Good Guu, not the best Guu
Submitted Sunday, March 28, 2010 - 9:26pm [Dine in]

I've only been in 2 other Guu's and only ate at 1 other. I walked into the Gastown one but it was way too busy and we were too hungry to wait. Guu Garden definitely isn't as loud as Gastown and the Thurlow ones. Guu's known for the shouting, but if you're the type that can't handle it when they shout in your ear, this one is perfect. Most of the shouting is just when they greet.
I had Oden, a tuna sushi cone and kimchi udon. All three were great. The service was fast, except they took away my Oden soup when I was still drinking it. They tried taking it away once before but I told them I was still working on the soup. That sort of annoyed me. I was aware of their 2 hour limit, which is normal for places like Guu and Happa, so I knew why they were trying to be brisk... but I think there's a better way of going around that than taking away people's food. I loved their 1L beer. The staff was really friendly. I agree that their menu isn't as big and diverse as the other Guu's but I don't see it as a fault. It's just a different type of Guu.

When it first opened I was absolutely satisfied with their late night.
They were the only place that had unlimited sashimi included in the price! But now they've set a limit to it. I still love it because their rolls come in just the right numbers and they're not packed with rice. Their full AYCE menu is great too because their selection of sashimi is much bigger than most places. Like their rolls their other orders come in good quantities and sizes too. They're small and that allows you to order a wider variety and you're never afraid to waste anything. I've never done the hot pot... but every time I go there are at least 3 other tables doing the whole hot pot-AYCE thing, so it must be good.

I just thought of going there right now.
It's like an answer to Memphis Blues if you love the food but sometimes you feel a bit guilty for self inducing a heart attack. It has the pulled pork, ribs, sausages but it also gives you a wider selection of options for the sides and not just beans and coleslaw (Migz has coleslaw, rice, fries, yam fries and a few more). It does get rowdy because it welcomes a lot of sports teams but it definitely only adds to the ambiance.
