Terrible pizza
Submitted Wednesday, May 20, 2009 - 1:30am [Dine in]

This place looks like a nice alternative to the typical 2 for 1 pizza places you find in Vancouver. Its not. Probably some of the worst pizza I have ever eaten. Bland sauce and rubbery cheese on top of cardboard. Anyone who thinks this tastes good needs to get their head examined.

Only had take out, so can't comment on the restraunt itself. You can get way better pizza in the neighborhood. Sure it is more expensive, but why pay for bad food?

Mostly good BBQ
Submitted Wednesday, April 29, 2009 - 9:44pm [Dine in]

My main complaint is that I find their BBQ sauce to be entirely too sweet with not enough spice to it. If you like sweet BBQ sauce, then this is won't be an issue. It just doesn't do it for me.

Other than that, I found the beef brisket to be moist, tender, and smokey (everything it should be). The pulled pork was pretty good, but I have had better. I liked the coleslaw and beans too.

You order at the counter, but the employees are really friendly and helpful (even letting me sample some dishes when I wasn't sure what I wanted). You can see them prepare your food since it is an open kitchen, and it looks really clean and well maintained.

It was a nice surprise to see that they have a good selection of hard to find Bourbons, but it would be nice if there were some more choices for beer.

I must say that I like this place, but if they added some different styles of BBQ sauce I would love it.

Best Naan and Curries!
Submitted Wednesday, April 29, 2009 - 8:46pm [Dine in]

This is mostly a take-out joint, but they do have some room to sit and eat.

This place is famous for its naan. They almost get insulted if you order your curry with rice instead of naan. All of the curries I have tried were also great, with my favorite being the butter chicken. The food is authentic and spicy, none of that watered down crap.

The guys who work there are always pretty friendly, so even though it is not full service I gave them a 3 on service.

Good food, good cocktails, terrible service
Submitted Wednesday, April 29, 2009 - 8:24pm [Dine in]

I've eaten at Me and Julio about half a dozen times. Regardless of how busy it is, the service has always been terrible. Personally, I like the food enough to come back anyway. However, I know some people that went with me swore they would not go back because of how bad the service was.

The food is not a traditional mexican style, but more of a fusion. I usually get the tacos with shrimp and fish (they let you mix and match). The enchiladas are also pretty good. I was dissapointed that they cheap out on the guacamole (the bottom half of the bowl is black beans) but a lot of restraunts do that.

I usually don't drink cocktails, but I tried one there with coconut milk and strawberry puree (can't remember the name) and it was great.

Best falafel ever!
Submitted Wednesday, April 29, 2009 - 8:11pm [Dine in]

I haven't tried much of the menu, because I always want the falafel. The falafel is always fried fresh right when you order it. Without a doubt, the best falafel I have ever had (and I have had a lot).

This isn't really a restaurant and there are no servers (you just order at the counter) so that is why I put a score of 3 for the service. The lady at the counter is actually really nice and helpful though.

Avoid this place!
Submitted Wednesday, April 29, 2009 - 7:03pm [Dine in]

I went to The Charlatan the other night with some friends for dinner and drinks.

The bar looks impressive when you first walk in, with lots of shiny taps on display. Unfortunately the beer and cocktail selection is terrible. The only decent beers on tap were Guiness (which can be found at most bars these days) and Grolcsh (which didn't taste as good as it does from the bottle). The cocktails were mostly uninspired (I don't know why they list drop shots on the menu) especially considering the obvious attempt to make this place look more like a bar than a restaurant.

The service was equally disappointing. Our waitress came off as a dumb blonde bimbo. She was unable to answer basic questions about the menu, and had a very snotty attitude (but maybe that was just her accent).

Then it got bad. The food took way too long considering it was not that busy and almost all of our dishes were cold, except a salad which was warm and wilted from sitting under heat lamps. The fries were ok, but everything else was mediocre at best.

The worst part came when I had finished my food and went to use the bathroom. On the way to the bathroom I walked by the kitchen, and it looked very run down. The bathroom wreaked of stale urine so badly that I gagged. I encourage anyone reading this review to do some research on this subject, since dinehere.ca has rules against posting anything specific in a review.

I would recommend ANY restaurant on the Commercial Drive over this one, and there are lots.
