Food Safe?
Submitted Monday, February 7, 2011 - 11:25am [Take-out]

I use to frequent this place quite often as it's on campus but.... I have witnessed time and time again that they do NOT wash their hands after handling cash! They then use their bare hands to grab food items such as samosas and bagels!!! Gross. And it's not just the staff who do this.... The owner does the exact same thing!

Only Popular b/c They're on the North Shore
Submitted Sunday, June 13, 2010 - 1:10pm [Dine in]

This place is only popular b/c they're on the North Shore and there's not that much competition. Folks on the North Shore seem to need help refining their palates. Don't get me wrong, the food is decent here but it's nothing to call home about. I've dined all over the world and this place is decent.

I agree with the previous poster that the servers are only friendly when the owner is there. If Thomas isn't around, the staff all of a sudden develop an attitude. I asked for a glass of water THREE times before someone actually poured me a glass. And don't expect smiles from the lady making the coffee. I believe she may be Thomas's wife?

Whoever designed the store front needs to be shot. You have three lines going within half a foot of space. The line up to order, pay and fetch your coffee is ridiculous.

Great Food Time and Time Again
Submitted Saturday, January 9, 2010 - 1:32am [Dine in]

I've been to Joey's on numerous occasions and they never disappoint. I went with a party of 8 last night and we were quickly seated. A few of us ordered wine and a few bellinis. Their bellinis are one of the best in the lower mainland. Not overly sweet and so close to perfection.

I ordered the steak and prawns that came with vegetables and their famous crispy mash potatoes. I LOVE their crispy mash potatoes. The steak was done to perfection (medium rare) and the prawns and vegetables were excellent.

I didn't order an appetizer b/c I had to save room for the apple pie. I personally don't really like apple pie, but Joey's is so damn good! They make each individual pie when you order and it comes with either maple or vanilla ice cream. Because they're made fresh to order, it does take approx. 10 to 15 minutes for your pie to arrive... but it's worth the wait.

Our server was wonderful and overall a great night!

A BIG disappointment to say the least
Submitted Thursday, January 7, 2010 - 1:26am [Dine in]

I was really hoping that this restaurant would be a great one. I'm sorry to say that the food was a HUGE disappointment.

I ordered a martini to start and it was served in a glass that had two huge chips on the side. I decided not to make a fuss and just drank from the other side of the glass.

To start, we ordered the Lobster bisque and the Fishworks chilled platter ((Albacore Tuna Tataki, Oysters , Prawns, honey Mussels, Manilla clams, fresh Horseradish, Mignonette, House prepared cocktail sauce). The lobster bisque was alright but tasted more like Campbell's Tomato Soup. The only item on the Fishworks chilled platter that was decent were the raw oysters and prawns. The mussels and clams didn't taste very fresh and were a tad dry. The tuna tataki was presented in a way that I've never experienced. It was two blocks of tuna that didn't look like it had been seared at all. It was simply two huge blocks of raw tuna that had a very strange texture.

For the main course, I ordered the Linguine and Manilla Clams served in a white wine garlic sauce. My date ordered the fish and chips. Both main courses were flops. The linguine was tasteless and I suspect it had been heated up in the microwave as it came out a tad too piping hot. The fish and chips were probably the worst of all the items we ordered. The fish was over cooked and the fries looked like they had been pre-fried and then re-fried. Also, there was way too much salt on the fries (to the point where it tasted bitter).

Service was decent and it is a nice cozy restaurant... I guess that's the only positive aspect of this establishment.

My date and I both agreed that we will not be returning.

Really Good for North Shore Standards
Submitted Sunday, April 12, 2009 - 6:12pm [Dine in]

Good Chinese food is pretty much non-existent on the North Shore. My friend wanted dim sum and since she lives on the North Shore, she decided on this place. Honestly, I wasn't very keen about eating any Asian food on the North Shore, but decided to take a chance.

Must admit, I was pleasantly surprised. The dim sum is actually not bad.... it's not great but it's decent. The shrimp dumplings are HUGE!! A little too big, but they were fresh. Black bean spareribs were nice as was the sticky rice wraps. We also had the sui mai dumplings, beef balls, fried wonton and fried spring rolls. Everything was decent.

So if you're on the North Shore and desperate for some dim sum, give this place a try.!

Rude Service
Submitted Thursday, April 9, 2009 - 4:18pm [Dine in]

I've gotten take-out from this place a few times and the service has always been rude. Today was no an exception. They had accidently charged my order to the lady in front of me. They didn't even bother to address the first customers mix-up but instead, looked at me and said, "What you need?". I said I had ordered take out and believed that the order on the counter was mine. The cashier then took the order I was referring to and slammed it on the counter behind them!! She was also giving another staff member dirty looks and sighing really loud at the same time! She then asked me what I had ordered and I said it was the order behind her. She said loudly, "Yes, I know, but I have to confirm!!!". At this point I was ready to walk out but decided to stick it out. I told her what my order was and she then threw my order in front of me!

I will never return to this place again. The staff is the worst I have ever seen.

This was one of the worst restaurants I've eaten at in the last year. We ordered the Spicy Wontons and Chicken Salad to start. The spicy wontons were not spicy at all. Instead, they were sitting thin broth that tasted more like oyster sauce. The wontons were barely luke warm and just didn't taste right.

The Chicken salad tasted like vinegar. I took one bite and didn't touch that dish again.

We ordered the Mongolian Beef as well as the Spicy Prawns. Both dishes were barely room temperature. The Spicy prawns were not spicy at all but tasted like sweet soy sauce.

The entire meal was rather gross. I will never return.

Not worth it!
Submitted Saturday, March 17, 2007 - 12:13am [Dine in]

Decided to try this place out as I've heard it mentioned many times before. I was expecting something similar to what's offered at Tojo's....and boy, were we ever disappointed!!! The atmosphere was so-so. Didn't really feel like a japanese restaurant. The waitress (long curly brown hair) was rude and annoying. The genetlmen sitting at the table next to us was commenting to the waitress that his sake tasted a tad "flat". Well, the waitress responded by telling him, "well, the sake you ordered is the cheap sake!!".

Ahi Tuna was one of the worst I've ever had! It tasted like it had been previously seared and then taken out of the fridge and sliced up. Tried something called the West East Coast Roll (or something that sounded like that). Not impressed whatsoever. We had a few other dishes that were nothing great. We decided not to order any more food after the first few dishes as everything was no that great.

Def. not going to return to this place. Two thumbs down!
