An excellent little café

I was eagerly anticipating a visit to Matchstick. I was not disappointed. The smoked meat sandwich was very good, but I was much more interested in the coffee. I'd gladly drive back in to Vancouver for another cup. It was a fantastic brew. Love the pour over Chemex/Koava filter method - great roast (currently serving Phil + Sebastian outvoc Calgary while they get their own roaster up and running), great brew, great cup of coffee. A trip to Matchstick will not disappoint, and a seat a their long wooden table is worth the visit. Annie, Spencer and company have a good thing going. Looking forward to their first batch of house roasted beans. I'll be there, don't worry.

It's too bad that what was once a favourite restaurant isn't anymore. No major complaints about the food, aside from some menu items not being served, but the customer service leaves much to be desired. I'm not one to begrudge a restaurant wanting to close when it's late, but I'm not sure 9:30 pm on a Sunday night counts. After a nice meal, several bottles of wine (incl. appetizers and dessert), our party of 5 was asked to leave in rather blunt and obvious non-verbal cues. (What else would you call turning off the music and putting the restaurant into silence?) I would have been okay with a polite verbal request that the place would be closing shortly, but to be made to feel that you must go and aren't welcome is unacceptable. At least let your guests finish the last bit of wine. That's not so much to ask. We got the hint and left, but follow-up to my complaint the next day simply reinforced the fact that customer service isn't a priority for the owner and serving staff. What a shame. Past meals at this restaurant were enjoyable. That's why we came back several more times. But not anymore. Value your customers and they'll come back. Don't and they'll let others know.
