Arroy-d Thai3106 Cambie Street, Vancouver
Love the Food, Love the Decor
Submitted Monday, October 22, 2007 - 6:37pm [Dine in]

I've been eating at this restaurant ever since it was opened. I've brought my bf, gf's and family there many times.
I have one word that clearly describes their food, "AUTHENTIC". When I take one bite of their food, my taste buds start to dance with pleasure. I could taste all sorts of delicious flavors. Also the food doesn't make me thirsty at the end of the meal. I don't think they use MSG.
At Arroy-D, I like to order their fried rice or fried noodles of any kind is very delicious. Their satays are marinated very well. I always order Tom Kha soup and they're sooo addictive! The vegetables are fresh and crunchy. Not like those mushy and discolored veg you have at other restaurant. If you compare it to other restaurants like Tropika (sooo mainstream), Thai House (gross) or Red Basil (diluted), they are on the "good try" list. I don't think those places use authentic spices b/c the taste is so different and sometimes even bland.
Another word to describe this restaurant is, "CONSISTENT." The quality and quantity of the food is always the same. And this is very hard to do especially that horrible cambie construction line going on. I know this restaurant is suffering b/c every time I go there, the tables are never full. And I am very glad that they are still holding on b/c once the tunnel is done, their business will skyrocket. Parking is a disaster right now but it's all worth it.
I totally recommend this place. All of my guests (a lot of them are picky) enjoy this place and same for all the other reviewers.

Boy, do I have lots to complain about this place. I've never been there before but it looked like a fun decorated place and the food looked really yummy on the menu and poster.
So we went inside, waited, it was busy so I understand if we do not receive first class service. We saw a lady, she made eye contact w/ us so I told her "for two". She did not say hi or responded in any way and just walked off setting the table. When she came back like a minute later, she asked us if we were here first. I looked confused. There was another couple behind us but they just walked in. She went to ask the other couple who was first and they said it was us so we sat down. I was pretty upset, we approached the server first. When we were ready to order, nobody came to our table. We kept on looking around, waving our arms in the air and nobody got our attention. Until 5-10 minutes when I was getting more hungry and grumpy. We ordered the pork chop w/ rice and the Hainanese Chicken combo. The soup of the day was diluted cream of corn, nasty. And they didn't give us the dinner roll. The Iced Lemon Tea was super sweet. My crispy pork chop was pretty good but the tomato sauce tasted a little weird. I didn't try the Hananese Chicken b/c it didn't look too good. It was whole baby chicken w/ veg and spaghetti. The dinner combo supposed to come w/ dessert. So when we were done w/ the entre, I went to washroom and I expected the dessert to be on the table when I come back. But it didn't. Nobody came by to clean the table so I had ask the guy to clear it up. After that, he gave us the bill. WTH? What about the dessert? So few mins after that, we had to call a lady to give us the dessert. Blah, what a crappy and disappointing experience. The bill came to $30 inc/ tips. So expensive! I wasn't full and I got a stomach ache afterwards too!
I do not recommend this place. Please check out Northern Delicacy next door. It's always good there!!!

Pretty good noodles
Submitted Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - 12:44pm [Dine in]

You can't expect 5 star service at a bbt house esp when it's packed but they do have some decent food. I like their noodle soup (veg, chicken or pork) b/c they're huge and tasty. I recommend you share this bowl w/someone cuz it's huge. As for their drinks, they're average. Can't really taste the tea in the bbt and they're loaded w/ sugar (it's typical). Their stewed pork w/ rice and garlic pork w/ rice is pretty good. They have pretty good veg fried rice but it's swamped w/ oil on the bottom.

I taste no fat
Submitted Wednesday, October 3, 2007 - 12:28am [Dine in]

When I think of Fatburger, I think of a juicy and flavorful beef patty but instead it was just a plain burger, nothing special. There was barely any taste. It seems like I can just buy a patty from Superstore and make one myself. There was no special sauce used. Or maybe it did but I tasted nothing but blandness. I was disappointed, I thought it'll be something incredible but it was just an expensive piece of burger.

Best Wrap, honest!
Submitted Wednesday, October 3, 2007 - 12:16am [Dine in]

You see those shops where they "claim" they have the best wrap in town, I really doubt it. But at Abdul's, I must admit, it is THE BEST and the taste is AUTHENTIC.
Their mixed shawarma wraps is mmm mmm consistently delicious.
One thing I didn't like was that they raised up the price and shrunk the size of the mixed platter. The platter used to be able to feed me and another person. Now he can finish it up all by himself and even have seconds. I was quite disappointed cuz we pay about $10 for it. It's pretty expensive when you think about it.

My favorite Sushi place in Vancouver. Been going there once a week after work. Fresh Salmon Sashimi, yummy rolls (nothing too fancy but it's good) and they have the best Miso Soup. The place is nice and small but the people there have really big hearts. They always greet me with a huge smile and friendly voice. The owner is awesome too, very polite and outgoing. I love it there. I totally recommend this place. The only downside is that they're open till 7:30pm or 8pm.

