First time my girlfriend and I went is before we moved to Kits. We were going to California Sushi in Coquitlam, a really amazing place. But Kishu star is NOT. Our nigiri salmon had salmon that was dry, wrinkled.... the service sucked but with sushi places, it's always pretty good, or pretty bad. The sushi didn't feel fresh at all, the rice was hard. We went a second time to give it another try as fluctuations in Vancity are common and accepted.

Nah, it looks nice inside, but the service and food quality will keep me away, forever.

Decent
Submitted Thursday, March 26, 2009 - 12:48am [Dine in]

I go there once in a while because it's close to work and on Sundays, not many places are opened. It's cheap and fast but i don't care, i go there because it's edible. You are not gonna get something dry or not fresh. It's not top quality but for what you'll pay, you won't feel ripped off. The place looks a bit crapy, seats are fucked really and there not really any kind of privacy. Bottom line is, service is decent, food is decent, service is decent. I can live with that.

Trendy don't mean GOOD
Submitted Thursday, March 26, 2009 - 12:33am [Dine in]

So after kicking and bitching about and against Sophie's Whatever Café, me and my girlfriend decided to give it another try. At last, the service was fast and nice. We didn't wait 15 minutes for coffee. Food still pretty bland, crowd still pretty wannabe trendy new parents with the little brand new shiny baby. I guess when you get to that point in life, Sophie's become what's defined as cool and exiting; "Wow you go to Sophie on a weekly basis, you must be hip to the groove". I don't have kids, and the food is bland, and the decoration is tasteless. If you're in need of exitement and change of your trivial boring life, try bolting any kind of metal crap that no Antique stores will take, hire a couple of kids and serve free range chicken, and maybe some Bethoven listening eggs and call it Bob's Cosmogonic Café, don't forget to open it in Kits!! it won't work in Saskatchewan

Good Pizza
Submitted Wednesday, March 25, 2009 - 11:41pm [Dine in]

I ordered 2 for 1 pizza and it is what i got. 31$ for two large pizzas, not bad. I must admit is one of the best pizza i had, but this is just from pizza places in BC. I'm used to the NON 2 for 1 pizzas from Quebec, Italians and Greeks make it 1 inch thick packed with a ton of fresh veggies and the places you get a 2 for 1 is usually the cheap places that poor people go to.

Anyway, those pizzas were not great but pretty good. It's not super thick not super thin, not pacted not empty, but at least if was definitely not bland like the other pizza i had here. In overall it was a good experience outside the 1 hour wait for the delivery, the vegetarian pizza is pretty good.

I went to many Indian restaurants and i can say that this is a restaurant above the others for the taste. My only problem was that you have to buy the naan bread on the side, and the rice too (4$ for a little plate of rice, 1.50 for an individual portion of bread), call me fancy but when i have to start paying for the little details that cost nothing to make, i get a little upset. But for around 35$, you can feed two person very very well. Will go back for sure.

As mentioned in other reviews this place is located in the trendy area of Yew Street. The inside of the place is nice, a bit dark and the music is sometimes loud, however they do have good song selections. We've been there 3 times so here's what we think:

1st time: good music, good service, great fish and chips and hamburger. A bit pricey but it was O.K for a date. I asked for a dirty martini with gin and it came back with no olive... I thought bartenders are taught how to make a dirty martinis. it's a classic drink. we paid 60$ for 2 plates, and 3 drinks..

2nd time: just had drinks.. They were ok. I had a classic margarita but it tasted more like 7-up with extra lime. Ok amount of alcohol.
My boyfriend had this tropical drink with cranberries. He liked it..
service Ok. As I was drinking my ''margarita'' I noticed that the cook/chef kept eating in the kitchen. He wasn't ''testing'' the food he was talking to the waitress and eating with his hands and then he would continue cooking. This is not a hygienic practice... And not a good sight in a restaurant.

3rd time: We took the steak sandwich and the fajitas.. The steak sandwich was not bad, except that this pseudo sandwich was a pile of steak on a charred piece of baguette. Sandwich ? My boyfriend was deceived. The fajitas were very bland. Rice was dried etc etc. Another inconsistent restaurant in Kitsilano.

Fresh food and great service
Submitted Friday, June 20, 2008 - 10:18am [Dine in]

I tried many sushi places in Vancouver and I hate when the food or service changes. The food has to be fresh, the service has to be reasonable. My experiences from all the restaurants has been almost always fluctuating. One of the only restaurant that always been constant, and i mean constant, is Mandala. The food is ALWAYS good. The service, same thing. And that's exactly the reason why i keep on going there, to sit and eat, or call to place a pickup order and eat amazingly fresh food. A must try is the Crispy Mango Roll :)

It's been amazing, bad and more terrible than any others
Submitted Friday, June 20, 2008 - 9:57am [Dine in]

