Nice improvement from a 7-11
Submitted Monday, October 8, 2012 - 11:48am [Dine in]

Went here with the family the other weekend. Sat in the booth at first, but soon realized that the little ones are better off in a high chair as one of them fell off the booth seat. Mentioned this to the young asian waitress and I could see she did not care and just rolled her eyes. So I went to a more competent waitress and she seated us at a table and provided us with some highchairs. We then ordered salad rolls, 2 noodles with soup and one fried noodles dishes. The salad roll , the 2 noodle dishes and the fried noodles came out promptly. Actually a little too fast as it seem they had it already for the lunch crowd. The soup broth was ok. Had much better elsewhere. The meal was just satisfactory. There was something about the meal that made me feel the food was very process/not home made. The ambiance was nice compare to what it was before (7-11). The parking can be crowded. But overall I would venture elsewhere as there are so many better vietnamese restaurant within the area than this one.

Been transported back to the 80's
Submitted Sunday, August 12, 2012 - 1:40pm [Dine in]

Went here for a quick dinner after running some errands. Used the entertainment coupon and thank goodness we did. We ordered the onion rings, calamari platter and the special was $1.49/ taco which we ordered 4 (2 soft shell and 2 hard shell). Well the calamari was a bit overcooked and tasted more of the batter than any squid. The onion rings were good. The tacos were nothing to rave about. They tasted like some you would make at home when you ran out of real food. The ambiance was dated. It looked like they have not done anything to the place since the 80's. The service was very good. The waitresses were tentative and friendly. It was a satisfactory experience. I would not venture back anytime soon as there are a lot of better and more modern pubs out there.

Mistaken food to be asian...lol
Submitted Thursday, July 26, 2012 - 1:46pm [Dine in]

Went here for a bite to eat before the Price is Right show and what a mistake. I chose the beef brisket with rice and what a mistake that was. It is a poor excuse for Asian food in this food court. Not only is it overpriced for what you get, it was bland and small. I wish we went outside of this area and found a real Asian restaurant. I would not eat the Asian food there again and would try something like the burgers instead...if it came to that. I would not recommend the Asian food as there are far better places in that area for much cheaper.

Went here with a local newspaper coupon
Submitted Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 7:25pm [Dine in]

Went here with the family for a Saturday lunch. They had the ALL-U-CAN-EAT buffet available. I received earlier a coupon for the buffet which takes off $3 from the $11.99 for one person. Thus one person pays regular price and the other pays the $8.99. We have two little ones which were free. The selection was modest, but at least it was hot and fresh. The had the regular Indian food like butter chicken. The had some interesting different dishes like Chilli chicken which I did not try as I was not in the mood for hot food. The had goat curry which was tasty and fresh. The butter chicken was satisfactory. It was not the best nor the worst I have tried. The service was attentive and gave us a pitcher of water for our table but they only had one high chair in the whole restaurant. So if you plan to eat here, and have small children and require a booster seats or high chair, be aware that there is only one. The decor is nice, a little dark for the furniture but new and clean. There is a large sky light that basically takes up the entire roof of the restaurant. Overall I was satisfy with this dining experience.

My second visit this pub and it was definitely better than the first
Submitted Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 7:17pm [Dine in]

Went here with the better half and some of the coworkers. My first time experience was not so good. The food was expensive for what you got and the service was a hit and miss. This second time around fare better. The service was good at first but as the night went and as it gotten busier you hardly saw your server. I ordered the Steak sandwich 8oz and it was pretty good. It came blue rare the way I liked it and I had potato soup as the side. It did not look that big but it was satisfying. My better half ordered the Turkey Club sandwich and she mentioned that it was good as well. My coworkers ordered the banger and mash, stew and meat pies (traditional pub fare) and it look tasty but there did not seem very much for the price you pay. I thought the $14 for a steak sandwich and the trimmings was a bit high. Same goes for the Turkey sandwich. It was not overly loud and we had a great time. Would return when we are in the neighborhood.

