Awesome service matched with reliable food
Submitted Wednesday, June 10, 2009 - 6:58pm [Dine in]

My bf and I came here for snack last night after reading the review that they have awesome onion soup. So, we arrived at 11:30, unfortunately it's exactly the time that the kitchen closes. Our server however still have us seated and didn't show any kind of push and were very kind to us. We only ordered 3 dishes: onion soup, beef tartare, and poutine, as we just finished dinner less than an hour earlier. The onion soup was very thick and full flavoured, fully packed with braised onions, 2 slices of baguette, and with a generous amount of cheese to cover the whole soup. It was served oven hot and I just love it, my bf however thought that there wasn't enough soup to it, as too much onion. The Beef tartare was pretty good, it was served with 2 long slices of crispy oven dried baguetts. The tartare was mixed with a little horseradish, onion and mayo, and it totally covers the gaminess of raw beef, which was great. The poutine however, was not my favourite, although we both can definitely taste and smell the truffle oil on the fries. The cheese was not enough and it was only 2 or 3 pieces of chewy melted cheese on top of the poutine, nothing incorporated inside. The gravy was also very little compared to other poutines I had b4. In general, I believe that the food was pretty good and we would definitely come back again sometime next week to try the suckling pig, which I heard to b good.
For drinks we ordered imported beer since they hv a long list of imported beer selection at low prices.
The ambiance was very warm, having half of the restaurant seatings at the kitchen bar, which is where we ask to b seated. The chef (we only chatted with the asian chef) was very kind and interactive and that's part of the reason I give service as a 5.

Alright for banquet dinner menu
Submitted Sunday, June 7, 2009 - 9:26pm [Dine in]

I attended my friend's wedding party yesterday at 7 pm and she told me that she ordered the $589 menu for a table of ten (the 2nd choice for the wedding menu). The appetizer of sucking pork n some appetizer platter was alright. Next, we had the crab claw and it was just average. Next we had the braised abalone with some pea shoots, the abalone was only 1 piece and it was very thinly sliced and the pea shoots were a bit old so it was not tender. Next, we had the shark fin thick soup and it was pretty good, considering the abundance portion of the fish maw and shark fin. Next we had lobster, it was cut into 1" to 2" sizes, it's not bad. By this time I was already full and though we were served roast chicken, fried rice, and braised yee noodle, I didn't taste it. Service was prompt regardless of the busy place but no sense of kindliness whatsoever. I wasn't impressed at all with the dinner menu for wedding banquet but I might try their food again in the future but of course still not expect so much from it.

Great bbt place in Rmd
Submitted Saturday, June 6, 2009 - 2:52am [Dine in]

I came here tonight for a light dinner with 2 gfs of mine and the place was packed when we arrived at 7:30 pm. I wasn't hungry at the time so I ordered spicy wonton and it was pretty good, not too oily (usually it's soaked in chilli oil, in this place it's soaked in spicy soy sauce w little chilli oil), the wonton wrapping was very smooth and soft but the meat was a bit bland (no other ingredients put in, only minced pork). My gf ordered a taiwanese style toast which looked very normal to me and another gf ordered chicken w rice and it tasted a little too sweet to me. My drink was matcha milk tea and it was pretty good, not too sweet. The service was prompt and brought the food within 15 mins though there was no smile or kindliness shown in their faces. The price of the food was also comparable to other bbt places around so it's alright. I will definitely come back again and try on other food choices.

I came here with 2 other friends of mine for lunch last week and the place was very crowded. People were packed at the entrance to wait for tables. Anyways, I had a chicken laksa noodle bowl and it was alright, pretty good for a HK style cafe. My friend's seafood laksa looked pretty good (I guess it's just like mine). Another friend of mine had some grilled meat with vegg and she had no complaints on it though I didn't ask her on how it was. Overall, I will still come back here whenever my friends wanna go over there or if i'm in the area.

Awesome late night cake place in Richmond
Submitted Wednesday, June 3, 2009 - 3:14am [Dine in]

I've been craving cheesecakes for the past week or so and finally tonight my gf and I went to Yavis. It's the first time for me to come here but I've heard of it for months already from another gf of mine who is a regular customer. I was very full when I arrived tonight so the 2 of us only went for 2 cheesecakes instead of our usual tasting of 3 or 4 cheesecakes. We had the glacier sesame which was frozen hard but taste wise was pretty good, seems like they used cream cheese with a touch of sour (not lemon) in it. The other cheesecake we had was a regular smooth and baked mango cheesecake that was pretty tasty but I think it lacked some lemon juice. Or could b just me that's craving for sour taste tonight.
For value, it was very reasonable esp. when we have the combo of drink and cheesecake. In total for 2 drinks and 2 cheesecakes we paid $20 including 15% tips. So, it was very reasonable esp when the service was pretty good, the server was attentive though he doesn't really know the flavours of the cheesecakes.
Ambiance is also very good for a chinese dessert place in Richmond.
Since they close late every night except monday (they close every mondays) , I think I'll become a regular. I would also recommend anyone who loves to hv a little dessert in Rmd to visit it.

