Metrotown Polish Deli5068 Kingsway, Burnaby
More than good enough for an Alberta boy
Submitted Monday, January 18, 2010 - 8:15pm [Dine in]

As a kid I grew up in Alberta and ate lots of Eastern European food. Polish food might be a bit more rare here, but man this place is still giving you the best. I ordered a dozen perogies and a plater of cabage rolls (which were huge). It was about $12 and absolutely terrific value. My wife and I ate it all, but it was really enough for 3, and when you break down the price, that's cheaper than fast food. No matter the price, the food is great and I'm tempted to say those were the best cabbage rolls I've ever had.
I took home a loaf of break which is nice and I see they have a lot of tasty deserts as well. As far as the rating, this is not a place you'd want to sit and eat so I lied on ambiance. But really, this is a deli and the rating should'nt take a hit for that.
Anyway, if you're craving some eastern European food or simply don't want to cook but have a nice meal - pick up some food here.

Great place and value
Submitted Sunday, October 25, 2009 - 5:34pm [Dine in]

First time going to this place last night. Actually, I tried to go a couple weeks ago but it was only open for a dinner party. I did, however, see the menu and the prices were noticable cheaper than others in the area which piqued my interest.

The ambiance is quite good, and better than most of the other Italian restaurants in this area. It's buidling seems that it was actually built to be an Italian restaurant as it feels like a rustic house. The decor won't floor you, but it's certainly nice.

The serive was good, especially when it mattered. We were seated promptly, our drink request, food order and bread were all done quite quickly. I did notice that we were only asked how things were as we were eating once, but it did get busy - so they weren't lazy, and they were timely when it most mattered.

The value is VERY good. I am tempted to put 5, but won't go overboard. All the pasta dishes are right around $13 and the entrees at around $15-19, which prices it quite lower than many others in the area. The soups were a very low price and the appetizers were all under $10. I was curious about this to see if the food was a bit of a drop as well, considering that's barely more than White Spot, but...

The food was great. They brought out delicious bread, and the 1/2 litre of wine was very good (and only $12). I forget the plates' names, but mine was a penne in a tomato pesto with Italian sausage, bacon and onions. It was terrific, and only $13. The sauce was delicious, the pasta was fresh and firm and the meat was great quality. My wife had an even better plate and ordered chicken breast stuffed with prosciutto and mozzerella over a cream sauce. It normally includes veggies and potatos, but she opted for pasta and rose sauce instead. This was only $16 I think and was wonderful. We were too full (good portions) for desert, but will try next time.

I give a full recommendation to La Villetta. There may be slightly higher end places, but for this range, it's the best I've seen. Actually, it's better than many other Italian restaurants that charge 10-20% more than this place. Try it for yourself!

Pretty nice

I went here a couple weeks ago and had a pretty good meal. The pastas are all around $15, and for what you pay, you get a pretty good quality meal. The pasta seemed like it was made fresh, the sauce tasted of natural good quality ingrediants.
A great waiter and pretty decent house wine, and overall my wife and I were quite satisfied. It's not an outstanding restaurant, but a good one and will probably go back to sometime. I don't think you'll do too much better for this price range.

Don't be fooled
Submitted Thursday, October 15, 2009 - 12:11am [Dine in]

I sent a review for this place months ago, but feel I need to adjust it as it is way higher than my real experience.

Long story short, if volume is more important than quality for you - Anton's is your place (and if you prefer American style pasta to Italian). But really, you're not getting good quality pasta dishes . They simply dump in a whole load (not exagerating)of lower quality pasta, barely average sauce, but no more meat than you would get anywhere else (so it's really imbalanced).

Hey, this formula is making the owners rich - but is that the basis for good food? Avoid the temptation to eat your weight in food, and go somewhere down the street where you'll still be full and even savour the food you're eating.

Like others have said, totally a nondescript place and have walked by it countless times without noticing it. Just tried it yesterday based on the good reviews from this site.

A precursor to all my reviews: I rate everything to scale based on the price and scope of a restaurant. So I don't compare apples to oranges so to speak.

Food (the most important): Exceeded my expectations even having read good reviews already. I ordered the Beef Doner plate, which came with seasoned rice toped with a tomato sauce, very fresh Greek salad with very nice feta and whole olives, seasoned potato, a buttered and grilled pita slice and I chose homous instead of Tsaziki (no extra charge). The easiest way to say it was that all parts of the dish were perfect and the doner meat was very fresh, not dry at all and tasky. Good portions too.

Service: Well it's not a proper restaurant, so the fact that they were nice, prompt, made everything fresh and brought it out to me is all that I would expect from a place like this. Plus, they aren't asking for a tip on the debit machine (because it's over the counter service).

Value: it may seem that I'm over-rating this place, but for only spending $2 more than MacDonald's, this place deserves a 5. Plus, their food is better than many Greek/Mediterranean restaurants who will charge at least $5 more for the same thing.

Ambiance: Okay, not much there, but what do you expect from a place like this? Plus, it is kept clean and they have a few pics of Greece on the wall.

From my experience, this place is unrivaled for an under $10 meal. Bear in mind this is not trying to compete with a proper Greek restaurant on W. Broaday, so please don't compare them by the same standard. But if you want a great inexpensive eat, I can't see anyone being disappointed.

