Amazing Food, Amazing Service
Submitted Saturday, February 12, 2011 - 12:26pm [Dine in]

My fiance and I dined here for dinner last night and were both blown away by the food and the service and this cozy little restaurant.

FOOD:

Appetizers: Scallop salad with bacon and mushrooms and foie gras - both very good appetizers. We were surprised that the portion wasn't tiny (which is what you might get at a bigger fine dining restaurant). The scallops were nicely cooked and the combination of that with the bacon + mushrooms were delicious. The foie gras was a very generous serving and also very delicious.

Main: Rabbit and Brill which were both on special. Both very well made dishes, very delicious. Just the right portions.

Dessert: Creme Brule + Beignet that had cinnamon sugar drizzle, chocolate syrup dip and a frozen coffee spread. Both very good dishes but the beignet dessert was AMAZING. Sugar, chocolate, and coffee all in one dessert - it doesn't get better than that!

SERVICE:

We were really impressed with the service here. The staff all knew what they were talking about when it came to the menu. Our glasses were always filled with water, we were offered extra bread, the food came in a timely manner, and staff were very friendly.

VALUE:

We were shocked at the value we got for the money we paid. Again, we were expecting fine dining prices and portions but we definitely got our money's worth. To put it in perspective, the day before I went to Boston Pizza and had Potato Skins that were gross for $9 and then had FOIE GRAS at Pied-a-Terre for $12. If i'm not mistaken, all main dishes were under $30. Well worth it for the flavour and portion you get.

AMBIANCE:

It's a very small place so I would suggest making reservations in advance. Even though it was small, it had a very warm and cozy feeling to it, the place was nicely decorated and very clean.

WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK AGAIN & AGAIN!

Great Experience!
Submitted Monday, April 5, 2010 - 10:48am [Dine in]

My bf and i had a completely different experience than what has been described by others here.

Food - The steak was aged well and very tender, the fish was so soft and heavenly and cooking it yourself on the lava stone was a fun experience and you were able to cook your food to your liking.

Service - our glass was ALWAYS full of water, we never had to ask for it. The server was courteous and very knowledgeable about the food and how to cook it.

Value - There was a good range of prices from $20 - $50 entrees, depending on your budget.

Ambiance - View of the water, Cambie & Granvill Bridge, and Granville Island.

Will definitely be back again and again! :)

Feels Like Home!
Submitted Saturday, April 3, 2010 - 9:10am [Dine in]

I know Little Ongpin started out on a rough note but they have made quite the 360 change since they opened. The service is much, much faster and the food is outstanding! I did notice when they first opened that the food was a little on the oily side but I have definitely seen the change. My favourites are the sisig, inihaw na pusit, and the bagoong rice (must try!). I'll definitely be back again and again! :)

Great View, Awesome Steak!
Submitted Saturday, April 3, 2010 - 9:05am [Dine in]

The great dining experience started as soon as we walked into the door and we were greeted by two friendly people (one that looked like the manager). We requested for a table by the window so we could get the nice view and that request was honored. Our waiter was very friendly and conversational with us and it was obvious he was knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered the Beef Tenderloin and asked for it well done and i have to say, it was the best well done steak i've ever had! The steak was crispy but not burnt on the outside and still tender on the inside. Perfect. Thank you for a lovely dining experience, i've already told friends and family about your restaurant as soon as I left. I'll definitely be back :)

Food is always fresh!
Submitted Thursday, January 14, 2010 - 12:45pm [Dine in]

The ambiance isn't that great and there are usually wait times to be seated during peak hours but who goes there for the ambiance anyway?! The food is outstanding, always fresh and very filling! They are not stingy with their portions at all. The lunch special bento box for only $7.99 is very very filing = great value for your money! Will definitely be back again and again!

I love coming to this cozy little restaurant as you are always greeted with a friendly smile and seated immediately. The value for money is great as two people can get full with a totaly order of about $25. They also have lunch specials for about $6.99 which is very filling! In the 10+ times I have been here, the food has always been yummy, the waits have never been long, and the experience always pleasant. It's also nice to come in the summer because you can sit outside overlooking the water. :) Try their Tom Yam soup!

