Bin 942 Tapas Parlour1521 W. Broadway, Vancouver
Go somewhere else!
Submitted Sunday, January 10, 2010 - 9:38pm [Dine in]

Went to Bin 942 the other night for the first time in a while. The food was atrocious, except for the mussels. The navajo fry bread was passable but the hummus was not. The interior is drab and tired. The service was Ok but the food was quite disappointing. There are too many good restaurants in Vancouver to visit! I think this restaurant needs a serious makeover.

Cardero's1583 Coal Harbour Quay, Vancouver
It's about the location
Submitted Thursday, August 13, 2009 - 8:06pm [Dine in]

Over the years, we've been to Cardero's several times. We come here because of the location at the marina... the view is hard to beat! We love the west coast style that Cardero's offers. Unfortunately, I think that the food has some room for improvement.

Waiting for a table in the bar, we order ceasar drinks. These drinks were so spicy and over-seasoned, I had to request that they be watered down. When we were seated on the patio, the view was pretty good... but the food was kind of bland. We had the tuna tomato salad and this was probably the tastiest dish we had, essentially a seafood spin on insalata caprese. My husband had the cajiun lingcod and I had the vongole linguini. While edible, neither dishes were great. We followed the mains with the sorbet, which was obviously scooped earlier and water started to crystallize, and a cappuccino, which was yummy.

The service was above average. The server assumed that we were tourists and worked hard for a good tip.

Moderne Burger2507 West Broadway St., Vancouver
Juicy burgers!
Submitted Thursday, August 13, 2009 - 7:46pm [Dine in]

This was our first visit to Moderne Burger after their renovations. I thought the new space looked pretty great and gave them the elbow room they've desperately needed. I like the bar in the middle and the retro-green instills a calm vibe.

This place has a limited menu, which I do not take issue with. I like restaurants that stick to what they're good at. And this place is good at burgers. We always get the sirloin burgers and they are fresh and very, very juicy. And that's kind of the problem-- your burger starts disintegrating at first bite. Many napkins will be required. Finger licking is encouraged. So, word to the wise: don't go here on a date or on a business lunch.

The fries here are also good! How can you argue with homemade fries cut per order? But I have to say that the milkshakes disappoint: the fake whip cream and maraschino cherry didn't do it for me.

Ping's Cafe2702 Main Street, Vancouver
Great vibe, decent food
Submitted Thursday, August 13, 2009 - 7:33pm [Dine in]

My husband and I went to Ping's Cafe the other night. I had read good things about the space and food, so naturally I wanted to check it out for myself. The minimally decorated room with the recycle / reuse philosophy was worth checking out. But while all the food was tasty and the prices quite reasonable, nothing was exceptionally delicious.

We shared 6 small plates and my favourite dish was the Agedashi Tofu. Other dishes were good, including: Ping Fries, tuna tataki, and kushi (breaded pork skewers). I noticed my husband picking some burnt bits off his pork gyoza though, and my ika karaage was also over done. The drinks were very good. I had a lychee kir (lychee liquor with white wine) that I've been thinking about ever since!

This place is definitely a hip hangout in the Main area and attracts certain clientele. Before we knew it, it was full of trendy twenty-somethings. When we were at Ping's, a photographer was taking pictures for a magazine. That kinda says it all, doesn't it?