Best Falafel2013 Commercial Drive, Vancouver
No complaints
Submitted Wednesday, February 18, 2009 - 8:33am [Dine in]

First of all, I review based on a scale of what the price is and the scope of the restaurant. So in this case, you're paying only about $2 more bucks than you would going to fast food. With that it mind, this place offers great food for this type of price range and is one of my best options. Fine, the bread is just store bought and nothing special as other reviewers said. But when I order the shwarma plate, everything else is homemade, tasty and very well done. Moreover, the portions are huge and I like how well seasoned the chicken was, along with all the sauces offered.
Sure it may not actually be the "best falafel", and I may not go here for an anniversary dinner. But if you're looking for an inexpensive, but tasty lunch - option you'll have found a good place here.

Wonderful Turkish experience
Submitted Wednesday, February 18, 2009 - 8:17am [Dine in]

I've always enjoyed Middle-eastern/mediterranean food, but it is hard to find a proper restaurant of this kind (there are lots of eateries, but not really a restaurant setting). Anyway, just happened to drive by it and thought I'd give it a try. Apparently, they've just expanded the size of the restaurant and their menu - there is is a whole lot to choose from. I noticed in the front that they have an actual fire roasted oven, so that was a good sign for good food.

I ordered a type of beef kabob - I forget the name, but it was a type of ground veal. That may not sound exciting, but it was wonderfully seasoned and really was the best i've ever had of this type. It came with they typical mediterranean sides of lettuce, cabbage, roasted tomato, flat bread, rice and a yogurt (Tsazki like). Again, may not sound extraordinary, but all were very tasty.

My wife ordered more of a uniquely Turkish item which was the chicken Guvech. It is hard to describe, but is a lot of mediteranean vegetables, chicken, tomato sauce, seasonings in a roasting dish with cheese melted on top. She loved it and found it extremely tasty and well seasoned - and had enough for a full portion leftover. It was also served with a massave flat bread, which is hard to describe, but came right out of their oven. It also came with the yogurt sauce. We ordered their hummus which was perfect and great to have with all bread we had.

As for the other details, food is absolutely #1 for me, but the service and ambience were great and the value was terrific as it was less than $15 per person.

I'd have no reservations in recommending this place. The food is very unique but also accessible for anyone as the ingredients are universal and wonderfully prepared.

nice...but not great
Submitted Wednesday, November 12, 2008 - 8:56pm [Dine in]

My favorite inexpensive breakfast place (Hot Plate Bistro) wasn't open the other day so thought I would check this out. From the reveiews and line up to get in, I had pretty high expectations. I had French toast, americano and sausage and my wife had a mexican omlette. Long story short, all of it was pretty good, but nothing really stood out. Also, the omlette was good, but only after removing the 1/2 pound of onion that was put into it.

Overall, good food for a good value - but nothing that will stick in your memory. I wouldn't mind trying the lunch items if I'm in the area though.

I just went to this place yesterday and had one of the best Thai meals ever. The food we ordered was perfect and everything being served around us looked very appetizing as well. The place is busy, but they have a lot of staff, so they seemed just as interested as we were in ordering, getting our food asap and presenting the bill when we were ready. I would recommend this place without reservation and my only regret is I'm not around this area for lunch time as their specials seemed to be a very good value.

Best burger that comes to mind
Submitted Thursday, September 25, 2008 - 5:48pm [Dine in]

Do not pay attention to any of the average reviews because you will find one of the best burgers you've had if you come here. Sure the ambiance and service are functional, but this is a place to come if you want a helluva burger. You can tell the beef grade is top notch and my wife loves the chicken burger. Add to the fact of having a huge choice of very high quality (and unique) toppings and you can't complain. Love it.

This place is pretty much good on every level, but nothing that will really stick in your memory after you're done. If you're with a group of people and can't agree on a choice of food, this place is pretty good as they have a lot of variety. You can see the potential for this place to be better by doing a bit of extra touches with the food; but as it stands, its just okay.

Akari Japanese Restaurant7261 120 Street, Delta
Best Japanese you'll find in the area
Submitted Saturday, August 9, 2008 - 10:51pm [Dine in]

I actually just moved near Metrotown which has a plethera of Japanese/sushi restaurants, and I can still say that by any standard, Akari offers some very good food - especially the sushi. I rated the service 3 because it really depends on the server you get on that particular night. Great atmosphere and the value isn't bad as some reviews say because the quality is far greater than any other Japanese restaurant for miles around (just like you shouldn't rate the value of a fast food burger next to one you'd get at Milestone's or Earls'). Ultimately food is the most important, I'd give the sushi a 5 and the rest 3-4.

Glad I found this!

I think there is a true void is finding a good place for breakfast; especially if you want something inexpensive but also want to avoid an early heart attack. Fortunately, I found this bistro today and will certainly be returning. There isn't a huge selection, and the food won't necessarily knock you off your feet; but it is very tasty and extremely good value. From looking into the kitchen (and later eating), they use very good ingredients and the food is prepared and presented very well. Also friendly atmosphere and the Americano I had is one of the best out there. I look forward to trying their lunch items as well. My only hesitation in recommending this place is if it gets too popular because it cannot seat more than 10 (it is a bistro). But feel to check it out any other time I won't be there :)

What can I say about my favorite restaurant? Malaysian food is truly one of the greatest in the world as it draws from the cuisines of India, China and indigenous (Malaysia of course). What results is a taste which I cannot put words to, but the Banana Leaf sure delivers with excellence. Every time I have visited, it is an experience to be remembered and have no reservations in inviting first timmers. Check it out!

Nando's is a great place if you want something you know you'll enjoy and won't feel too guilty about it either. I've rated it according to its price range (approx $10 pp), and for that, it's one of the best choices out there. Enjoyable spicy chicken (flame grilled), tasty sides and even reasonably priced beer. Plus, this is food that someone from virtually any culture can enjoy. Note: the take out never tastes quite as good.
