Royal City Thai634 Columbia Street, New Westminster
Absolutely loved it!

Went to the New West Quay-side public market today, but found it is still closed. Bit of disaster, since the kids were counting on getting some much needed refreshments. The kind one needs to get through a cold Dec. afternoon.

So, we decided to walk down Columbia street and take our chances.

The first surprise was downtown New Westminster. An interesting mix of antique stores, high-end fashion boutiques, and seedy dives advertising nubile dancers. But no real food options, besides the ubiquitous Starbucks and Waves coffee factories.

Then we came across Royal City Thai. Place looked big and quiet from the outside. Too quiet? Should we risk it? What if it is a complete disaster? So many questions...

Anyway, moving the story along, we decided to take our chances. And, boy, are we ever glad we did.

Big spacious seating, where you can't hear the other patrons conversing. Friendly, attentive service that never gets overbearing. And outstanding, authentic food at prices that makes one wonder why one is paying an arm and a leg at Banana Leaf or Tropika.

The red curry was just the right mix of coconutty sweetness and sambal spiciness. The satays and spring rolls were moist and crispy, respectively. And the Pad Bai Grapao Goong - tiger prawns with mushrooms, bell pepper, Thai chili and basil - were to die for.

We'll be back to sample the other 57 things on the menu ;-)
