Nimby Burger2210 Cornwall, Vancouver
Good value considering the location
Submitted Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 8:04pm [Take-out]

Food: I had the Nimby Burger. Nothing spectacular, and it doesn't really compare to Vera's down the street, but it was by no means bad at all. The bun was soft and fresh, and there was just the right amount of condiments inside.

Service: It wasn't very busy at all, so my order was taken promptly. I waited about 5 minutes for my burger (they cook the patty when you order, I suppose?).

Value: Considering that at $2.49, the price is comparable to a burger at McD's, this place isn't bad at all. Also considering the location (across Kits beach) and its competition (Vera's burgers beginning at $5.99 (?)), this place seems like a pretty good deal.

I hope this place stays! I'll be back!

Food: Ordered the ferrero rocher and creme brulee ice cream on a waffle cone. Outstanding flavours and delicious crunchy waffle cone.

Service: Solid.

Value: $3.75 for two scoops on a waffle cone isn't bad at all considering it's downtown. This place definitely stands out in terms of value (ex. compare it to Qoola).

Ambiance: Solid.

I will DEFINITELY return when I'm in the neighbourhood.

Worth trying out!
Submitted Tuesday, June 1, 2010 - 6:55pm [Dine in]

Food: Mom ordered the beef stew and I ordered the bibambap (not the stone bowl kind). There was hardly any beef in the beef stew... Anyway, I enjoyed the bibambap alot, it was nice and simple, and the sauce added a kick to it. The side dishes were good too.

Service: The server was very friendly. My only complaint is that we waited a few minutes by the entrance before being seated (the server was in the kitchen getting other customers' food).

Value: Both of the items we had were lunch specials, so after tax and tip, it came out to be a little over $15. That's pretty good value in Kitsilano!

Ambiance: The customers behind us were using the grill, and I don't think the fan was on. It made the restaurant a bit smokey. They should work on improving the ventilation.

Overall, it was a great meal and I can't wait to return.

Not recommended.
Submitted Thursday, May 27, 2010 - 7:12pm [Dine in]

Food: I ordered the spicy ramen. I eat spicy foods all the time, but this one was just, really really spicy. I tried the heavy tonkatsu as well - didn't taste heavy at all. It doesn't even come close to comparing with the heavy tonkatsu served at G-men. Furthermore, the noodles were slightly undercooked. I also ordered the chasu onigiri - completely tasteless! No flavour whatsoever.

Service: Good service; water was refilled several times. Very quick.

Value: Very poor value. I know that $7.80 for a bowl of ramen isn't considered expensive, but there was only a few strands of ramen in the bowl. Seriously, a package of instant noodles had more than what was in the bowl. My spicy ramen came with nothing more than the ramen, a few pieces of bamboo shoots, and very little minced meat. I'm not expecting a lot for a $8 dinner in downtown, but the value here was shockingly poor.

Ambiance: Appears to be quite clean.

I would not return due to the lack of quality and value.

Food: Really delicious authentic Japanese cuisine! I love how their miso soup isn't overly salty like most restaurant's. Really fresh sashimi. Great tempura!

Service: Very friendly servers. Food could have come at the same time though...

Value: Pricier than other Japanese restaurants, but nothing outrageous. It's good quality food so it's worth it.

Ambiance: Decent.

Submitted Tuesday, March 9, 2010 - 11:35pm [Dine in]

Food:
There aren't a lot of pho places on the westside, but this is a very very poor comparison to what you can find on the eastside. The broth is severely msg laden, while being very tasteless. There is just wayyy too much msg in everything.

Service:
Friendly waitress, but she disappeared into the backroom for long periods of time.

Value:
Very poor. I ordered the vermicelli, and most vietnamese restaurants give it to you in a large bowl. This place serves it on a plate. Therefore, the serving size is about 3 times less than what is normally expected.

Ambiance:
Old, but clean.

I wouldn't return.