Good dim sum but the price has gone up
Submitted Tuesday, June 19, 2012 - 9:38am [Dine in]

Went here for Father's day dim sum lunch. The restaurant was quite full but had to only wait for 10 mins. We were seated in the corner which was perfect for the children. We ordered the usually fare which were shrimp dumpling, pork dumpling, beef balls, Bar-b-q pork pastries, Bar-b-q pork buns, beef tripe etc. The service was efficient and the food came out hot and fresh. The carts were frequent at first and then after 30 mins it stopped. I guess they had to refill the carts, but the waitress came up to ask on numerous occassions to ask if we wanted to order anything specific. The only donwside is that the price for dim sum per dish has gone up to $3.25. They used to be $2.50. But I guess with inflation they had to raise the price. Overall the dining experience was enjoyable and I would return when I am craving for some dim sum.

Poor communication on their part
Submitted Tuesday, June 19, 2012 - 8:59am [Dine in]

Went here for a Father's day dim sum lunch. At the front counter area I approached the hottess and asked how long of a wait for a table. She asked how many people and I told her 4 adults and 2 children. She said in a moment. So I told the rest of my group that they should unload via text and they started to come. When they all arrived which was around 3 mins, another host stated that they have no room and that the wait will be at least 30 mins. I mentioned that I talked to the hostess and she said in a moment. He said that it will be 30 mins or more and there is nothing he can do. They have poor communication between the staff. She should have asked the other staff to clarify if they had room before I had the family come in. Was not impressed with their customer service. Will not be returning to this restaurant.

Great restaurant for the family especially the kids
Submitted Sunday, June 17, 2012 - 9:28am [Dine in]

Went here with another family after an afternoon of indoor play center for the kids. My better half order the California Chicken burger with fries and she always loves this burger. I ordered the Prime Rib Dip with French Onion Soup for my side. It tasted pretty good but since I have a large appetite I wished I had more. So I had to dine on some of my better half's bottomless french fries. The kids shared a mac and cheese meal with apple slice and chocolate milk. The kitchen was nice enough to have prepare two separate bowls which had fresh cheese melted on top. They also had two sets of apple slices and chocolate milk for the kids. They gave the kids crayons and paper to draw on and was nice enough to give them balloons as the little ones adore balloons. I really appreciate that the staff are tune with their guest as they topped up my freckle lemonade when it was low and refilled the fries when asked. This is a great restaurant for the family especially if you have kids. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Belated Anniversary Dinner
Submitted Monday, June 11, 2012 - 11:06am [Dine in]

Upon reading the reviews and referrals from friends, we decided to celebrate our belated anniversary at Old Surrey. We made reservation at 5:30pm and advised them that this was an anniversary dinner. They had a pre-set menu which consist of an appetizer, main course and dessert for $35 which sound interesting enough. We had an entertainment coupon that we wanted to use and ask the waiter if we could have the pre-set dinner and a main course and have the discount on the main course, as we have done this at other restaurants without issue. Unfortunately they do not allow this. So we opted to have 2 main courses. My better half had the beef tenderloin that came along with deep fried mash potatoes and seasonal greens for $28 and I had the Seafood medoly which had halibut, 2 mussels, 2 jumbo prawns, 2 scallops, a lobster tail, deep fried mash potatoes and seasonal greens for $27. My better half enjoyed her meal and I had some bites from it as well. It was tasty and well presented. My meal was delicious but I found the portions to be on the smaller side. But it was to be expected as seafood is considered on the expensive side. Upon paying, I presented the entertainment coupon. I found it funny that the coupon stated enjoy one complientary dinner when another one is bought up to $21. The least expensive main course was $27. Overall I enjoyed my dining experience at Old Surrey. I wished they would have done or offer something special as it was out anniversary but apparently they do nothing of the sort. I would return back only for special occassions and with the entertainment book as it is a little pricey for what you get.

