Pretty good experience.
Submitted Saturday, January 26, 2008 - 10:05am [Dine in]

I went to Kamei for the first time and was quite impressed. The setup is more authentic than many of the quick sushi joints downtown. The food was good - we tried many unusual bits. Prices were also good. Only complaint is that they booted us out at 2pm - kitchen was closing! Will definitely try again.

Great little steakhouse!
Submitted Saturday, January 26, 2008 - 9:57am [Dine in]

It's just the kind of place that you want to eat a steak. It's like going back to the beginnings of Vancouver when you dine at Hy's (and it does have a lot of history - so check it out).

We had a client lunch which was very good - my strip-loin was very very tasty! Cheesy bread also good - but requires 5 laps around the block straight after lunch.

No complaints - Hy's is just over the road from our office and for a special steak craving lunch it is just the place to go (much better than its neighbouring Keg). Like another reviewer - not sure I would shell out the $ myself - I cook great steaks for $4 at home! Lunches are reasonable - between $12 and $30. It's probably even worth trying just for its burger or sirloin salad.

Yuk!
Submitted Saturday, January 26, 2008 - 9:48am [Dine in]

Not surprised to see another poor review for Jan 25 ... we were a party of four last night and did not enjoy the experience at all. That said, we were clearly unaware that things had changed from fine dining to local kid smoking pub! There were kids puffing away in front of the door as we arrived so that we had to ask to get through; the doorman stood their laughing and puffing (intoxicated?) as I held the door for our clients to go in - ?!

Now onto the service - our waitress was nice but clearly stretched such that things were all over the place ... missing cutlery, deserts coming 15 minutes after coffees, etc.

The food - calamari was very good and tender ... presentation was very bare though. Ahi Tuna and Salmon dish was dry as hell on a plate the size of Vancouver. My tuna was still icy cold in the middle - yuk! - and I love Ahi! Apple pies came with ice cream melted. I was told that I had to eat it with a spoon as the restaurant had run out of forks - what!!!!

Anyway, I don't like giving poor reviews .. but clearly this place needs some management and some chefs that can add a bit of flavour. We will not be back.

Good experience ... but where are the people?
Submitted Saturday, November 24, 2007 - 11:45pm [Dine in]

We had a good evening at Bogart's. Our waitress was not the best ... but the managers saved her ass by taking away our plates, etc. It's a real pleasure to have the managers (owners?) do the rounds. The food was better than expected. A little disappointed that the prime rib was no longer at 8pm when we arrived ... but the steak was good enough to make up! The jazz was good and the ambiance nice. It was nice to not be chased out of one's seat like so many Vancouver restaurants now do. We will return.

As per my rating - a solid one!
Submitted Friday, May 4, 2007 - 11:26pm [Dine in]

Did our anniversary dinner on a week night. Food is good ... I was impressed with the Ahi Tuna; but less impressed with the seafood platter my wife had. It was a weeknight with tennis players in track pants and what seemed like casual diners (jeans/tees) in big groups ... we were expecting something a little more romantic and upper class - but it's probably different on the weekends. Our waitress was a star ... she gave us just the right amount of service and gave us all the time we needed. Try it for a solid dine out.

Good coffee
Submitted Saturday, April 21, 2007 - 6:34pm [Dine in]

Had two cups at a recent seminar and have to say that their regular filter coffee is one of the best I have had from a small cafe - bets Starbucks hands down. Muffin was good - but not as good and rustic as you can get at a Bread Garden first thing in the morning.

Good food ... no good regular coffee
Submitted Saturday, April 21, 2007 - 6:30pm [Dine in]

I like their omelette meal for lunch - it is tasty and generous. Their regular coffee is absolutely awful - and this is based on several experiences. Next time will try the Americano ... I am sure it will be better. It's a cafe atmosphere ... and that's good. Try it!

Just OK
Submitted Saturday, April 21, 2007 - 6:26pm [Dine in]

The food is definitely tasty at Nyala and we enjoy going just for the food; however, it is no culinary experience so to speak. Service was rushed and impersonal - although I do like the cleaning towel idea before starting the meal. Ambiance is not great ... you feel like you are sitting in a classroom close to the street. Go for the food; expect little for service and ambiance.

Keg Caesars595 Hornby Street, Vancouver
Solid
Submitted Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 1:27pm [Dine in]

Only ever tried the Keg at lunch during rush hour - and for the 20 or more lunches I have had there, I give it an all round solid.

Some food is better than others. Prime rib sandwich is brilliant. Burgers are good. Sirloin salad is good. But stay away from chicken fingers. The lunch sirloins are nothing to write home about.

We continue to return because of convenience - as I believe most do.

Not sure I agree with other reviews
Submitted Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 1:23pm [Dine in]

Our experience was just OK - but nothing special. I thought it was a little over priced for what it was and the quality of the food/service they offer. They are definitely under serviced with only one waitress to do drinks and food to all tables.

That said, the food was tasty - and hence the four stars on food.

We might return return for a lunch - but not dinner.

Best Greek for a while!
Submitted Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 10:11am [Dine in]

We have had some pretty grotty experiences at Greek restaurants over the last two years and have tended to avoid them. We read the review of Athene's online and thought we would give it a try - we were pleasantly impressed. It's clearly about the owner - he approached us a few times, including as we left and was very polite and nice. We will definitely be back!

Would recommend for FLAVOUR!
Submitted Saturday, January 27, 2007 - 6:57pm [Dine in]

Haven't been back in a while, but thought I would drop a quick review. We have been to the Fassil a handful of times - the food is brilliantly tasty and we like the idea of eating all of those flavours with their pancake type bread. The restaurant ambiance and service, however, were nothing to write home about. Nonetheless, go - because you will love it for the food.

Did a Saturday lunch with my wife. Food was good tasting and good value - I did a prawn curry and she had fish and chips. I would imagine the place would be quite a bit more lively in the evening. We will return.

OK, but food could be better
Submitted Sunday, January 14, 2007 - 4:20pm [Dine in]

Just popped in for a Sunday afternoon light lunch at Cardero's - the weather was magnificent and the view amazing. My wife and I went for the Squid and Chicken Wok plates - they were just OK ... but could equally come from a western Chinese express take out. Our waitress was decent - but nothing out of the ordinary given that there weren't many others dining. I would go again for the location, but not necessarily the food.