Food: I came here for the lunch buffet and I LOVED the butter chicken and the dessert (some kind of cold noodle in a coconut sauce). There could have been more variety, but the quality was good, so that makes up for it. Only complaint was that everything was cold. The butter chicken, lamb skewers, rice, etc...they were all cold. I'm not quite sure if that's safe...

Service: Solid service. I wonder if they do naan refills though...

Value: $7.95 lunch buffet! Incredible!

Ambiance: Solid.

Food: The only place for hainanese chicken! The soup that comes with the 'regular haiananese chicken with rice' is pretty good too.

Service: Terrible. When we came through the door, the owner(?) by the counter asked 'how many?' and then said 'seat yourself anywhere'. She continued to chat with a coworker while we were clearly waiting for menus. Totally unacceptable.

Value: It's not great, but it's not bad either considering the location.

Ambiance: They have to do something about the cold drafts that come in everytime someone opens the door. It's really quite terrible.

Overall, I'd only come back if I had a desperate hainanese chicken craving.

Food:
special soupless ramen (with cheese/kimchi/egg)<$10>, soup base ramen <$8.5>, takoyaki ($3.5>

The Special Soupless Ramen was a bit too al dente for my taste. It felt like it was a bit undercooked. Interesting combination of cheese, kimchi and egg though.

The Soup Base Ramen with fatty pork was really really rich. The soup was very rich, full of flavour, but no doubt terrible for your health.

Takoyaki wasn't that great. I prefer the kind with the chopped up octopus that Guu has instead of the ones here where there's a chunk of octopus.

Service:
Friendly service. Meals came quickly. I like the self-serve water (they give you a jug of water).

Value:
Not that great. With tax and tip, it was $26 for two people. The portions, while they look small when it arrives at your table, are actually quite filling. However, the cost isn't with par with the quality and ingredients. Considering there's so much competition for restaurants in Richmond, I was disappointed.

Ambiance: Small little place. Very 'authentic japanese' looking. Cute.

I probably won't be back...but it was nice to try it once.

Food:
I ordered the Green Tea with coconut jelly. About half the glass was filled with ice, and the shape of the coconut jelly made it impossible to go up the straw.

Service: Mediocre.

Value: $4 + 50c extra for coconut jelly for a drink that was filled with lots of ice and coconut jelly that was impossible to eat. That's poor value. Even without the ice, the glass wasn't very big.

Ambiance: The floor was exceeding sticky...

I won't be back. There are way better options out there.

Food: I always order the plain hamburger. Even though it just comes with mayo and some special sauce, it's AMAZING. I don't know what they put in it, but the patty is just amazingly flavourful and juicy.

Service: Quick. They give you a receipt with a number on it, and call you when your burger is up. Usually takes no more than 5 minutes at most.

Value: The plain hamburger is $3. It's decent.

Ambiance: It's the SUB...

Honour Roll Sushi Bar, The6138 SUB Boulevard, Vancouver
Satisfies a sushi craving
Submitted Saturday, December 12, 2009 - 4:25pm [Dine in]

Food: Basically massed produced assembly line sushi. It's definitely not authentic, and some rolls are made VERY sloppily, with the fillings spilling out of the rolls. I'm a bit concerned about the cleanliness of the whole place. However, it does satisfy a severe sushi craving. I usually order the chopped scallop roll, it's not cheap, but it's quite tasty.

Service: Depending on when you go, the lines can be long, and they sometimes run out of basics like california roll. The choices are usually quite limited, and the non-sushi items doesn't look too appealing.

Value: Small sushi portions, but similar prices to what you'd find at other typical sushi places. It's decent for UBC I guess.

Ambiance: Crappy SUB atmosphere.

Submitted Saturday, December 12, 2009 - 4:19pm [Dine in]

Food: The usually have no more than two pizzas to choose from when you order, so that kind of sucks. They only bring out fresh pizzas once an entire pizza has been sold, so it sucks to be the person who just bought the last slice of the 'old' pizza.

