Spice Up has big shoes to fill, as it occupies the former home of Legendary Noodle, a neighbourhood favorite. The sweet young couple behind Spice Up have a lot on their side, though. They are earnest and keen to hear feedback on their new venture. They seemed to take great pride in not cutting corners on quality and they tell me they hand-select all their spices, and create the food in small batches. I ordered out for my family of four (although they do have a small cute eat-in space. The butter chicken was delicious. I will double order next time - I think the serving was designed for two, not four. The Aaloo Matar (potatoes and peas) was absolutely excellent. The potatoes had a lovely texture, wondering if they were oven baked before going in the sauce. Rice with saffron and peas good too. We also ordered the vegetable samosas. They were quite spicy and the pastry deep fried coating yummy. I was a bit surprised they contained mostly potato, as opposed to a mixture of veg. So as long as you are in the mood for spicy potato, you're set. Next time we will try eating in. This is a good fit for the Main Street neighbourhood.
Everything is as it should be and what you would expect for a family greek place. Kinda cute, too. The chicken souvlaki dinner is plentiful and the chicken is really tasty. The tzatsiki is nice, and so is the potato, although I thought they could throw in more than one half per meal. We did take out, but will probably go for sit down meal next time. Good for family, or a low-key quick outing for a couple.
Just finished eating dinner with gal pals tonight. Great place. I think they should ditch the British pub descriptor...I wasn't going to try this place until I did an eyeball of the place. It's got a warm, funky atmosphere, really nice wine and beer choices, and a very solid menu. I had the vegetarian Wellington, very nice (a little to much side squash dish, but oh well...). Good spot for supper, good spot for drinks.
This is a regular for me and the kids (the Main St. Location). It's great to watch the noodle-making, the pork dumpling soup with noodles is outstanding, as are the pea shoots, it's inexpensive and staff are fast and friendly. What more could you want for a quick bite?
My family and I went to Shashuka last week, on a weekday evening around 6:30 pm. We all had the gelato - every flavour was lovely.
We also took a "to go" container with four salads. These are what blew me away. I'll talk about them in order of preference, but I don't know their names. The yam and feta was insanely good and different. The eggplant mixture was spicey and complex. The bean and the ratatouille tied for 3rd place - both very yummy. I heated them slightly before serving. Very impressed, amazing price.
The staff was smart, sexy and savvy.
We didn't order off the menu, so I can't speak to that.
If the people in the area want to see a really special place survive and thrive in an evolving neighbourhood, it's worth at least a try. Think back to some of your favorite spots (ie Barefoot Contessa or Locus restaurant on Main for instance) - they had growing pains, and so will Shashuka so be brave and give them your feedback so it can evolve. Thanks for reading my two little cents.
I am glad we visited here, because I've never been and the location is fascinating. Ambience in the restaurant is great.
Food is really, really substandard, especially with those prices (not to mention the mark up on the wine...a 14.99 bottle of Pepperwood was $50.00 ouch).
My brother in law, who was visiting from Ontario was actually trying to be kind when he said the salmon wellington was a bit better than President's Choice! I had it too, and they should just take it off the menu. Everything is very 1980's...they MUST update their cooking practises. "Grilled" vegetables were sometimes watery and steamed. The lobster bisque was like a thick gravy, although tasty.
If you go there, order the special...hopefully the chefs are more inspired in those creations.
Good luck, Cannery. I won't be back until I hear you have new chefs and/or a new menu.
Honest gal
Just tried Duffin's Fritou chicken and fries - I needed to supply a large crowd. Both were excellent. Chicken coating was tasty, meat full and not fatty. Fries had some really tasty coating too.
The gravy and coleslaw that came with it went straight to the trash, however...disgusting.
All in all, great price, great food if you need a high calorie fix on a tight budget.
