Sailor Hagar's Brew Pub86 Semisch Avenue, North Vancouver
Could Be Better.
Submitted Friday, June 29, 2012 - 11:35am [Dine in]

Not living in North Van, we don't get to go to Sailor Hagar's that often, but it's usually a pleasant experience when we do. The place is large and seems quite popular with the locals.

They double as a brew pub, so they have a decent selection of their own beer on tap, which is typically quite good. They also have a large selection of imported beer on tap.

The food is typically quite good. We've seen several incarnations of the menu in the last few years, and most of what we've tried turned out quite well. The portions are large and flavorful. Their specials on the weekends are great value for money.

So what could be better then? Service, unfortunately, is hit and miss. Depending on who ends up waiting on your table you could be receiving stellar service (from the lady working the bar- probably the owner) or extremely poor service. One time while seating on the patio we ordered a second round of beer as our empty glasses were taken away and food brought to the table. We didn't see our second round until we were done eating, some 20 minutes later, and that only after reminding the waitress.

Despite the service issues though, the place is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Wicklow, The610 Stamps Landing, Vancouver
Great Spot for Drinks and Food.
Submitted Friday, June 29, 2012 - 11:20am [Dine in]

The Wicklow is a great place on the water for drinks and food. It's also quite good if you want to watch the game. They have a large patio which seems to be a hit during the summer months.

The ambiance is nice and relaxed and the servers are friendly and efficient. Their selection of beer is decent, with a few rotating taps every season. Food is actually quite good for a pub, and so is the value. Their Sunday-Monday steak and prawns dinner special is a great reason to pop in, and their fish and chips are some of the best I've ever had outside of a fish and chips place.

Overall, it's a great spot to be when you've taken a nice walk by the water and feel like a few drinks and a bite.

Cheshire Cheese Inn4585 Dunbar, Vancouver
Nice English Pub.
Submitted Friday, June 29, 2012 - 11:06am [Dine in]

We've been going to the Cheshire for a few months now, as often as once a week. It's a very pleasant, authentic looking English pub. The ambiance is what you'd expect of an English pub, with a bit of sports bar flavour thrown in (big TVs, but nothing too loud or intrusive).

They have the usual suspects for drinks (nice selection of beer), and good specials on weekends and holidays. Food is very good, with English favourites such as liver and onions and bangers and mash being executed quite well for a pub. Their daily dinner specials are also very good, both in terms of quality and value for money.

Overall, it's a solid pub with some good eats and a good authentic English vibe.

Service? What Service?
Submitted Friday, June 29, 2012 - 10:58am [Dine in]

This is the last of several attempts to enjoy a drink and bite at Barney's on Granville St. Walked in on a Monday afternoon, place was mostly empty and the waiting staff was having what looked like quite a good time hanging behind the bar. They saw us (husband and I) walk in and greeted us, but that was the last we saw of them.

20 minutes later, we got up from our table and walked out the door, having received no service whatsoever, despite the staff having obviously noticed us walking in. There was no acknowledgment of our presence or departure whatsoever, the waitresses still deep in their private fun session. They were behind the bar the entire time we sat down waiting, and were so engaged in their conversation, they hardly noticed us walking out.

The place looked pretty run down and filthy, with several flies hovering around the dirty tables.