I came here last night for a late night snack with my bf after hearing so many + comments from my friends. We arrived at 11:20 and we were gladly surprised that they still allowed us in considering that they close at 11:30. There was another table in the house and we were the 2nd table. Soon after we were seated we were given wet towels and ask for our orders. We ordered 5 mins after that and since we weren't hungry at all, we just ordered 4 dishes. Jap scallop sashimi was super fresh and very sweet, very different from the other sashimi carpaccios in town. Their amaebi (sweet prawn) were a bargain, only $8 for about 6 to 8 pieces and of course it was very good. The nice touch to the sashimi was that they use freshly grated wasabi which is very tasty and proves that they're higher end than other sushi bars. We also ordered the (marinated?) beef tongue that we have to cook ourselves on the hot stone which was very interesting, we had fun cooking. We weren't so adventurous in the drinking part cuz I already had a few glasses of shiraz b4 I came here, so we just ordered the large house sake. We'll try the martinis next time.
The service was amazing. Servers were attentive, polite, and they smile. :) So, i'll definitely come back again.

My bf and I came here for a late night snack at midnight yesterday. We ordered a beef and egg rice in a pot and it came in quite a big portion especially for only $6.50. We also ordered soy sauce spinach and beef but the beef was a little hard. Their braised pork intestine was a little bland in flavour and very fatty. I'm not sure of the name of this dish but it's crunchy beef throat with onion was special especially I've never tried crunchy beef throat before. We also ordered salty shredded chicken which was a little salty for me but perfect for my bf. For me, this visit isn't as good as last month but for my bf he thinks it's just as good.

I always come here to buy their cakes and their petite fours. One of my favourite individual sized cakes would be the cheese tarts and the Japanese cheese spongy cake in a long rectangle shape (I forgot the name but it's usually in the showcase beside the cheese tarts). The cheese tart has a very smooth filling but the cookie base is just alright for me. As for the Jap cheese sponge, it's very moist and savoury, I could eat 2 of them at once, it's just great. Another thing that I love is their King's sponge cake that's wrapped in a wax paper and inside an individual plastic wrap. That sponge cake is very moist and buttery, simply awesome. The price for this sponge cake is maybe 10 or 20 cents more than La Patisserie but the taste is addictive and way worth the price difference. I also order their birthday cakes, their designs are amazing, you can actually look at their albums and choose from there or u can just show them a picture and ask them to do the cake just like the object in ur picture, of course with a little more money. But hey, it's for a b'day, I'd do anything to make my mom or bf happy. I bought a 6" birthday cake for I think a little less than $20, which was very reasonable. I always come here so I'll come back again sometime next week.

I came here to buy some dessert with my gf today. I bought 2 cakes for my late night snack there. One was the cherry liquor creme brulee and another was a chocolate cake that was wrapped in a layer of white chocolate. The creme brulee was not bad, the sugar caramel was still a little crunchy when i ate at night, though some of it melted away already. The consistency of the creme was a bit too thick I think but flavor wise, it was tasty, especially with the kirch cherry. The other cake that I had was omigod, super sweet, to the point that my bf who has a pretty high tolerance of sugar stopped eating it. Too bad I don't know the name of this cake cuz I'd really wanna tell ppl to avoid it. There're still tonnes of cakes in the store that I didn't try so I guess I'll come back again another time to try it, and maybe this time I'll ask for the less sweet variety.

