Great view, service. Average food.

You can't do much better than the outstanding view and outstanding service. The food however, isn't quite there. They aim to do fine dining, and that's what you are paying for, but the plates are not balanced right. When I pay for fine dining, I would hope that the dish is put together really well. Unfortunately when we went here, there was like too much butter, oil, or something else on the plate that just meant it wasn't up to spec for a fine dining establishment. Having said that, I'd probably give it a second chance sometime in the future when I'm not sure where else to go.

Anton's Pasta Bar4260 E Hastings Street, Burnaby
Distinctly average
Submitted Sunday, November 13, 2011 - 12:56pm [Dine in]

Why is this place so popular?

I'm guessing it is because there is so much food that you always take some home. But the quality is very average.

I met an Italian guy at work recently. He knows the owner, but even he says that the food is not Italian.

I have no idea why anyone would line up to go here. I only went in when there was no line up so wasn't worried about wasting my time.

The best flavour Vietnamese we've been to
Submitted Sunday, November 13, 2011 - 12:47pm [Dine in]

The gf and I have been to quite a few Vietnamese places around Vancouver & Richmond. There is mixed quality throughout the city, but we always come back to Saigon Fare.

The Pho is the right flavour (the gf has spent a lot of time in Vietnam), the Bahn Mi are good (better than the deli on Kingsway), the vermicelli combos are tasty.

Great value for money in a relaxed, tidy, clean, atmosphere with friendly service.

It was good, but not #1
Submitted Tuesday, December 14, 2010 - 5:45pm [Dine in]

They do a pretty good job here, but it's not worth the #1 spot. I'm sorry to be blunt to the owners.... perhaps it was just the dishes we bought.... it doesn't seem genuine.

Let me explain further.... we ordered the Pad Thai. It was good from my point of view... it was quite a bit sweeter and tasted different than other Pad Thai's. I liked it.

But it was not genuine. My gf enjoys food that is genuine, and not too sweet. This was more like their version of the dishes. Nothing wrong with that - but in my humble opinion to be a #1, you should make a genuine version perfectly - not your own version, even though it is decent.

New owners are not Japanese
Submitted Tuesday, December 14, 2010 - 5:39pm [Dine in]

I used to love this place. Perfect genuine food that the staff really put a lot of effort into preparing.

But the owners have changed, and so have 90% of the staff. The main waitress lady definitely puts a lot of effort in, and the new sushi chef still seems decent, but really it's not the place it once was.

I would still go if you want some ok cheap Japanese, but it's no longer my #1 place for genuine Japanese. I haven't found a new one yet... although I do have an idea of where to try next....

I agree with the most-recent "average" reviews.
Submitted Sunday, March 14, 2010 - 2:12pm [Dine in]

I was fooled by the other reviews here. It's not that great. I took my gf here on Valentines Day and it was mostly empty. Another young couple came in, saw how empty it was, and left.

Food is distinctly average. Quite over the top as they attempt to be really flash and create a fine dining experience. But it's kind of ruined by the chinese chefs speaking really loudly in the kitchen and then coming out into the entrance way to empty the garbage. The house itself is really nice though.

Nothing really good to say about the food. They try but really they don't try hard enough in some areas and too much in others.... eg:

- Shrimp cocktail tastes like nothing - appears to be frozen shrimp from the supermarket.

- I got a salad but it tasted ok but came in a stupid twisty cone thing that didn't look impressive... the queen would probably laugh at it.

Great steak & seafood
Submitted Sunday, March 14, 2010 - 2:03pm [Dine in]

I love the keg. Whenever I get a craving for a steak I go here. Sometimes they don't quite get the level of cooking right - I like medium but sometimes end up with a medium-rare to medium-well. I can forgive them for that though because it always tastes great.

My gf loves their shrimp cocktail. Better than any other ship cocktail shes had - and she's had them all.

Value is not to good. Pretty expensive.

Real sushi... & the 'other stuff' is excellent
Submitted Sunday, March 14, 2010 - 2:00pm [Dine in]

I'm not a sushi fan, so I like that the 'other stuff' is so good. They do a great job of all of the dishes, and the various sea foods are done really well. Feels like you are in Japan - you get to see the sushi chef working away in the middle of the restaurant.

Service is good... bringing you drink top ups and a little sample of something extra that you didn't order. Decor is average. Value is better the average considering the quality of food you are getting (I normally spend ~ $30/person here).

Burgers Etc. BBQ House4091 Hastings St., Burnaby
One of my favourites.
Submitted Sunday, March 14, 2010 - 1:42pm [Dine in]

I've been here about a dozen times.

The soups in winter are fantastic - they always sell out by dinner so go for lunch.

Their meats and burgers are great. The pulled pork and beef brisket is amazing... unbeatable. BBQ chicken is good as well, but I don't really like their italian sausage that much. It's a bit dry for me. Good milkshakes!

Decor is fine, service is good. Value is probably better than average if you get one of the shared dishes.

Love it.

Top notch food
Submitted Sunday, March 14, 2010 - 1:37pm [Dine in]

I've been here about a dozen times.

The food is great. Nice fresh ingredients and really well done. Lettuce Wraps, soups, curries, seafood and main dishes are all really well done.

Decor isn't amazing - don't come here for the wall decorations. Service is solid and good without being amazing.

Value is great - not sure why others have ranked it so low. $10 lettuce wraps are delicious and enough for 2 or 3 to share for 1st course. All mains around $10 which is outstanding... even if you want to order 2 (I never have had to).

Go there.
