Giraffe Restaurant15053 Marine Drive, White Rock
A great spot for those special dinners
Submitted Monday, November 16, 2009 - 12:37pm [Dine in]

Just tried Giraffe for the first time recently, and were really glad we did. The ambience and setting are wonderful, - nice and cozy and relaxed, with no great distractions to take away from enjoying a quiet, romantic and delicious, well-thought out and prepared meal. Although the one server was incredibly busy the night we were there, her manner and honest, friendly, approach were ideally suited to keeping us smiling, happy and willing to deal with any delays. Excellent menu and wine selection. Looking forward to our next visit.

Well worth the visit
Submitted Monday, November 16, 2009 - 12:27pm [Dine in]

We recently moved to Surrey and have eaten at Sabatino's for lunch and dinner a few times over the last two months, both ourselves and with visitors. It has gained a top place on our "where shall we go for dinner" list as a place consistently offering a good menu with something for everyone. Some of our favourite dishes are the Mushroom Cappellettii, and the Porcini Mushroom Chicken
Scaloppine. and the Fanny Bay Oysters with chipotle, cream and sundried tomatoes are magnificent - sounds like a bit of an unusual combination, but trust us - it really works!

Looking forward to next time.

Soho Bar and Grill15355 24 Avenue, Surrey
Bad food and slow service. Closing Soon?
Submitted Monday, November 16, 2009 - 12:12pm [Dine in]

Our first clue that we should perhaps have chosen another lunch spot than the Soho Bar and Grill was the shoddy finishing of the furniture and décor – the back of one of our chairs was broken, and the trim moulding was detached and falling from the wall. Between that and the chipped paint and broken shutters, and no server greeting customers, the place had the appearance of a soon-to-be empty space and in urgent need of refurbishment. Although there were only four other customers, it took longer than necessary before the server finished her conversations (on the phone and then with two customers at the bar) and brought us menus and later returned to take our order. Some of the beers we chose (both draft and bottled) were not available as supplies had run out. Several minutes after our lunch order had gone in, the cook came out of the kitchen to get money from the server from the till – to go to the nearby Safeway for supplies? After another long spell, our order appeared (nachos and a butter chicken wrap with fries) and the waitress apologized for the long delay. The fries appeared (and tasted) like they had been refried more than twice, and in old and/or cold oil. They were overcooked, dark brown, greasy shells, with little evidence of any potato inside. The wrap was a dry, crumbling tortilla with a filling of chicken pieces, some sort of semi-moist dressing, and curry powder . A far cry from the advertised "butter chicken". A decidedly untasty dish with dry, bitter curry powder being the predominant flavour. The nachos seemed good at first, but then near the bottom, hiding under some cold melted cheese was a large blob of messy-looking sour cream. It really looked like the bottom section of the plate had been recycled from a previous diner’s leftovers, and put us off eating any more. When we told the server, she said she doubted they were recycled... as she hadn’t served any other nachos that day. Needless to say, we will not be returning, and were greatful not to be feeling ill the next day.

Vita Bella Ristorante4544 Hastings Street, Burnaby
Much, much better than our first visit
Submitted Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 11:22am [Dine in]

Further to our earlier review (June 15/06), we tried Vita Bella again two weeks ago. What a difference!

We were warmly welcomed by two excellent staff members and enjoyed a fabulous meal. The whole experience was outstanding.

We eat a lot of caesar salad, but the one at Vita Bella has to be the best around - absolutely fantastic - not too heavily dressed, with sweet asiago cheese and croutons with tapenade - delicious.

The smoked duck linguine is amazing. The duck is so tender, it almost melts in the mouth - I'd love to know how the chef smokes and cooks it (at home, ours tends to be a bit on the chewy side). The pasta is tossed with a light demi-glaze and cream (at least we think that's what it is) - rich and flavourful, but not too heavy.

The rest of the menu looks wonderful too, but I know we'll keep returning for these two dishes alone!

We were well served by knowledgeable, helpful, experienced and friendly staff members who made our visit very pleasant. We look forward to another visit soon.

Cristos Greek Taverna4624 Hastings Street, Burnaby
Good neighbourhood spot
Submitted Thursday, June 15, 2006 - 4:19pm [Dine in]

Like the previous reviewers, we too live in the neighbourhood and have been going to Cristo's for years. Food and service are definitely better than at the nearby Sfinaki Taverna. Two of our favourites is the prawns/scallops skewers, and the calamari - always hot, tasty, and good portions. The staff are super friendly and efficient, and the good, consistent food keeps us returning.
