I am all about due diligence, so I checked their website and called to make sure they were open. Both the website and their answering machine said that they were, so I made the trek to go see them.
They were closed, everything was covered inside and obviously they hadn't even opened. No sign on the door, and when I called their answering machine still said that they were open.
If you aren't already around there for some other reason, don't trust that they'll be open. It's not worth the waste of time.
So, I love seafood, and the Boathouse and the Keg weren't doing it for me. I wanted something special for my birthday dinner, so we tried out The Coast.
The interior is super modern and chic, but really comfortable. I loved the setup of the bar with the iced seafood displayed under it!
We decided to be odd and order a soup before diving into the chilled seafood platter for two. We both had the traditional clam chowder, and it was one of the best I have had. Good portion size, and incredibly flavourful. The chilled platter was a neat experience, it came out in a bowl of ice, with dry ice underneath it so it was misty- such a fun presentation! This was also the perfect amount of food, we were both very full after eating, and we both had a bit of everything that was sampled on the platter.
Service was great and friendly, and I will definitely be back again for another special meal!
My friend, her mother and I went to try this place out last night after I discovered it on dinehere.ca.
We loved every minute!
They ordered a domestic beer, but I took a chance on the traditional drink with honey and hops. It was refreshing, not too sweet. Very nice, especially with the bit of spice in the dishes we ordered.
The owner came over and was incredibly helpful, showing us which dishes he suggested that we share, and then how to eat with the really yummy soft buckwheat crepes served with the communal dishes. The lamb was really nicely done, and both it and the chicken was well spiced (they give you an option when you order of how spicy to make the dishes). The vegetable combo plate was our favorite- we couldn't decide which of the dishes was our favorite, we enjoyed them all so much!
In terms of ambiance, it's not bad at all for a small family-run restaurant. Everything (even the bathroom) is super clean, the paintings on the walls were ethnic without being kitschy, and the music they played in the background was the perfect level.
I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone to try.
I was so dissapointed! I decided to do takeout (though the inner part of the restaurant was gorgeous and tempted me), and this place is right near the knitting shop I was taking lessons at.
The menu sounded great, but the tiny portion size and the price nearly made me take the bus all the way back to ask for a refund. Absolutely ridiculous. The amount of rice in the wraps as opposed to the meat was astounding, and I asked for double the salad instead of soup, and was given a small crumpled paper wrapper with a tiny amount of spinach inside.
I do not suggest this restaurant at all.
Having been in Thailand, both as a traveller and having worked in a rural village, my disdain for most Thai food served here is high. This restaurant offers and exception!
I ordered the Massamun curry (SO exciting, my favorite curry and the hardest to find), and my friend ordered the green curry with chicken. They were both excellent! Good portion size too. We had Singha beer with our meal, then finished off with coconut rice with mango- where it's slightly salty with the sweet. That's the way it is supposed to be made!
I liked the ambiance, it was not too kitschy, and the paintings of the lilawadee flowers looked great. The waitress was Thai and we had a great chat about where we need to go next time we are in Asia.
I'll be returning here again soon!
I will definetly go here again.
Their lettuce wraps and Pad Thai were fantastic, and I tried the Thai Iced Tea, which is addictive!
Nice atmosphere, easy to get to and find, good service. Highly recommended.
I did the dine out menu with a friend, and while we enjoyed the food, it wasn't as special as we were expecting.
The ambiance was ok, nothing exciting or really interesting. Service was not bad, but we felt rushed even though there were lots of tables available.
The fried wontons were yummy, loved the sauce. The green curry was a bit of a letdown for me, only because I could make it for a better price with more meat. The fried banana was totally dissapointing- it tasted like beer batter! I expected something sweet for a dessert and was dissapointed considering how much I was looking forward to trying it.
I probably won't return.
I enjoyed my dinner there last night!
The pulled pork really is very good, not dry at all (something I was worried about). The fries were really well spiced, and I liked the kick that the coleslaw had. I enjoyed a Boylan cane sugar soda as well with the meal. I took about half of it home though, it was a large amount of food.
The staff were really kind, and the guy taking money was really funny. I enjoyed being there, and I will definetly go back.
I have been here many times for get-togethers (that I obviously don't plan), and I am never really impressed.
The salad is mostly iceberg, which I loathe. Surely some romaine or even spinach can't be THAT expensive! The breadsticks are fantastic, but I am not a fan of the soup selections (usually a cream soup, a minestroni, and a chili).
The entrees I find overpriced, and I have had several overcooked meals, especially when ordering chicken.
The wines are really good, and the wait staff are knowledgable. They are also pretty calm usually, surprising considering how busy they always are!
I would never choose to return, I don't know why everyone is obsessed with this place.
I always find that no matter how many people and children pack into this place, it feels nice and quiet and comfortable. The interior decorating is really well done!
I love the fact I can mix and match anything I want to eat, including the sauces. Their selection is really impressive! It's fun to see your food being made, and I have to say that generally my friends and I ignore the wraps and rice offered and fill up on the stir fry instead. It is nice that soup is included with the meal.
It's a bit more expensive than we'd normally choose (being university students), but we go back time and time again for special celebrations. I highly recommend it!
I really love this restaurant. The food is reasonably priced, and it is really what I want when I crave greek food.
The ambiance is really nice, and I enjoyed the last time I was there because a bellydancer came up to my group and we all tried dancing with her! That doesn't happen all the time, but I suggest going on a night when there is a woman there for a bit of fun.
I have never had a bad meal there, I especially love their flavoured potatoes and rice!
I have been back several times already, and every time I have found that they have fantastic friendly service, the sweet treats are wonderful, and the tea is the best in Vancouver. My friends and I love to head there to unwind on a friday night (we aren't into the clubbing scene).
Definetly try the Coconut Chai tea!
As much as the patio is lovely, the food here wasn't really worth the price tag. It's pretty standard fare for a diner, but at twice the amount that I think is reasonable.
There are better places along the boardwalk to go.
My boyfriend loves this place, and I have to say the service and ambiance were excellent.
I had yam soup, which was fantastic, and the lentil meatless loaf which was a bit dry for my liking. The taste was really nice though.
I will probably return to try another dish. A nice place to relax and not worry about not being well dressed enough, like so many downtown sit-down restaurants.
This is now my favorite place downtown to grab a drink and food with friends.
The ambiance is fantastic, with really comfortable chic seating, and a very trendy eclectic interior. It isn't ever crazy busy, which I appreciate.
I love all the tapas, my friends and I have worked our way through the whole menu now. The portions are good- we each order one tapas and share within a group of two to six, and everyone leaves full. The wine menu is fun and reasonably priced, and you MUST try the "Don't Feed the Ducks" cocktail!