Decent japanese food in Surrey
Submitted Wednesday, June 6, 2012 - 9:54pm [Dine in]

Went here with the whole family the other night. From what I read from other dinehere critics, I expected more. We had the sushi combo which consist of salmon, tuna, prawn sushi along with regular salmon sushi with seaweed wrapped around it, plus California rolls. We also ordered the bento box which consist of ebi sumomono, chicken teryaki, vegie and prawn tempura, rice, and some dynamite rolls. There was also some miso soup that was offered. In my opinion the food was decent. Nothing that warrants me to rush back. My better half was not impressed as she stated that the rice tasted old and the fish not as fresh as other places. She also commented the the chicken in the teryaki was on the fatter side. This sushi experience was not the best but not the worst either. The prices are fair and the service was pretty good considering we were the only people there. I would return to get my sushi fix in a tight situation, but this restaurant would not be my first choice.

Submitted Wednesday, May 9, 2012 - 8:11pm [Dine in]

Went here with the family for the first time. Try to come earlier but they were closed for renos. Finally I had the chance to try their famous butter beef and their fried chicken legs and wings. We also ordered the fried rice as well. The butter beef was tasty but the hype made me expect more from it. The fried chicken was delicious. Perfect amount of seasoning and crunchiness. The fried rice was well prepared. The price is a little pricey for what you get but I heard so many great reviews that I had to try it for myself. I am glad that I did, but I would not go out of my way for it as it is a pain to find parking in Chinatown. If I ever crave the fried chicken, I would definitely return, but I probably forgo the butter beef and try something else.

Went for the AYCE , small selection but reasonable price
Submitted Wednesday, May 9, 2012 - 8:02pm [Dine in]

Went here with the family and a friend and her son. We all had the all-you-can-eat except for my friend's son. He had some fish pakora. The all-you-can-eat selection was small to say the least. For the salad side there was garden salad and dressing but when you come to an Indian restaurant you usually go for the tasty meat dishes with high calories sauces. There was tandoori chicken, butter chicken and curry chicken and then there were the cauliflower in curry and a few more non-meat indian dishes. When you look at the buffet it does not look that great in selection. The naan was usually gone and you had to wait 15 minutes for them to replenish the container. The food tasted pretty good considering it was AYCE. I had better at other indian restaurant but for $10.99/person I am not complaining. So if you enjoy the common favorites indian dishes, and want to have AYCE, then this is a decent place for that. But if you want something more unique, then I suggest you order off the menu or go elsewhere.

Very tasty food but location could have been better
Submitted Sunday, April 15, 2012 - 6:04am [Dine in]

Went there with the better half for a early dinner. We both ordered the Goa Curry with Prawns and Butter chicken and clementa (similar to a torritia shell). Both dishes came with white rice. At first there seem very little food for the price tag. But once you start to eat you start to fill up. The tast was very good. I was impressed with the flavour. It is definitely not the cheapest Indian restaurant but I was not disappointed. The location could be better as it was tucked away on King George Highway. We used the Entertainment book coupon and that reduce the sting of the price overall. I would recommend this restaurant for the taste and service. But the price is little over the norm for an indian restaurant.

Service sucks but the food was ok
Submitted Thursday, April 12, 2012 - 1:21pm [Dine in]

Went here with a friend for lunch on a Friday. The pub was quiet with only a handful of patrons. My buddy ordered the Club sandwich with fries and I ordered the Roast Beef sandwich. The food came out prompt and the portions were large. My buddy said that is sandwich was okay. My Roast Beef sandwich with caesar salad was satisfactory. My only gripe with the food was there was too many peppercorn in the beef sandwich. My problem was with the service. Granted there was only one server, there were only 7 customers including us. Not once did she check up on us or offer a refill on water. Once she served us, we were on our own. We try to flag her down but to no avail. So after we finished, we had an entertainment coupon to use. She came back with the bill but did not take off the full amount allotted by the coupon. She was $2 short. Not a big deal but considering the service that we did not received, we brought this to our server's attention. The server stated that is the way it is. Rather than argue over a few dollars, we paid our bill and left. My gripe is that this pub advertises and uses the Entertainment book yet when customers uses it, they feel that they do not have to honor the coupon. Then why do they bother being in the Entertainment book anyways. This experience put a sour taste in my mouth kind of like the service there. Would rather venture to another pub than return back to this place.

