Kam's Place1043 Davie Street, Vancouver
all hype
Submitted Monday, April 27, 2009 - 3:07am [Dine in]

Read many ads and a couple of recommendations from acquaintances. Decided to give it a try. I called for reservations and was answered by a Very Rude man (Kam?) He asked how many, and when I mentioned two he said "no reservations, just come down" and hung up. I had to call back. I was already pretty cheesed off, but I promised I would take my girlfriend here to try it.

When we got there, we were greeted by the same man on the phone, but in a rather surprisingly friendly manner. The place is too dark. The food is seriously over rated. We ordered the pad thai, green beans, some kind of kams special brocolli and beef dish and something else which I've forgetten already. The pad thai was sub-par along with the beans. Every other thai or malaysian restaurant I've been to is FAR FAR FAR better for these two classic dishes. The brocolli thing with beef was absolutely nasty. It looked and tasted like gravy poured over some slices of beef on a bed of brocolli. I had about 3-4 pieces (only because I hate wasting food). The food doesn't taste authentic malay or thai; it taste like low class chinese food. We finished everything else but left that brocolli dish. Nobody asked how our meal was. Nobody cleared our table.
The owner gives gifts to certain tables, I haven't quite figured that part out, but I don't intend on finding out anyway. First and last visit for SURE.

Silver Tower Cafe Restaurant8500 Alexandra Road, #100, Richmond
late night eats!

I visit silver tower more frequently that I would like. It was one of the few places that are still open in the later hours.

The value is excellent, you get a good portion of food for what you pay. Usually the meals include soup and a drink. The food tastes fine, nothing special. Run of the mill HK style cafe food. They don't charge extra for cold drinks which is nice. Seating is good, there are many booths.

Servers and waitress are some times difficult to get a hold of and when you do get a hold of one, they seem like they would rather be somewhere else or in a rush to do something instead of serve you. If you visit this restaurant during the peak hours, you will see what I mean. Signal your hand, they come by and ask you what you want while still moving, sometimes they'll be so far away you have to stick your head out to finish your sentence because they're already 2 tables down.

Hungry at night

I visited this place with a friend who recommends it. Actually, it was one of the few places left open in the area.

We were promptly seated in the corner where the tables are too small for the average sized man. The place is a little dim and small with enough staff for good coverage. However, the staff have very poor communication abilities and I questioned whether or not I was accidentally speaking french. The waitress which served our table did not understand English, Cantonese, OR Mandarin. The menu items leave a lot to your imagination on what it will taste like or look like when it arrives. Good luck trying to ask the staff about the food or drink items.

I ordered a cutlet chicken on rice with japanese curry sauce. It was alright, but nothing special. For less money, I could have went across the street to silver tower for the same meal(with more food) which includes a drink and soup.

My friend ordered a strawberry milk tea, I had a taste and had to immediately give it a FAIL. My other friend had a passion fruit green tea and he said it was good.

Late night eats
Submitted Monday, April 27, 2009 - 2:27am [Dine in]

I've been visiting Donair King for a couple of years now. I have brought many friends with me and they are all HOOKED! I mainly visit Donair King in the late hours, around 1am-2am. Around that time, it has to be the best place in vancouver for any kind of food. Overall, they have the best donairs I've tried in this city.
The owner is very meticulous person and makes sure your donair is perfect before serving it. If he wouldn't eat it, he won't serve it. He is super friendly and will make it the way you prefer. I don't even order anymore, I just walk in and he remembers exactly how I like it :)
I gave the ambiance a low rating because it's more of a grab a go kind of place with limited seating area which is usually slightly messy because of the drunks who party it up next door. The music is usually good, but can get loud at times which makes it difficult to have a conversation. It's different every night so this is not a generalization. There will be quiet nights when the club is closed and it's more of a relaxed environment.
I drive from south vancouver to donair king several times a week. It's that good.
