I've been to John's Place about 10 times now. I'm not sure I'm planning on going back. It seems to me that if you are just a casual diner, you get the bottom of the barrel service. If you're a regular there, you seem to be treated like royalty. My latest experience, the server had noticed 4 (yes, 4) times that I did not get the coffee I ordered, each time making a quip about it then going and sitting down with regulars. It was at the end of the meal that it actually clicked in to her that I didnt have it, and offered to go and get it then, to which I declined. Every time I've been seated, the menu has basically been tossed onto the table and you are dismissed until the drink order 5 minutes later. Smiles are non existant to the casual diner. Its only saving grace is the food, which has been consistently good.
The food may be good, but I go out for the whole experience, so after 10 times, I've learned my lesson.
A friend I was visiting in Vancouver took me to this restaurant a few months back. With great preliminary reviews, I was happily surprised. The music was fantastic, and the service was great. I ordered a steak which was not cooked exactly to my liking (a bit overcooked), but my friends chicken was great. Overall a really nice time.
I was expecting great things from this restaurant. I had family over from Australia and wanted to take them out for a nice dinner. What a disappointment. The server was borderline rude, and the food was unpalatable. The salad was good, on an upside, but stay away from the meat. I wish I could say nicer things, but I really can't think of any.
If you're looking for a really good soft serve ice cream, this is the place to go. If you're looking for a cheap food, you've found it, but the quality is questionable. A good place to go if you are going through Beacon Hill and need a quick place to eat, but don't expect a five star meal. The ice cream is ace though!
I discovered this crazy little place when I was visiting a friend that lived in Cook Street Village last year and it's been a bi weekly staple ever since. The staff is really friendly and make it fun. The food is really affordable (ranging from about 5-12$) and best of all, homemade and it tastes like it. I recommend the burgers and fish and chips. Always fun, and always tasty. Good place to bring the family too.