Value: It's alright at $2.75, portions are big.

Ambiance: Eat outside, the SUB is a terrible place to eat.

I recommend going to the Burger Pit instead. Much better food.

Food: Ordered the lamb burger and the sweet potato fries. The lamb burger was delicious! Nice, big, juicy with 'the works'. I liked the sweet potato fries even more. Good portions

Service: Very friendly server. I know all the burgers are 'made to order', but I was the only other customer at that time and it took over 10 minutes. I can't imagine how long the wait must be during lunchtime!

Value: I had the $10 off birthday coupon, so I ended up only paying $2.60 for my meal. Even without the coupon, I think the prices are ALRIGHT considering that food in that general location is pretty pricey.

Ambiance: Decent, no frills, clean.

Will be back, just for the sweet potato fries though.

Submitted Friday, November 20, 2009 - 10:10pm [Dine in]

Food: It's not realy anything special...just skewers of meat. A beef skewer really is just a beef skewer, which you can get almost anywhere. The only memorable item was the mochi skewer, the cheese mochi in particularly was really good.

Service: Food came in a timely manner, servers were nice.

Value: I know this is supposed to be a tapas restaurant, but I was expecting more ..food. Even Guu, which is a tapas restaurant, has MUCH better value. The skewers here are TINY. The pictures on the menu are blown up, the skewers are actually about 4-5 inches and only about 3/4 of that is meat. The appetizer was the most disappointing. We were enticed by the 'choose 3 appetizers for $5.XX'. There was about two mouthfuls' worth of food. I am not kidding.

Ambiance: Neat little restaurant, seems kind of out of place location-wise though. But, the interior is nevertheless, nice. Has a 'japanese feel' to it.

Compared with Guu, this place fares much worse. Next time I feel like spending money on expensive Japanese tapas, I'll be heading over to Guu. Good one-time experience, won't be back again!

Submitted Wednesday, November 11, 2009 - 11:05pm [Dine in]

Food: Shared a bibambap and a cheese ramen. This was from a food court, but wow, it was better than most Korean restaurants! They serve the bibambap in a stone bowl and you just return it to them afterwards. Very delicious bibambap. The cheese ramen was interesting...basically ramen with a slice of melted processed cheese over top. Doesn't sound too appealing, but it was really really good. The sides were alright. We had kimchi, pickled radish, spicey beansprouts, egg omelette, and potatoes.

Service: Smiling and friendly woman at the cashier. Very patient as I took my time to choose the sides.

Value: Fantastic value! Bibambap + 3 sides came to $7, and the Cheese Ramen + 2 sides was just under $5. How amazing is that?

Ambiance: Food court ambiance.

I will DEFINITELY return. Salivating just thinking of the meal. Mmmmmm...so good.

Food: Had the $2.66 milk tea with pearls. The milk tea was perfect: not too sweet. The pearls were decent, though it could be softer and tastier. I found them a bit too chewy. I found it kind of gross that the syrup was stored in a milk jar...

Service: The person at the cashier made my bbt. Very quick service, which is good.

Value: Where do you find bbt for less than $3??? Amazing!

Ambiance: Food court ambiance.

Food: The food here is amazing! The noodles are all 'pulled' by the chef (he does demonstrations). The 'grandma (here on weekends)' brings out small complimentary appies for everyone. The food is a bit on the oily side, but is acceptable. If it weren't so far away, I would come here more often because the food is really quite amazing

Service: The service is prompt in this family owned business. (After eating there several times, I have concluded that the father is the chef, and the mother and daughter are the waitresses). The staff is very friendly and are willing to accomadate changes in the menu.

Value: Good value! They always gives us complimentary dishes.

Ambiance: This is a very casual restaurant, but I think they could tidy it up a bit. It has 'at home' kind of feeling.

Definitely give it a try!!
