I have to wonder if people who rave about Vij's have been to other indian resturants?! Don't get me wrong, I like Vij's very much but you over pay for small portions. It is as if you can say, "this is high end, you should pay more," when in reality it is not high end. Small portions does not make this high end. I also find it over spiced in some cases.
This site needs a rating for value. I would give it a 2 for value but 4/5 for others. If you don't care what you get for your money this is great.
Bad service but I don't really care about service I care about the food. If you are on robson and need indian I think this is your best option. Not everyone knows about the room upstairs, much nicer to sit up there if you can (ask).
Okay, I have a distant memory of this place. I don't expect ambiance in an indian rest. but this was dingy to the point of being a deterrent and made me wonder about the kitchen cleanliness if the dining room was that bad. In any case, if the food was amazing I would have returned but it was only mediocre. Head a few blocks west for better indian on robson.
Not many places deliver, they do and are solid. They also make a good mango lassi. I wish this site gave .5 ratings. There is something in between solid and outstanding, that is good 3.5 for food rating. The food is good, at least for takeout.
Large portions, starter, full thali with mutlple curries, drink all for an affordable price. Anywhere else would order dishes and share but always go for the thali here. Nothing special food wise but solid and tasty. Recommended for value.
How can 3's make a 4 rating? There is no value rating (which is stupid, dinehere should add this because there is a difference when you pay 5x as much you expect more so having value would really help. Hopefully someone from this review site will add this).
The resurant is very nice with double high ceilings adding to the drama and a custom bar that is very attractive and unique for an indian rest. Food is solid but not amazing. Service is hit and miss as you can tell from other reviews. Good all you can eat lunch buffet.
Many people don't know that the little staircase to the left leads to an amazing patio. This is the only indian rest. I have every been to with a great patio so it is a treat. Unfortunately the food has really gone down hill and is now just average. Still, great patio on the 3rd level over looking the water, stanley park, ubc.
I gave ambiance a 5 but really that is not the right word, view is 5 ambiance is 3. For ambiance try Maurya great high ceiling, nice bar etc.
Oh, so you wanted to hear about the food? Well, if you just want great food I suggest to head a few blocks west to all india instead.
To preface this review I eat a lot of indian food. I mean I eat indian food 5 times a week and have visited 30+ resturants in the lower mainland. All India in West Van holds their own. When we went it was quiet (weekday evening) so I hope they are able to stay in business. The important part, the food, was great. The service was well intentioned but a little over the top (suggesting things etc.) I suppose if you had never eaten indian before it could be considered a good thing but the impression I got was a bit of a pushy oversell. It should be noted everything was good food wise from the starters to the mains. They use tea lights to keep the curries warm which is a major plus (anyone who eats indian knows how quickly curries get cold in those metal dishes). Also, they provide warmed plates. These little things really improve the experience and flavours. Did I mention the food is great? If you are in west van, this is the place to go. The only exception being Handi's if you have out of town indian lovers because even though the food at handis is much worse than all india, Handis has an amazing patio on the 3rd floor with a view of the water. But aside from the view, all india clearly beats handis in every other respect. In summary, great food, and I hope that is why you are going to any resturant. Nice ambiance for indian in particular (not known for ambiance IMHO). Portions are well sized. Pricing is affordable for a higher end place. If you live on the north shore it is a no brainer, GO HERE. If you live elsewhere, it is actually worth the trip, combine it with a walk on the sea wall.
