Christine's Cafe1130 W Pender Street, #105, Vancouver
One of Downtown Vancouver's Best Kept Secrets
Submitted Monday, October 15, 2007 - 1:29am [Dine in]

This cafe is hidden in the courtyard of the highrise park just on the other side of Thurlow Street from the Bental Centre block, so it's almost impossible to notice unless you're told about it. I only found out about it because I used to have an office that looked right down on it.

The special menu items (there's daily specials and a standard specials menu) are almost always excellent. The only complaint to be made is that the portions can be rather small depending on the meal, but that's the commercial district for you. The regular item meals (mostly sandwiches, cold and hot) can be hit and miss. Specials are always $7.95, so after adding in a drink, you're running about $10.

The management is always friendly and willing to accomodate you, but not necessarially very chatty with the exception of one girl (I think the most of them are uncomfortable with the English language), although they seem hesitant to accomodate unconventional orders.

Two Parrots Perch & Grill1202 Granville Street, Vancouver
Great Wings, Loud Noise
Submitted Monday, October 15, 2007 - 1:16am [Dine in]

I haven't gone over the menu in any detail, and I'm usually already drunk by the time I go in, but from my experience it's pretty standard bar & grill fare. The wings, however, are sublime, and I often wind up ordering that and getting sidetracked from actually drinking.

I've also only gone on Saturday nights, and the music is insanely loud. No live band or anything, but trying to have a conversation with someone really is trying.