Me and my girlfriend went there couple of months ago, the food was ok (hey, it's american mexican food, relax !), the margaritas were amazing, pina colada, amazing as well. We went back for a couple of drinks weeks later, sat at the bar and really really enjoyed the barman that day, drinks were really amazing. So we decided to invite a friend and make him discover those drinks while eating nachos.... 10 minutes after we arrived the waiter came and told us he'd be with us in a moment... 15 minutes later, after talking endlessly with the tables he was "serving", he comes back and ask us what we wanted... with ATTITUDE ??? I want to f***ing order what do you think ? We ordered some drinks and i hope i was just pissed about the service but the drinks were not so great anymore. We ordered some nachos when he came back after 45 minutes. A Sip, and sip sip sip... and sip sip sip later, our drink are far gone and the waiter is no where to be found... I much time does it take to make nachos ? How about more drinks ?? Finally after an hour and 10 minutes of waiting and waiting and having the right to only have one drink, my girlfriend is starting to really be terminated. We ask for either the food and service, or the freaking bill. Politely, another waitress ask us to wait a couple more minutes, and the food would appear. No way, CYA!!

What was that??
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 10:45pm [Dine in]

Feeling like eating Greek food, we decided to call and order from Olympia. I've never really been deceived by Greek food, ever. Sometimes the food was expensive and just decent but still, not bad per say. When we received the food half an hour after (it was fast so fresh right ?), we open those two 35$ packages to discover.... 6 hard pieces of lamb over Uncle's Ben sticky rice, hard-cold-soaked garlic bread, mushy-dried-meat moussaka and tasteless Greek Salad, tasteless because when you cut vegetables, if you let them sit in a container for too long, the flavors disappear... Everything was for sure prepared a long time in advance. Sometimes one or two things can be off, but all of it ?? I mean what was that?

good all you can eat experience
Submitted Friday, March 21, 2008 - 8:57pm [Dine in]

We went to an all you can eat sushi for the first time and it was not bad at all, for what it is. It is not a buffet and it is not a high end sushi bar, so if that's what you are looking for, don't go.

We were a total of three people, this might affect our dining experience here. The more people you are with, the slower the service.

A bit on the pricey side ( 23$ before 9or 10 pm and late night diner is 12 $), but it is relative to how much you can eat. They have 2 prices for the all you can eat, one is cheaper and more limited and the other has a bit more choice.

The new york steak style beef was good, it is really thin, but well cooked and tasty, same foes for the chiken skewers.

The sashimi was good as well as the nigiri sushi. Nothing too extravagant but, fresh, which is the MOST important aspect of eating sushi.

The Agedashi Tofu was mediocre, it didn't come with a lot of sauce and it was too crispy...I gues the consistency of the tofu wasn't correct. The Tempura vegetables were good, a bit too greasy for my tase, but then again, tempura is deep fried!

The mango dessert was GREAT and it is includedi n the menu, so I don't know about any extra charges because I ordered it twice.

SERVICE: fast and efficent( they have these little blackberries so no forgetting the order) our hot meals were hot and our cold meals were fresh. We got there at about 8pm,so by the time it was getting really packed we were leaving, no complains about the service really.

An ok place, with ok food, crowded little place. Went couple of times and service sucked sometimes but overall ok. If you want kick ass breakfast, make it yourself. Not expensive either. Will return on those rainy mornings where i'm just too lazy to cook.

Good price good food.
Submitted Friday, March 21, 2008 - 2:17am [Dine in]

It's not pretending to be a 5 stars restaurant and it's not. But it is sure a good place to go and pay not much for a good breakfast. Service is always good, coffee is very good, potatoes and eggs are good too. The basic breakfast is a good deal. Denny's charges you 12$ for a breakfast, sophie's cosmic café tastes like microwaved breakfast, Joe's grill is a better deal. The french toast were good. Whatever, overall i'd rather pay a reasonable amount of money for a reasonable breakfast than go to an overrated place, overpriced with junk hanging on the walls.

I tried many places for sushi around 4th and Broadway. The eatery is a busy and loud place, but the food is amazing. They have a diversity of sushi i've never seen before. Definitely a fusion sushi place. Everyone i went with was surprised of the quality of the food and the freshness of it. The service is good. Make a reservation, and don't expect too much food, it's expensive but the quality of the food will kick your ass. Pay and enjoy.

This sushi bar was very good. It's half american (like every other sushi place in north america) and half fusion sushi. Surprisingly good. Service was impecable. A very nice place to go eat a tropical roll and some other fancy sushi, sip a good tea in a peaceful place. Definitely going back there.

Hell's atmosphere as well
Submitted Friday, March 21, 2008 - 1:26am [Dine in]

On a rainy thursday night we went to a couple of places and they were closing, due to a lack of customers. So we finally ended up in Hell's Kitchen. We ordered a couple of martinis in the very loud kitchen of hell. The dry martinis was had too much vermouth, does anybody knows how to make them in Vancouver?? And the "too hot for teacher" or whatever they called it was missing alcohol, but i'm kind of used to it, specially on "martinis are on special tonight". Overall it's good, but definitely not what i expected. You expect high class, high prices, high tastes. It's just an impersonnal restaurant with a bad ass name, with a loud crowd, bad organisation and slow service. Not my taste really. It's full of loud, drunk, hippy-trendy-wannabe people that want to include a cool named restaurant in their daily discussions...
