Taste Of Vietnam, A1016 W Broadway, Vancouver
Great Little Place
Submitted Thursday, August 27, 2009 - 4:23pm [Dine in]

I have been to A Taste of Vietnam many times and have enjoyed all of my meals here. They have great subs during lunchtime and very reasonably priced main courses for dinner. The pho, salad rolls, vermicelli dishes are all great. A nice treat is the fresh watermelon, honeydew and cantelope served at the end of the meal.

Maurya Indian Cuisine1643 W Broadway, Vancouver
overrated
Submitted Thursday, August 27, 2009 - 4:18pm [Dine in]

We went to Maurya for dinner the other night after reading all the great reviews. I will say that the restaurant is tastefully decorated and the high ceilings make for a nice open atmosphere. However, the decor does not make up for the fact that the food is overrated and over priced. We live in a city that offers a variety of Indian restaurants and Maurya, is far below average. It's location on the westside is great and convenient, but I'd much rather drive an extra 10 minutes for far superior food. Don't like the reviews fool you. I have no idea who is giving this place a good rating.

Cheesecake Etc.2141 Granville, Vancouver
the cakes seem to have changed
Submitted Thursday, August 27, 2009 - 3:47pm [Dine in]

Having not been to Cheesecake Etc. for a couple years, we gave it another try. The cheesecakes seemed to have changed (not for the better) and have become smaller in size, and less flavorful. The toppings (mandarin orange and chocolate, and strawberry) seem to come from a can, or possibly be from a processed freezer package. I would be curious to know if the ownership has changed.

Balilicious Modern Indonesian3488 Cambie Street, Vancouver
tasty, but overpriced
Submitted Thursday, August 27, 2009 - 3:42pm [Dine in]

We went to Sate Satu after seeing their booth at Eat Vancouver. The food is very tasty, and spicy, and the presentation of each dish is very pleasing. However, the portions are teeny tiny, and the wait staff will badger you to order alcoholic drinks. If that isn't bad enough, you'll end up spending more than you expected to for a slightly above average meal.

Calhoun's Bakery Cafe3035 Broadway W, Vancouver
a note about calhoun's catering
Submitted Thursday, August 27, 2009 - 3:38pm [Dine in]

This might be a bit dated, but a few years ago I ordered corporate catering from Calhouns for an office function. I had received incredible service a few years before then, but had failed to realize the ownership of the restaurant had changed. Note that the goodies were delivered on large, plastic, disposable trays (similar to the ones you get if you buy a cake from a supermarket). I had set aside the metal tongs that were supplied for the fruit salad for pick up the next day. When the man arrived, he demanded that I return the plastic trays. When I told him that they had been disposed of, he threatened to charge me $20 per tray. Keep in mind, every other catering company I have used before, or since has never asked for these back. These trays were fairly large (at least 24" in diameter) and I would highly suspect they can be properly sterilized per VCH standards. Just be aware of this food handling issue should you consider them for catering your event.

Shaughnessy Restaurant5251 Oak St., Vancouver
Overpriced
Submitted Thursday, August 27, 2009 - 3:31pm [Dine in]

We went to the Shaughnessy Restaurant for a quick dinner and would say the pros would be good service, but the cons far outweigh the cost. I ordered the beef tenderloin and there was no more than 4 oz on the plate. Furthmore, the steak was overdone (not medium-well as I had requested). My dining partner had also ordered the same dish, and his piece or tenderloin must have been 40% bigger than mine. I would not suggest dining here for dinner, unless you are ok with paying for overpriced, average quality/tasting food.
