Authentic Japanese Chef
Submitted Saturday, May 15, 2010 - 12:51pm [Dine in]

My husband only likes going to places with authentic japanese chef. Luckily he found this place thru a blog. We are now regulars. The tempura is always a nice light yellow color and not dark which is an indication of the freshness of oil. The batter is not like 60%+ thick like typical japanese places. They actually use a larger size prawn so it's not just eating a thick coat of batter. Although the rice consistency varies in stickiness it's a small issue I overlook for the overall quality and value. The beef teriyaki is cooked with sweet teriyaki sauce as I like it. The sashimi is always fresh and excellent. The downside is the service can be slow as they cook everything fresh if the place is bustling. I've always found the servers to be very courteous as japanese people often are. They do take out too.

Would go back again
Submitted Tuesday, May 11, 2010 - 10:32pm [Dine in]

This restaurant is one of the smallest restaurants I've been to. We ordered the pad thai and the red curry. The pad thai was a larger portion but very average. The red curry stood out with real tasting pineapples and basil on top. I would say the spice flavor to be way better than Thai house. Also I've had odd/off tasting pineapples at Tropika on Cambie that tasted worst than canned pineapples. That made me not want to go back to Tropika. The server was very cordial at Mali. We had parked at the back and walked thru the kitchen. The kitchen was clean and less greasy looking than a chinese restaurant's kitchen if you know what I mean. For $6 I would go back to try other dishes again.

DOV
Submitted Thursday, January 15, 2009 - 1:30am [Dine in]

Had the DOV. The beef caperberry appetizer is really interesting. The beef was very tender and nice to eat with the crisps and warm bread presented. This is a must try. I didn't find the duck to be crisp on the outside, it was more like moist all over. The chocolate dessert was excellent with raspberry coulis. Overall the service was exceptional. This restaurant seems to really care about how they present themselves. It was a pleasant dining experience.
