. I usually order take-out from them, as their service is always prompt and fast and haven't had any "accidents" or mix ups with them unlike in other places. Bamboo has an ample variety of food, from appies, noodles, fried rice, pork, chicken to seafood. Literally I believe they invested in the belief that there is something for everyone. In my opinion, the chow mein, egg rolls, and lettuce wraps are the best. The servers are nice and the place is clean.

Ricardo's Pizza32750 George Ferguson Way, #6, Abbotsford
The one and only
Submitted Wednesday, December 31, 2014 - 12:58am [Take-out]

Ricardo's pizza is the only place I go to for pizza in Abbotsford. I have tried this one and over the years had a taste of many others but I got to say this one still beats the rest by a lot. The ingredients and toppings make the pizza. The fact that it is made all fresh also makes it so much better. Can't do without a bacon cheese burger or Perogie. Prices are not low but I can compromise for the quality.

Paliotti's Italian Restaurant33886 Essendene, Abbotsford
Still among the top for Abbotsford
Submitted Wednesday, December 31, 2014 - 12:48am [Dine in]

It's been a while since I visited Paliotti's, but I recently came back here for dinner and it was just as good as last. It is probably one of the best Italian places here, if not the best. Love the atmosphere here. Being from Vancouver, my standards for food are a little higher than usual, but this one never fails to disappoint. You can make your own pasta but the number of options can be a overwhelming, so I usually opt for Tortellini Rossi or a Gnocchi. The pizzas are different from anywhere else and the Focaccia is always good (of course). Food is fresh and made in-house. Prices are fair. The service could use a little improvement, as it can be a little slow though. Minus one star for that!