First impression when I walked in... "wow, this place smells funny"

As soon as I sat down, the friends I met up with said "why did we pick this place? it got such bad reviews!" but i thought "how bad can it really be...?"

Boy, was I wrong.

I ordered the chicken tacos and first of all, the chicken was as dry as dry can be. Secondly, they used coleslaw salad (without the sauce) to accompany the chicken. WHAT? I've never had a taco that had salad before and to make it worse, the salad was gross and wilted. Normally, if food is mediocre, i will still eat it cus i paid for it and i'm hungry but i didn't even finish this. I ate the fries and few pieces of chicken and my stomach couldn't take anymore.

Please... don't waste your time, your money, and your appetite on Sammy J Peppers.

Submitted Monday, May 11, 2009 - 1:33pm [Dine in]

I visited this cozy little place on Kingsway and had a nice experience! I ordered the lemon grass chicken dish which you can't go wrong with but theirs was sprinkled with dried garlic which added a little extra kick to it. All of the other rice dishes that were ordered also had garlic on top of it (something to note if you're not a garlic kinda person) Service was quick and courteous, I will probably return if i'm in the area.

Food was WOW
Submitted Monday, May 11, 2009 - 1:30pm [Dine in]

Because this place is so good, it was packed the first time we went and that was on a Wednesday evening. Because of that, we had to sit at the bar. Like Guu, it is very loud but I found it enjoyable to listen to the language and observe their culture. The food was outstanding, especially the carpaccio! They also put an interesting spin on things like the calamari that came with salsa, it was surprisingly REALLY good. Basically, everything we had at that place was amazing. Definitely a place to check out!

Does not taste authentic at all
Submitted Monday, May 11, 2009 - 1:20pm [Dine in]

The cornbread tasted old – you can taste the difference between cornbread that is fresh out of the oven and cornbread that has been sitting for the whole day. I ordered the Corncrusted Trout with Mango Chipotle. The fish was dry and tasteless, not impressed at all for $18. A friend ordered the Jambalaya but it was WAY too spicy for anyone to enjoy. When we asked her if it was supposed to be that spicy, she said that “it may have been from a different batch” which screams inconsistency. I probably won’t return.

Great Experience!
Submitted Monday, May 11, 2009 - 1:16pm [Dine in]

We decided to give this place a try on a Friday night as a friend who had a great experience, recommended it to us. I’m happy to say that we had a GREAT experience.

Ambience – really cozy, modern looking place with paintings from local artists. Warning: the bathroom tap is really cool but confusing to use at first. You will find yourself standing in front of the sink and staring for at least 3 seconds as you try to figure it out. Haha!

Service – fast and courteous service, we were greeted with a smile from the moment we stepped in

Food – I ordered the Galbi which was excellent. It was a very generous amount of short ribs on a sizzling plate with a side of rice and of course your usual complimentary sides of kimchi and veggies.

Value – Very good value for your money, with taxes and tip, my meal came to $15 and for those of you who have dined in downtown Vancouver, you’d know that that’s a pretty good deal.

Your typical BBT place...
Submitted Friday, March 13, 2009 - 1:56pm [Dine in]

The food is very simliar to what you would find at other BBT places...I usually get the taiwanese style chicken nuggets which you can't go wrong with. The $8.95 combos that i've had come with rice, a small appetizer (ex.a small slice of omelet) and dessert. The service has always been quick and courteous, mind you, i've never been on a busy weekend, usually just on a weeknight. The ambiance is quite impressive, especially in their washroom. It is very nicely decorated and always clean, the best part is, they have sounds of chirping birds to enjoy while you're taking care of business. haha! Overall - Nice, casual place to hang out with friends and enjoy good bbt/food.

Good Food, Very Long Wait Time
Submitted Friday, March 13, 2009 - 1:42pm [Dine in]

Food: I really enjoyed the food. The xiu long bao is great and you get stamps on a stamp card for each order! The different preparations of tofu and bean curd were also very enjoyable.

Service: Service was "solid". They weren't rude/abrupt like you would find at most asian restaurants. The only problem we encountered was that our food took SO long to arrive. We would get each dish one at a time with about 15 - 20 minutes gap in between.

