Stopped by for lunch with some friends based on the reviews I saw here. I had the oven fried chicken dinner combo with the roast potatoes and really liked it. Everyone enjoyed their lunch including one who had the pulled chicken sandwich. The roast potatoes that come with my lunch were good and those who had the roast veggies said they were excellent as well. The place was clean and had a chain restaurant feel to it even though it isn't. The owner was behind the counter and gave the service a personal touch. I agree with the others that the menu is a bit hard to figure out at first with options and specials scattered all around everywhere. I would recommend giving it a try.
Ordered some takeout, they were nice and friendly on the phone. As everyone says the portions are huge but the quality is not that great. If you're a starving student looking to fill up for not much money Samurai would be a good choice. If you want good sushi I would recommend somewhere else. One of the people eating described the fish as slimey. I found the rolls and nigiri too large as well.
I get dragged out for Pho on a very regular basis because my wife loves it. Personally I can take or leave it. However having visited a good selection of the Pho restaurants in Vancouver I know a good one when I find it. The food is excellent with the best meat quality I've found at a Pho place. The decor is a step up from the usual with leather chairs and some nice big tables. I've been back several times and never disappointed.
I'm no stranger to pubs and since Penny Lane is in the neighborhood I'm no stranger to it as well. The quick summary is that Penny Lane is an average pub. In a bit more detail the service tends to be pretty good with fast drink orders and a fair bit of table attention. The ambiance is nothing special and the food can be hit or miss. I wouldn't avoid it but if I'm not in the neighborhood I wouldn't drive across town for it either.
and they've got great sushi here. The service has always been great, it's very obvious that you are supposed to order up front and then have your meal delivered. The quality of the fish is excellent, I'm surprised this place isn't better known. It's not very fancy inside but for great sushi at great prices Kilala can't be beat.
Tiny place with a couple of tables crammed inside. The food is great, portions are large and it's prepared quickly. I prefer the souvlaki and donair here to any other places I've tried in Vancouver in this price range.
Been here a bunch of times and most times I'm pleasantly suprised by the food. A good variety of food/drink specials and decent ambiance round out a great place to go for a meal of the vening. A variety of tables, booths, bar stools and a room on the back offer places to sit. The beer selection on tap is good, but not outstanding. I've moved away from the neighbourhood but still find myself driving back here when I want a beer and some good pub food.
Made a reservation for a special date with my wife and they lost it. I guess I should have called to confirm, but the hostess spent all her time implying that I was just trying to jump the line on a busy weekend evening. After waiting 1.5 hours for a table I was so annoyed I couldn't enjoy the food. Other people seem to enjoy it so maybe you should give it a try, but I'll never be going back.
I've eaten at a bunch of Indian places but always find myself coming back here. I have no idea if the food here is authentic but I've enjoyed more than most of the Indian places I've tried on Main and Fraser. Usually order for takeout now, the restaurant tends be dead even on weekend evenings so it's not a particularly fun place to eat. As the other reviews mentioned the decor is nothing to write home about. I particulary enjoy the Sag Paneer.
I'm a little bit surprised at the poor service ratings this place gets. Maybe because we tend to go early and bring the kids before it gets busy we've never had any problems. They've always been great at handling special requests for the kids and made us feel comfortable. The food is great and prepared with fresh, organic ingredients so you know what you're eating which is great if you have any good allergies. My main complaint is after eating here a few times I found the menu to be a bit small and found myself hoping I would find the special of the day appealing because I had already tried most of the menu.
For some of the best sushi in Vancouver in this price range you can't go wrong with Shiro's. Can get crowded at dinner time so you may have to wait for a table. Some of the noodle dishes never seem to be available but other than that I've got no complaints. The sushi is fresh and well prepared and I've enjoyed their cooked menu items as well.
Been here a couple of times and for a specialty wing place I think the wings are average. They're not bad, but they're not great either. I agree with other review that it bothers me to get charged an extra dollar for blue cheese dip to go with the wings. The ambience is below average for me as well. I would rather go to Earl's, Cactus club, or the local pub for hot wings. The one thing you do have to do give them Kudo's for is their variety - lot's of different flavours and options.
The decor could use a bit of updating but the food is good and inexpensive. We've been here several times with and without kids and they've gone out of their way to accomodate special requests and even held the baby a couple of times when they weren't busy so we could get a chance to eat. Personal favourite is the hot and sour soup with dumplings.
