A waste of an evening
Submitted Saturday, February 28, 2009 - 6:10pm [Dine in]

When you pay nearly $30 for risotto, it had better be good. Unfortunately, what arrived was a limp, bland dish of watered down rice, tasteless king crab, and hard, dried peas. The portion was small, but given the monotony of each bite, I gave up on the meal.

Service was friendly, but the servers were not using common sense: we ordered bread, but were not presented with bread plates until we asked. The bread was drizzled in olive oil, but a side of balsamic (which would be an obvious accompaniment in an Italian restaurant) did not arrive until we asked.

Gratuity (18%) was inserted into the bill, rather than left to us to decide. That was the ultimate insult given the mediocre service.

What's all the fuss with this place?
Submitted Monday, January 26, 2009 - 1:13pm [Dine in]

I don't understand why this place is loved. Service is as rude and abrupt as the Elbow Room, only you expect it to be so at the Elbow Room. I watched one customer walk out after being treated rudely by the waitress. I could hear other customers complain about the waitress's sarcasm.

The pancakes in my breakfast were dry and nearly charred. The sausage was bland. Bacon, however, was excellent and crispy.

There isn't enough going on at Helen's for me to recommend it.

A disappointment
Submitted Monday, January 26, 2009 - 1:06pm [Dine in]

This was the only time I've been to Le Gavroche, and it will be my last. They screwed up the reservation even thought I had called to confirm it the day before. The food was not memorable, and the halibut was overcooked. Dessert (apple strudel) was unremarkable. I would have given this restaurant a second chance if the service were remarkable, but the evening failed on all accounts. My friends and I were treated as though we ought to be grateful to have dinner there.
