Deal Breaker
Submitted Saturday, December 20, 2008 - 2:22pm [Dine in]

This restaurant used to be almost perfect. great food, great prices, and they even delivered! New staff stepped in, and perfection turned to chaos. I think my biggest beef is with the middle aged woman who now answers the phone, takes the money, etc.
Problem 1- When they stopped delivering, I made 'to go' orders. It became a joke in our family, how many mistakes this middle aged woman would make. You order spicy tuna sashimi, you got a spicy tuna cone. You order prawn tempura, you got veggie tempura. And on and on and on. I have seen the cook yell at her, so she must be wasting a huge amount of food. I don't expect her to speak English well, but knowing what the menu sounds like spoken in English would help. She also does not want to give you a receipt, which I think is a little strange. Considering all her mistakes, I like to know if I have paid for the higher cost mistake.
Problem 2- The deal breaker- Last time I went for pick up, this same middle aged woman was helping the cook make rolls (squish the rice onto the nori) and then, she took my order, handled my money, and then went right back to making rolls, all without washing her hands. All I could think of was- thank God I didn't order a roll. Unbelieveably gross!

Great Place
Submitted Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 6:46pm [Dine in]

On the window it says Home Cook'n, and that is exactly what you get, only better. Menu is simple and classic diner-like. Sandwiches taste healthy and fresh, great soups that remind me of my Grandma's, great daily specials, and great coffee. Service wise its very diner-like, complete with plenty-o "Honey's". Atmosphere is cool, lots of booths and pictures of ships/docks.
Loved it, and I'll be back soon!

What have you done with the Tuna Melt???
Submitted Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 6:35pm [Dine in]

As the reviewer before me, I LOVED the tuna melt. Love it enough to spend time trying to figure out what they put in it that made it sooo delicious. Tuna crack I used to call it.
Now, months later, new owners and the tuna melt is no longer good, no longer good at all. I loved it so much that I have tried and retried to order it in vain hope that it would improve. One time it was soggy and wet, another time I swear they put processed cheese on it (ewww, they are supposed to be a health restaurant!) and overall it is missing that thing that made it sooo damn good. Sigh

Good Food But Very Loud
Submitted Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 6:22pm [Dine in]

I've been to the Charlatan several times and it is overall a great place to hang out. The waiters are friendly and professional, however the amount of time it takes the food to hit the table can be unacceptibly long. One time it took 45 minutes for lunch to arrive, and my friend and I were the only people in the restaurant.
Generally I like the menu, not too expensive and a good variety. The best item for dinner, I'm convinced is the meatloaf, sooo good! Its got spinach and bacon in it and is served with mash and gravy, very comfort, very filling, for $12! Drinks are good, and are reasonably priced.
The only think I do not like about this restaurant, is it can be quite dark at night and extremely loud. If you sit at a table with 4 people, you won't hear anything half of them will say. I guess that's because of the 'pub-ish' atmosphere, but still, its head-ache inducing.