Our party of 4 came here last night for some late night dinner. The place was very quiet when we arrived, there was only 1 other table beside us. I guess it's because of the road blocks due to the Canada line skytrain stations which created such a difficulty to find parking nearby. The decor was nice, contemporary with some welcoming and comfortable feelings without having too dark of lighting. Anyways, since the food was tapas style, we ordered 8 dishes to b shared among us 4.
1. foie gras: not bad but a little too buttery and the foie gras taste almost wasn't delivered across. Plain crostini that came with it was perfect.
2. la petite salad nicoise with tuna: was not bad, tuna was tataki style which was even better than I expected. The touch of quail's eggs and baby olives made it interesting.
3. shrimp and crab cake: came in 4 pieces however each was very filling. Taste wise is not bad especially for $15
4. prawns piri piri: it's not bad but not spicy enough and could add some fresh taste into it like lemon, lime, or orange juice in.
5. bolhinos de bacalhau: came a bit over cooked (very dark as it was deep fried) but the filling was great. The filling wasn't the regular cod meat, I think it was a processed cod meat with some starch or mayo in it so it's got a very smooth consistency. I couldn't taste the saffron in the saffron aoli.
6. pork alentejana: AWESOME!!! I loved the strong and full flavour of this dish. The clams were cooked to perfection, not rubbery at all and they're of good quality cuz it was very meaty too. The pork was also very flavourful. This was definitely the highlight of the night. If u like clams, u'll love this dish.
7. papas portuguese: it's not bad but definitely not my favourite. It's just deep fried fingerling potatoes. The aioli's flavour was too smoky for me, but my friends liked it, so it was just a matter of preference.
8. entrecote gaufrittes: the strip loin was cooked to perfection, medium rare, unfortunately it was a touch too salty for us. I'll try it again next time.
The service here was great, our server was friendly and attentive (could b because of the quiet night). She even showed us that there's a hidden room that we could book for small parties. We also ordered the reisling, 8th generation of sth and it was very light and not bad. My bf then ordered a very interesting drink, a beef stock, taste like caesar cuz of the tabasco n worceshire sauce but uses beef stock instead of clamato. It was good but it lacked a little of fresh (from tomato or any fruit) and lacked a little sweet, so it was very savoury.
It's unfortunate that they are quiet due to the road blocks but I hope the customer base can pick up soon cuz I know that rental in Yaletown is extremely expensive. I'd definitely come back again to try other stuff, esp, they rotate the menu every 3 months.

Not as good as last time
Submitted Wednesday, May 20, 2009 - 4:33pm [Dine in]

My bf and I came here for some late night snacks last night. Our first experience here was a couple of months back and we remembered that the food was awesome but this time we came the food was just alright. The first thing that we noticed as we walked in was it's crowded in a weeknight with a different crowd, more drinking than hungry customers. The menu was also changed, they serve brunch and lunch now. So, from the dinner menu we ordered:
1. truffle oil poutine: when it came out, it was so fragrant, we could smell the truffle right away, which was awesome. Taste wise was ok, too little cheese and the poutine used pepper demi which is a little different, not too apparent difference though.
2. scallop cheviche: the scallop was chopped into very tiny bits (1/4 cm cube if not smaller) and the squid was rubbery and too chewy. It was served on toasted sandwhich bread. Taste was alright, just like another dish I can get anywhere and though it came in 3's but definitely didn't worth $13.
3. bison duo: I thought it would come as half carpaccio and half braised but instead it was like 90% braised and only 10% carpaccio so we weren't happy with it. Te braised bison was soft but not to the point of falling off bones and taste wise was just alright, just like any other restaurant, not amazing.
4. beef pizza off their regular menu: was alright, lots of beef slices and cheese on thin crust dough. I find this dish to be better than the cheviche and the bison duo but my bf didn't like it.
The cocktails like the devil's fruit was a touch too sweet compared to last time and the cocktail above it (in the menu) was also too sweet.
Service was great and very attentive. Ambiance was also great, brick walls and candles on the tables. It feels like a good dating place or hangout place.
I think I'll come back again, maybe not order the food that we ordered last night and try other stuff.

Great baked goods; alright for other food

I come here often to eat their egg tarts and their pineapple buns. They always go out fast, so I always call in advance so that they'd reserve me some. Their chinese style food is just alright, not typically good so it's really not worth mentioning other than it comes with a non hefty price tags. I will come back here again in the future cuz i love the baked goods and my auntie likes their chinese food.

Bad AYCE Hot Pot
Submitted Tuesday, May 19, 2009 - 1:47pm [Dine in]

I came here for AYCE Hot Pot sometime last year. My friend and I ordered lots of food such as oysters but limited to 2 per person. The oysters were the huge type and it was not cleaned properly so it got some grits when we ate it, even after boiling it in the hot pot. The service here was awful, I understand that it was crowded but the servers were rude and annoyed at us when we asked the servers to repeat the order. I will never come back again for Hot Pot here, I mean there are lots of Hot Pot places in Richmind that's much better than here, just go to alexandra road or street that's a minute away by driving.

