Firstly, and perhaps not that important but, for anyone picky on the topic it is not run by Japanese (which is actually fairly common in the lower mainland).
Moving on... My boyfriend brought me here last week after mentioning he'd gone here numerous times and enjoyed it. He'd brought other friends here but the real test was me as I am a tad hard to please when it comes to Japanese food. Needless to say, actually felt bad for him, because I could tell he was embarrassed at how badly this place failed any expectations:
We ordered a gyoza to start. Not only could I tell the preparation was wrong but one bite in and we both knew it was undercooked - the skin was still powdery and dry on the inside, and the sauce was bland as well.
Then our sushi arrived. My boyfriend ordered a salmon roll and salmon nigiri and I could tell by looking at the colour of the fish the quality was sub-par. Even if it was atlantic farmed (which I'm assuming it was) the colour still looked really pale and off.
As for me, the proportion of fish to rice on my nigiri was bizarre - I have had over sized slabs of fish before, but the miniscule balls of rice which accompanied the fish just felt odd. I have never experienced that before, and I didn't like it.
What else I didn't like was the dynamite roll I had ordered. The presentation was pathetic (I actually took a photo!), crab spilling everywhere, sea-weed not rolled properly, un-proportionate slices all jammed up on one side of the plate.
Above all, the rice had the mashed potato effect... Literally there were some areas on my roll so smashed in together you could see blobs and finger indents. GROSS.
SUFFICE TO SAY... I will NOT be returning.