Great looking place but the food does not match
Submitted Thursday, April 12, 2012 - 1:10pm [Dine in]

Went here for a relaxing night out with the better half. We did not see anything particular that we wanted to eat so we settled for the Sampler Appies and the daily special of pulled pork sandwich. The sampler had a little of everything, from calamari, spring rolls, break sticks, chicken tenders, chicken wings, rib bits and some vegies. The spring roll was gross, the rest of the sampler plater was satisfactory. The calamari was rubbery at times. We also ordered the pulled pork sandwich which was ok for the first few bites, then it became too tangy and was nothing special. It was quite small for the price. Better half had a drink and the totaled bill was over $50.. In my opinion, the value was not there as the food was borderline satisfactory. The service was good for the most part. But waiting for the bill took over 15 minutes. I would recommend Moxie for drinks and lite snacks but that would be it.

Meh.....nothing special about the Special
Submitted Monday, March 12, 2012 - 9:03am [Dine in]

Went here with the family. Was greeted promptly as we were their first customer of the day for lunch. My better half and I ordered the Special which consist of pull pork sandwich with sausages and soup of the day. Which was a brisket broth with vegetables. A bit too salty but tasty. The pull pork sandwich was just ok. I had tasted much better. The soup came in a very small bowl which I thought was a joke at first. There was no other "fixings". I thought you would get some baked beans and cole slaw like the other sandwiches but I guess it was the special you get soup instead. The special cost $10.95 each. In my opinion it was way overpriced for what you gotten. Left still hungry. Was disappointed as I read the rave reviews. This is the third time I ventured to this franchise, and I have concluded that this is Bar-B-Q cooking without the "soul" .

Huge sub sandwiches with a gest of humour
Submitted Monday, February 27, 2012 - 10:37am [Take-out]

Came here to pick-up a couple of subs to go. The sandwich nazi was on top of his stand-up comedy act. I no longer ask for a type of sandwich as I trust that he will make the largest and most tastiest sandwich possible. His crude banter can be heard throughout the store and his welcoming comments to new customers is an earful. He asked if I wanted white bum or brown bum referring to his bread. Do not come here if you get easily offended and can not take a joke. Paid almost $8/sub and worth every penny. Think each sub weighs as much as a small baby. Will come back again.

The food was good but the service is something else
Submitted Monday, February 27, 2012 - 9:59am [Dine in]

Went here with a friend for a belated birthday dinner. We ordered like kings and had a little of everything. The waitress was non-attentative and we had to flag our waitress down in order to get our order in. The food came out and it tasted all pretty good. Then again we were starving and at that time.....anything would have tasted good. Overall the presentation was good and the sushi and Korean bar-b-q was good. Now the service must have a change over, but it was non-existent. We had to several times hunt down a waitress to get our orderes out. The little bar-b-q at the center off our table was starting to smoke and we had to turn it off as it was getting bad, yet no one came to assist us. The booth next to us had the same problem but it was much worse as they had to re-locate to another booth as there was an "accident" at their previous booth. Overall I would come back for the food but not the service.

Went here with the better half and the kids. They just finished serving a large party (probably from a wedding) that took up over half of the restaurant. The waitress was attentative and was able to get us a couple of high chairs for the kids. We ordered the salad roll for starter and that was large and delicious. Just wished we had a tad more peanut sauce. Then I ordered the large house special pho and my better half ordered the regular well done beef flank in pho and we also ordered the fried beef with rice noodles for the kids. The pho came out hot and tasty. The large was quite a bit of food. I found the broth done well and plentiful as I am a huge eater. The beef with rice noodles was also done very well. The deocr was updated and it looks great especially for a pho restaurant. Much better than it was before. I was very impressed with the updates, service and most of all the food. Will patronized again in the near future.