Value Rating: Good Value for your money. For example we got a plate of fried rice for $7.95, main dishes were about $8 - 9, and appies started at around $3.50.

Ambiance: Very modern and cozy. The whole kitchen is visible to you as it is only covered by glass windows.

I'll be back! :)

Too Salty
Submitted Sunday, February 15, 2009 - 10:56pm [Dine in]

Food: We decided to try this place out for Valentines day because of all the great reviews on dinehere. The food was good but not great, I find that Joe Forte's & Hy's steaks are better. The food was too salty from the potatoes, to the steak, even to the vegetables!

Service: Our service was courteous, kind but not trying too hard. The manager came and asked us how our meal was which I found kind of random, but maybe because we havn't experienced any other restaurant doing that.

Value: You do get a decent portion for the price you pay for, you don't get the "find dining" portion of 2 bites.

Ambiance: Really warm ambiance although I found that this "tunnel" that people have been talking about was hyped up too much that when we saw it, it wasn't anything amazing.

Overall, I might go back....maybe to try the fish.

Your Typical AYCE
Submitted Tuesday, February 3, 2009 - 7:57pm [Dine in]

I've been here a few times and its the usual AYCE experience, maybe because the same guy owns Richmond Sushi, TopGun Sushi, and probably some others! Last time I went there was with a party of 10, the service was quick and they didn't rip us off on the amount ordered like most places do. They could probably tell that we weren't wasting anything so they gave us the right amount. Nothing major to complain about....except maybe the sticky washroom floors.

Ok for the price you pay
Submitted Tuesday, February 3, 2009 - 7:50pm [Dine in]

Been here twice for the late night AYCE for $12.95. First time, we went just before 9:30 but didn't get seated until 10PM because it was so busy, the second time we went early at 8:45 and got seated right away. The dinner menu was very limited, which is fine, since we went for the meat anyway. The service was okay, what you would typically expect from an Asian restaurant. I found that the ladies weren't so attentive, some didn't even speak english. We got the same waiter twice, the asian guy with the short hair and ponytail, he was pretty friendly. The only major problem was that the grills were too small, you had to cram everything in there and when you're hungry, its not fun!

good food, very poor service, do not go if really hungry
Submitted Saturday, November 29, 2008 - 7:54pm [Dine in]

The night started well, we were the first ones in and we received our appetizer and bread promptly then it was downhill from there. We waited exactly one hour for our main entrees and when we got them it was literally 4 bites per entrée which makes it even worse that we waited one hour for it...hence my title, do not go if you are really hungry. It was about $16 for each dish enough for 4 bites.

The reason my family and I went there was to celebrate my dads birthday. I made this clear upon making the reservation and arranged for a surprise dessert to arrive after our meal. It never came. Before leaving I spoke with someone I assume is the manager only to find out that they never took note of my request and he tried to justify it by saying they had 130 ppl coming in that night.

For a high class restaurant, you would expect a much higher level of service.

The sisig here is to die for! You have to go mid-week though because if you go during the weekends, its likely that they're run out already. It's that good! Everything else I have tried is great as well like their Bicol Express, Pusit, etc.

Long wait
Submitted Saturday, February 2, 2008 - 5:27pm [Dine in]

We had to wait about 45 minutes for our food to arrive and the waitresses explaination was "It's just that when its a full house, it gets a little busy and the chef's have to make the sauces from scratch". First of all, the chefs and the waiters were just standing around from what we saw, and secondly, the restaurant wasn't even half full.

The food was mediocre, I was expecting better. Don't go unless you are willing to wait 40-60 minutes (and this is during SLOW period) for your food.

Not a place for anniversaries
Submitted Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - 5:51pm [Dine in]

My boyfriend and I went there for our anniversary. A friend of mine was kind enough to make the reservation for us and asked for a really nice view since we were celebrating our anniversary. They told her they would take care of it and that "it is their priority". We got there expecting a really nice table by the window, we ended up in a table upstairs close to the washroom, no view at all. It's not like it was super busy and they couldn't find a nice table for us, there was an empty table right by the window close to where we were!

The food and the service was so-so, I was expecting better from a place that I have heard good reviews about. I probably wouldn't go back...