Soggy birthday cakes
Submitted Tuesday, May 19, 2009 - 1:19pm [Dine in]

I ordered a regular fresh fruit with vanilla cake birthday cake a couple of months ago. I ordered for it 2 days in advance hoping that they could prepare me a fesh cake for the day I pick up. So I picked it up at 6pm and we cut the cake at 9 pm and all 4 of us found that the cake was soggy. It was as if it was prepared long ago and that's y the cake was soggy and not light and fluffy at all. I don't think i'll order birthday cakes from here anymore but I might try their single serving cakes in the future.

Absolutely awful cakes
Submitted Tuesday, May 19, 2009 - 1:04pm [Dine in]

My friend ordered a birthday cake from here a couple of months ago and it was awful. She ordered the tiramisu and I thought that it wasn't fresh, as if it was prepared 3 days before my gf picked it up. We had 6 people who attended the birthday dinner and none of us liked it, except the birthday girl who pretended that she liked it cuz it was a present from one of us. I would never order a birthday cake from here anymore and I would suggest that no one orders birthday cakes from here if you want to impress the crowd. I would give the individual serving cakes another try though and look for the newest cakes that aren't prepared days ago.

Authentic taiwanese food
Submitted Sunday, May 17, 2009 - 5:23pm [Dine in]

I've been for many years and at least once every 2 weeks. They used to be located in Yaohan Centre's foodcourt and now they've moved to this location. I always order the medicine pork ribs soup and the soup was very tasty and they are good for health but if u don't like those chinese herbs then don't order this. Another thing that I love is the beef noodle, the soup base is just right, you can taste that it's actually made from beef broth. N, I also ordered the deep fried chicken nuggets and the deep fried pork chop, they're both not oily and crispy. The drinks here are just alright maybe cuz I usually love HK style drinks with these kinda food, not bubble tea. But, if u like bubble tea then u can theirs. The food is also very reasonably priced, everything is under $10 I think. I would definitely come here again and I'd recommend anyone who wanna try authentic taiwanese home cooking.

Pretty good panini
Submitted Sunday, May 17, 2009 - 2:29pm [Dine in]

I have eaten here a couple of times and everytime I come here I was always satisfied with my panini. I love lamb so I always order the lamb panini and there's roasted red pepper, goat cheese and roast lamb slices. I find the taste to be pretty good. Today, I also came and ordered the rasberry whole wheat scone along with my panino and it tasted awful. It was hard, dry and tasteless. I've never had such a horrible scone before in my life. So, I would still recommend this place if u wanna have some nice panini but just avoid the scones.

I came here last week cuz my friend told me that I could go online here so I just came here after lunch to get online. The place was quiet, I think it's because the location is not very convenient to get parking spots. So, I ordered 1 chai latte the flavor was great but maybe I was very full at the time so I didn't really appreciate it. But, I can tell u that the internet connections was fast, and they have electricity plugs everywhere so u can charge ur laptops just about anywhere u sit. I'm sure I will b back n I'd recommend this place for anyone who needs wifi in richmond.

Best AYCE in town
Submitted Friday, May 15, 2009 - 2:48am [Dine in]

I came here last night for dinner with my aunt and her son for dinner and we all had the AYCE for $28 per person. I have not been to lots of AYCE places here, but I've tried Ebei, Shabusen and BC Sushi. I think that the selections here is really good compared to others, I mean they have good quality sashimi like Mirugai (Geoduck) and Amaebi (small sweet prawns) which are both my favorites. They also have some special items like scallop pearl sushi ( I think that's the name) that's pretty good too. For the cooked items they have great black cod that was very juicy and buttery, the beef tongue was also very good. I would definitely come back again when I'm craving for AYCE, maybe in a month or so. I think it's very good value for the food offering. The service was also very good. We have servers coming all the time if we needed more food and the food come within 5 mins upon ordering.

Decent restaurant with decent food
Submitted Thursday, May 14, 2009 - 3:32am [Dine in]

I came here last night with my bf for late night dinner, we arrived at 11pm. The place was very quiet maybe it was kinda late. We first ordered house sake which was low quality and made my stomach feel uneasy. For food, we ordered crab salad that was actually imitation crab with mayo and cucumber which tasted alright. We got the hamachi sashimi that was served frozen to us and made me very unhappy though i didn't communicate it to the server. The hamachi was fresh and tasted great but it just made me feel as if the chef didn't bother having a repeat customer. The deep fried gyoza also wasn't good, maybe cuz I prefer the regular pan fried gyoza. We also had the prosciutto roll that with unagi, mango, and cream cheeze filling. The roll tasted good but it had only one slice of prosciutto on top of the rice so I couldnt taste it. I think I would try it again later in a couple of months but not anytime soon. I also wouldn't recommend anyone to drink the house sake.