An American recommended me to this place
Submitted Sunday, September 16, 2007 - 2:08pm [Dine in]

Ok, I'm born here and I've never heard of Vij's before. Am I nuts? Last month when I was in LA airport, a tourist (whose Amercian) was telling me how great Vij's is in Vancouver. He said we'll thank him once we tried it. So...last week we went to try it out. Hm...I think he hyped it a little bit too much for us. I must admit, the service was incredible. Once we sat down, we got our water and menu and then a lady approached us w/ some complimentary fries. Few minutes after that, we were offered fried potatoes. A moment later, we were offered some chai tea which I've never tried before. It was actually pretty good! Other reviewers were right; we were constantly getting our water refilled. I thought that was pretty cool. As for our orders, we ordered 2 spoons of dungess crab to start. I couldn't explain the taste but it was good and had some Indian spice(s) in it. As for entres, we ordered beef tenderloin & chicken breast. The chicken was flavorful, you could tell it was marinated for a long period of time. As for the beef, I only had a bite and I wasn't impressed. My bf thought it was good but we wouldn't go back to Vij's again. The bill + tips came up to $65. I'll stick w/ butter & tandoori chicken next time. Ok ok, I know Vij's is totally different from traditional Indian Restaurants BUT the flavor did not meet my taste, that's all.

After going to this restaurant, I don't understand why it's always so busy. I guess the atmosphere is pretty decent and loungy. All I remember was the food was blah and the service was not the greatest. Maybe they were stereotyping us because we're Asians they think that bad service is acceptable but it's not. Me and a friend did not feel too welcome in that restaurant. I will not return.

What's the Rave w/ Crave?
Submitted Saturday, July 21, 2007 - 6:40pm [Dine in]

Why is everyone talking about Crave? I just don't get it. I ordered this veg sandwich and it was tasteless and dry. We also ordered something else I don't remember cuz it was that bad. Nothing we ordered that was decent. I don't care if the Chef came from a 5 star hotel if the food taste like what a kid could make in his mini kitchen. Blah

Submitted Saturday, July 21, 2007 - 6:33pm [Dine in]

Love this place from the moment it was opened. Their food is consistent and always awesome. Forget about Cactus, just cross the street and come to Capricorn!
I have tried Lasagna w/ garlic bread, 1/2 roast chicken, and different pastas. It's always delicious. The portion size never changes. I hate going to restaurants where their dishes get smaller every time I go, but not this one. It's a keeper.

Voted the Best?
Submitted Saturday, July 21, 2007 - 6:15pm [Dine in]

Their sidewalk sign claimed their restaurant was voted the best 3 yrs in the row. And that was reason why I paid them a visit w/ my bf. It's a nice looking restaurant, warm and welcoming. The poppadom was delicious and fresh. I ordered butter chicken w/ rice & naam. Bf ordered Tandoori chicken w/ rice. The butter chicken was good but had too much of a tomato taste. I like them creamy and flavorful. The rice was yellow and white w/ green peas. I thought that was neat. The Tandoori chicken was moist and spicy. The naam bread was left in the oven a little too long leaving the bottom a crispy and dry. Overall, it was good.

I expected better Gyoza
Submitted Saturday, July 21, 2007 - 6:08pm [Dine in]

What do you think of when you see "Gyoza King"? I expected something unique and varieties of flavor. I expected something cool and exciting. But to my disappointment, their gyoza is not much better than the ones from the frozen section at the supermarket.

This place is known for bad service
Submitted Saturday, July 21, 2007 - 6:01pm [Dine in]

I don't care how good the food can be but if the service is awful then I can not enjoy the meal. Came here w/ a girlfriend and we were quite excited about the place cuz it's quite popular. When we arrived, it was a total disappointment. The service was slower than a turtle and a lot of times we felt invisible. I ordered the miso soup but it tasted like soya sauce. I also ordered this soy milkshake but the glass was so small that I almost burst out laughing. And the taste was diluted. Overal, it was a terrible experience. I saw other people ordering these huge salads and it looked appetizing but I guess that's all they're famous for.

Pretty good Ramen
Submitted Saturday, July 21, 2007 - 5:54pm [Dine in]

I was in Richmond and was kinda craving for Ramen. My friend recommended this restaurant so I gave it a try. Nicely decorated place and packed with people. We only ordered 2 bowls of Ramen and it was quite tasty. The soup base was quite good but that's all I could say about it.

Where's the Cheese?
Submitted Sunday, June 11, 2006 - 12:52pm [Dine in]

I don't understand why ppl were raving about this place. The cheesecake is small, unpresentable and untasteful. It's creamy but I couldn't taste the cheese or anything. I usually love eating the crust of cake, but this one, ehh, I leave it on the side of the plate. Even I can make better ones with the no-bake cake mix.
