totally disappointing
Submitted Wednesday, July 1, 2009 - 10:48am [Dine in]

We were really hoping to like this place. It's close to home, the menu LOOKS good. Unfortunately it did not meet our requirements for a regular dining place.

We ordered a lot of food. We always do - to get an overall sampling of what the menu has to offer. The carpaccio was actually frozen. Not just a bit, but completely frozen. We asked the waitress to take it back, and she returned with it stating "it's supposed to be frozen". Fine - so with open mind, we ventured into other dishes. The pasta was absolutely overcooked. Flavourless alfredo sauce, pizza that may has well been from the frozen aisle at the supermarket, and tough veal scallopine. To top it all off, the frozen carpaccio interaction resulted in rude service for the remainder of the dining experience. Sorry but...we won't go again. Very disappointing.

Swiss Chalet Rotisserie & Grill3204 West Broadway, Vancouver
Chalet Suisse - a Love Affair
Submitted Sunday, November 30, 2008 - 9:39pm [Dine in]

Most food-enthused people would be ashamed to share their fondness for Swiss Chalet. I think it is time to give this restaurant the applause that it truly deserves. Not once have I experienced a morcel of chicken that hasn't been cooked to immaculate perfection. The service is always so enthusiastic that it wakes you up - how could that be wrong. Simply utter the words "festive special" and you will be accepted into the threshold of the swiss chalet lifestyle. If you are too embarrassed to let your friends know about your favourite restaurant, consider calling it "Chalet Suisse", to add a certain flair or je-ne-sais-quoi to the name.

East is East3243 W. Broadway, Vancouver
Good Take-out Option
Submitted Sunday, November 30, 2008 - 9:31pm [Dine in]

I confess that I only like to get take-out from East is East. While some may enjoy the ambiance and theatrics, it is not my cup of tea. Yes, Kitsilano was once a hippy haven, and this restaurant acts as a hommage to a previous era. Personally, I prefer not to reek of patchouli after enduring an hour of sitar and silly stage sets! So: I do encourage other yuppies out there to try the take out. It isn't easy to find healthy options when on the run. I recommend the Daal soup, which is fantastic. Most of the Smoothies and shakes are unbelievably good. I appreciate the fact that the take-out window exists - and they even let you sample the chai when you order from outside!

Fun place to know about
Submitted Sunday, November 30, 2008 - 9:23pm [Dine in]

Part of going out to restaurants is the discovery of new neighbourhoods and parts of the city that one rarely frequents. This restaurant is tucked away in a strange and sleepy west side residential area. Easy to park! What a gem. The food is absolutely fantastic in this tiny little space. Good arena for people-watching. The ONLY complaint I have is that one has to walk through the kitchen to find the bathroom. I guess that could be considered as part of the fun. It is comfortable like dining in someone's house.

Worst Service in Vancouver
Submitted Sunday, November 30, 2008 - 9:12pm [Dine in]

If you enjoy at least some level of good service, do not go here. It is unfortunate that the venue with the most spectacular location and architecture in Vancouver is occupied with such a disappointing establishment. I have been to this restaurant a few times now, and the experiences get worse each time. The last visit, we took my sister, who was visiting from out of town. The waitress treated the job as if it were a low-grade pub, walking away while we were in the midst of placing an order, totally disinterested in helping us. The food was mediocre. I will only go back if a different restaurant takes over the space.
